    Honestly I've been working away through Andrew Loomis's books trying to reacquire lost portrait skills. Right now I can't draw a portrait for toffee. I can produce a fairly decent sketch of any animal so long as I have a reference. Portraits are just damned elusive!

  • @jojo-sf9lt
    @jojo-sf9lt Před 6 lety +19

    Very impressive! I love this sort of rendering, with no millimeter accuracy and yet complety faithful to the original ! It gives a very expressive and contemporary look to the portrait, that's exactly how I would like to draw ! Still stuck with the grid pattern for the moment... picking techniques here and there to help me move away from it... May I ask you how much practice you needed to reach this result? And do you work from a picture the same size as your drawing or not necessarily? I mean I find it extremely hard to work from a small picture and keep the exact proportions when drawing a larger format. That's always a big challenge for me even with a grid pattern while you don't seem to be disturbed by this ! °.°

    • @zinlimart
      @zinlimart  Před 5 lety +6

      What I believe is that practicing everyday is the best way to upgrade, no matter how long total hours spent.
      Life size is the best but hard to have have it from photo and live model due to the distance.

    From what initially appears to be approaching chaos, to a good likeness within 10 minutes. Then on upward to the beauty of the subject, expressed in a very ''painterly'' manor. All this despite the fact her lips are parted in the photo....a truly brilliant performance!

      Use willow, remove the bark and avoid knots. Take branches at least two years old. Pieces about as thick as your thumb (they shrink during charring). Put in a tin can with a lid that fits tightly, but be sure to punch a hole in the lid. Put tin can in fire, gasses will escape through the hole, and catch fire. That stops after about half an hour. Removd from fire and IMPORTANT don't open before well cooled off. It is easy, and I compared it with store bought willow/vine charcoal, and don't notice any difference.
