my favorite movies - Zábava
I don't even watch movies but sometimes you just want to watch someone who's knowledgeable and enthusiastic for 15 minutes.
1931 The Public Enemy, 1933 The Story of Temple Drake (amazing, incredibly slept-on movie), and 1936 The Petrified Forest are all faves. Plus the Busby Berkley musicals- epecially Footlight Parade with Jimmy Cagney, and Golddiggers of 33.
So many classic 30s movies- Top Hat, Queen Christina, Adventures of robin Hood, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Swing Time.
I only really started seriously watching 30s movies (beyond well-known stuff like Marx bros or Wizard of Oz) in covid shutdown, but it became one of my favourite eras.
70s and 30s, the book-ends of the Hays Code, are the two best eras in movies
Picking a favorite from each year is so much harder than a top ten of the decade! But here are mine:
1930 N/A. All Quiet on the Western Front and Anna Christie are the only ones I've seen, and I can't say either was a favorite.
1931 M (runners up: The Public Enemy, Frankenstein)
1932 I am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (runner up: Trouble in Paradise)
1933 The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (ru: Duck Soup)
1934 It Happened One Night
1935 Ruggles of Red Gap (ru: Top Hat, Mutiny on the Bounty)
1936 Dodsworth (ru: My Man Godfrey, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Modern Times, Swing Time, Libeled Lady)
1937 Stage Door (ru: The Awful Truth)
1938 Bringing Up Baby (ru: The Adventures of Robin Hood)
1939 Ninotchka (ru: Stagecoach)
Ruggles Of Red Gap, definitely ! Two totally opposite roles for Laughton that year, I love the Bounty too, if course ; but between a drama and a comedy, I shall choose the comedy !
Have you been able to spot Cagney and Niven among the extras ? I never could, it’s very frustrating…
A great countdown! I am enjoying the heck out of this series. My year-by-year favorites:
1930: All Quiet on the Western Front
1931: Frankenstein
1932: Freaks
1933: I'm No Angel
1934: It's a Gift / The Thin Man (tie)
1935: David Copperfield
1936: Camille
1937: Stage Door
1938: The Lady Vanishes

This list was pretty easy to make:

1934: It Happened One Night
1935: The Bride Of Frankenstein

1939: Ninotchka
Terrific choices! Love that you chose Ninotchka.
1930: The Divorcee
1931: Frankenstein (Maybe my favorite film of all time.)
1932: Tarzan
1933: King Kong

1938: Robin Hood
1939: Wuthering Heights (Laurence Olivier's Hollywood debut, and my dark horse Year of Film fav)

My favorite film from this decade is Stagecoach; I'm simply obsessed with it. I think it's the best American western film. Glad to see you picked it too! It's just so damn good. That climax is unbearable.
Nice!! 1939 is such a stacked year I wondered if I’d catch heat for that choice. haha Glad to hear you back me up.
@@cobwebschannel please excuse the typo in my original comment! I meant unbeatable!
Stagecoach is a masterpiece. IMO his The Searchers is the all time best western.

1939: The Wizard of Oz/Stagecoach/Mr. Smith Goes To Washington/Five Came Back (my underrated pick)
Great video, pal! Love these choices too. I've got a few of these that I still have yet to see on my shelf, so it's time to start watchin!
Thanks dude!!
Such a cool idea for a series of videos! Some great choices which I totally relate to specially for The Prisoner of Zenda, Robin Hood and Stagecoach. Truly favorites of mine too. Particularly Zenda, if it was made today I think Douglas Fairbanks Jr. could have easily have his own series of films as Rupert. He is so good, that character fit him like a glove and it was his father who convinced him to do it. Fab video!
Thank you Miriam! I also enjoyed your video on Zenda!
I love how Fairbanks Jr. wanted the lead but his father told him what a great villain his character was. And he was absolutely right!
@@cobwebschannel Thank you! Also, you reminded me that some classic horror films are a pending subject for me. Must get to them!
@@MiriamVintageClassics Classic Horror is my jam! That's my first love with classic film and, really, movies in general. Hope you enjoy!
Very interesting list. I'm currently on a mission to watch all the Best Picture nominees in chronological order and now I'm in the early 30s, many of your favorites are on the list, looking forward to Robin Hood.
PS: I'm surprised you didn't even mention All quiet on the western front
I’ve never seen All Quiet. I’m not a big war movie guy. Thanks for watching!
I own the complete Thin Man series in the original boxset. I adore these films and love Myrna loy and William Powell. My favorites for each year are as follows:
1930- Monte Carlo
1931- Possessed
1932- Broken Lullaby
1933- Dinner at Eight
1934- The Thin Man
1935- Les Miserables
1936- My Man Godfrey
1937- The Awful Truth
1938- You Can Take It With You
1939-- so many favorites but my absolute favorite is Dark Victory and of course Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and The Women are among my favorites, too.
Awesome list, thanks for sharing!!
I’m loving this new series from you, Daniel! Certainly not an easy thing to do as there are usually 2-3 really great films each year to choose from. Here are my personal top 10:

2) Frankenstein (1931)
3) Horse Feathers (1932)

Keep up the fun & entertaining content for us film fans!
Thank you Joe! And I absolutely love these choices. And you chose my favorite Marx Brothers film, Horse Feathers!
Fairly new viewer here. And I never leave CZcams comments....buuuuut...you asked for them so here we go, my fave films form each 1930s year (at this time):
1930 - It has to 'Animal Crackers' by default. I don't think I've seen any other 1930 films.
1931 - Frankenstein
1932 - Freaks
1933 - King Kong (possibly my fave movie of the whole of the 1930s)
1934 - The Thin Man
1935 - Bride of Frankenstein
1936 - My Man, Godfrey (or Modern Times)
1937 - Oh, Mr Porter! (although Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has to come real close second)
1938 - The Adventures of Robin Hood (many have tried to better it, none have succeeded)
1939 - The Wizard of Oz (fairly obvious pic to pick, I know, and it does have a fair bit of competition, but c'mon...it's The Wizard of Oz!)
There ya go. Really enjoying the channel, I don't watch/listen to a lot of CZcams vids, but I'm working my way through your vids at quite the expeditious rate. Please keep up the fine work.
Great channel Daniel!! I'm a huge movie fan,my channel has a emphasis on older movies and genres!!
I subbed to your channel! will dive thru your older episodes!!
take care!
Hey, thank you so much!!
Great list, especially The Mummy at #1 in '32, although it's my 2nd favorite of that year (Freaks takes the #1 spot for me) it's just nice to see that movie get some much-deserved love, it gets a bad rap for reasons you mentioned, and I've always disagreed.
Ah, Freaks is terrific too! I should've mentioned it as an honorable mention, but I'm glad you did. Fascinating film.
1930 - The Blue Angel
1931 - City Lights
1932 - Grand Hotel
1933 - Duck Soup
1934 - The Thin Man
1935 - A Night at the Opera
1936 - Modern Times
1937 - Grand Illusion
1938 - Bringing Up Baby
1939 - The Wizard of Oz
Love these choices! Lots of great classic comedies.
very good list! you know your classic hollywood films!!
Thank you!!
Dude I love your videos! It's so cool seeing another young guy rooting for classic movies! Keep them coming!
Hey, thank you so much!
@@cobwebschannel You're welcome! I enjoy them all!
My favourite each year are:
30 Below Zero
31 Murder at Midnight
32 The Music Box (my favourite of the decade)
33 Sons of the Desert
34 The Ninth Guest
35 The 39 Steps
36 Secret Agent
37 Young and Innocent
38 The Lady Vanishes
39 Ask a Policeman
RONALD Colman. LOVE your videos!
I dare you to do my favorite decade--the twenties.
I wonder if you've seen OLD DARK HOUSE of 1932 directed by James Whale with a brilliant cast including Boris Karlof. It's a top pick for me in any genre but it lays firmly in horror/thriller genre. Without a doubt has some of the greatest atmosphere and gorgeous visually.
Yep! I talked about it in my top horror movies of the 30s video.
in looking at lists of movies from the '30s one thing immediately becomes clear: wow, there are a lot of good '30s movies I haven't yet seen! I need to catch up.
Anyway, here are some of my favorites from those I have seen
1930 Anna Christie
1931 Street Scene
1932 The Animal Kingdom
1933 Dinner at Eight
1934 The Scarlet Pimpernel
1935 Top Hat
1936 Showboat/Swingtime (tie)
1937 La Grande Illusion
1938 Pygmalion
1939 Gone with the Wind
didn't realize I liked Leslie Howard so much until I put this list together, but I guess I do 😆
Awesome list, and several movies I haven’t seen! But I do love Pygmalion, that’s an excellent choice.
Pygmalion is wonderful and Wendy Hiller is simply extraordinary.
Hey Daniel! I have just recently discovered your channel and I love it! Easily my most favorite channel! I love all your insights and that we both share a love for these amazing movies!
Hey, thank you so much!
@@cobwebschannel Just curious. Have you seen Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
I actually haven’t! I need to.
@@cobwebschannel Yes, you do! I highly recommend i. One of my favorites. Let me know what you think if you end up watching it!
All Quiet on the Western Front, Frankenstein, Island of Lost Souls, King Kong, It Happened One Night, Bride of Frankenstein, Dodsworth, The Awful Truth, Angels With Dirty Faces, Goodbye Mr. Chips. Man, this was hard!
Great list, I love Island of Lost Souls!
RONALD Colman
Subbed. This is my kind of channel.
I shall certainly surprise you, I haven’t seen any Thin Man yet but the actor who will lead me to watch them is neither Powell nor Loy (though I like them both), it is an actor in a supporting role : Asta. He was so funny in The Awful Truth and in Bringing Up Baby !
I love Ronald (not Robert) Colman, I like his Prisoner Of Zelda, but I prefer the second version because of the chemistry between Stuart Granger and Deborah Kerr, and James Mason is one of my favourite actors…
Concerning Colman, have you seen my two favourite films : Capra’s Lost Horizons and Mervin LeRoy’s Random Harvest ? Marvellous movies !
And I like The Talk Of the Town too.
Great channel and great list
Thank you!
Ronald Coleman.
I need to work on my films from the 30s because I sadly haven’t seen too many.
1930: I can’t name any
1931: Dracula
1932: the most dangerous game (kinda by default)
1933: the invisible man(my personal favorite of the universal monster films) honorable mention to King Kong.
1934: I can’t name any I’ve seen
1935: bride of Frankenstein
1936: I can’t name any
1937: Snow White and the seven dwarfs
1938: the adventures of Robin Hood
1939: Of Mice and Men
big honorable mentions to Gone with the wind and of course the wizard of Oz(was just a hair from making it)
Although a big Honorable Mention is the 1926 animated film the tales of Prince achmad which is the oldest surviving animated film. Unfortunately the original version of this was lost but has since been pieces together with restorations with what could be found.
Love your list, terrific choices and so much diversity. One small thing, Ronald Coleman, not Robert.
haha Yeah, an unfortunate slip of the tongue.
@@cobwebschannel, it totally happens. Wish I could say I’ve never done it, but …
OK back to the 30's. Must admit to not seeing a whole lot from this decade but I'll list my favs. 30---Morocco, The Blue Angel, The Dawn Patrol, Our Daily Bread, 31--Tabu, City Lights, Dishonored, Dracula, Frankenstein 32--Scarface, The Shanghai Express, Blonde Venus, I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang, The Mummy ,The Invisible Man, Freaks, Tarzan, 33--Duck Soup, King Kong (guess I've not seen many from this year) 34--The Scarlet Empress, Imitation of Life, The Merry Widow, The Black Cat, 35--The Devil is a Woman, The 39 Steps, 36--Secret Agent, Modern Times, My Man Godfrey, Fury, 37--You Only Live Once, Sabotage, History is Made at Night, 38--Bringing Up Baby, Pygmalion, 39--Stagecoach, Love Affair, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Only Angels Have Wings, (Really I need to see more films from this era. As it is, it is my least favorite decade. Much prefer the 20's, 40's 50's and 60's
You have seen more than most! Great list.
@@georgestreng Thank you! More than most kids under 30 who avoid old B&W films like the plague. That's for sure....lol. But I'm old school and a filmmaker myself so i LOVE old films.
It's not one of my favorites, but I'd say I prefer it to the 1920s (You mean, 1920s, right?), 2000s, and 2010s. Maybe 80s and 90s but those decades have more masterpieces. On the other hand, those decades also have way more garbage, at least from what I've seen. The 2000s is easily my least favorite. There's like more garbage than masterpieces I've seen.
To each to our own.
Wille, I believe Our Daily Bread was released in 1934 , not 1930.
@@randyacuna5643 Yes you are right. My bad. Thanks for pointing this out. You must know your films to have such an eagle eye.
Not trying to be picky, but it's Ronald Coleman, not Robert Coleman.
It was a slip of the tongue, sorry about the mistake.
I like the Marx Br. very much but why didn't you go with Fritz Langs, M' in 1930?
I believe M is 1931. I’m also not a huge fan of M, even though I recognize it’s very influential.
@@cobwebschannel
Ok, so we have a different view here 🙂 For me, M is great like nearly every F.Lang movie
By the way: ,Das Testament des Dr.Mabuse' from 1933 is even better
RONALD not Robert Coleman
Ronald Coleman, not Robert Coleman. For a young person you are very good, but how can you forget Ronald Coleman.
Ah, slip of the tongue! I didn’t even realize I said that. haha
I've always thought this decade was a little overrated no offense to cinema lovers. I just feel film wasn't fully developed yet since it was the first full decade of talkies. Plus, none of my favorites are in my top 10 all time. That being said, I do it ranked ahead of the 2000s and 2010s. Maybe 80s and 90s, but they could easily top 30s for me. Anyway...
1930- All Quiet on the Western Front
1931- City Lights (M is VERY close.)
1932- Freaks
1933- King Kong
1934- L'Atalante
1935- The 39 Steps
1936- Modern Times
1937- La Grande Illusion
1938- The Lady Vanishes
1939- The Rules of the Game
As a bonus, here's the 1920s:
1920- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
1921- The Kid
1922- Nosferatu
1923- Our Hospitality
1924- The Last Laugh
1925- Battleship Potemkin
1926- The General
1927- Sunrise
1928- The Passion of Joan of Arc
1929- Pandora's Box
Awesome, thanks for sharing your lists, especially from the ‘20s!
Who is robert colman?
