The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost, June 23, 2024 at 11 a.m., at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Reverend Deanna J. Musical Notes: The Prelude is the central, slow movement of the third of Bach’s collection of six Sonatas for the organ. These pieces, apparently conceived for the instruction of Bach’s children and other pupils, convey the texture of the instrumental trio-sonata (typically two treble instruments with bass) to the hands and feet of a single player. The Postlude is the fourth and final movement of an unusual work by Bach, whose title, Pastorella, evokes the Nativity scene in Luke’s Gospel, with its flocks and shepherds. Its form, six-eight meter, and general affect put it in the category of the Gigue, a traditional final movement of the Baroque dance-suite.
