This is a real teacher. She is so relaxed and easy to listen to. I am not Indian but I started reading the Upanishads many decades ago. I was raised Christian but left the church. When I found the ancient foundations of Hinduism it was like a light switch was turned on. Strangely, it all seemed familiar, even though I had never been to India. I vowed to go. But my karma/dharma prevented me, that was 50 years ago...I still want to go but maybe this is as close as I will get. Namaste...

If this were so, you'd be enlightened, dear one.
      Perhaps you are.
Yet most who say this, only know the lingo, the words.
If experience through meditation and increasing of deep understanding via reflection do not equal your superficial knowledge, your knowledge is like studying the word "medicine" and expecting it to heal you.
Take care not to think you know what Advaita Vedanta (and all other scriptures) points to, just because youve memorized the words on the signs.
      Just a friendly admonishing.

Surely "you" realize that NO ego can let go of itself?
      The ego is illusory.
How can an illusion dispel itself or let go of itself?
      It cannot.
      Work is required, effort, yes.
But when it comes down to it, ego is "let go of/dispelled" through the Grace of that which IS.
Not through any decision of the ego to let go of itself.
Just teasing, just poking a bit of humorous fun.
      But yes.
May as well say, "never feel sad, poor sad ego".
      It CANNOT.
It would never ever feel sadness if it had the choice.

    @rg2505 Před 4 lety +5

Wonderfully explained the vedic Advaitya philosophy : others are manifestation of "I" in another form and I is consciousness which pervade through the cosmos. My sincere thanks for the lucid enlightening thoughts.
But out of curiosity, I am puzzled with this:
Clay will remain Clay unless a designer and maker make a pot of chosen shape and appearance using tools (casts, potter's wheel, oven etc.) and inputs like fire, water et al.
Similarly, there will be no wave in ocean unless there is breeze, pressure and temperature change, gravitational forces etc., and of coure acause for all of those ingredients to make a wave.
A satellite on the cursory level will be in essence be made of metals, plastics and such other material. But those materials did not automatically get converted into constituent parts and assembled into satellite of particular shape, appearance and functions; instead, lots of brain went into making of that satellite and work of manufacturing, testing etc.
So now the question is how consciousness get converted into a particular form, shape, apearance and function and who conceived and then delivered different living entities....
with the analogy, nothing fundamentally basic core thing (like consciousness or clay for that matter) could get converted into a particular form and function.
The role of designer(s)/ creator(s) has to be there. Yes we realise that all forms are fundamentally of basic core (consciousness, clay et al.)
Can your insightful thoughts enlighten us on how core contituent get converted into a particular form and function and who does that...

    • @jshdhdyjfjdjfhfyyene731
      @jshdhdyjfjdjfhfyyene731 Před 2 lety

Look deep into the fabric of a pot. All that would be found is clay.
Look deep into the fabric of a spanner tool. All that would be found is metal
Look deep into the fabric of the universe/existence. All that would be found is Brahman/Self alone.
The above 3 examples are a non-linear "progression" (yet no progression) to that same essential reality.
In this context material nature (be it objects of clay pots, metal tools, mix of materials to respective other tools listed) and witnessing creator/designer/maker are non different due to ultimately being made from that one same reality, Brahman.
Advaita Vedanta takes on the statement that one is all and simultaneously all is one, therefore a person (you or me or someone else) is the entirety and non-different to that one same reality, Brahman.
Consciousness has no attributes, it is an attribute to Self. Consciousness relies not on material nature namely: objects living/non living, body, senses organs, senses, mind/heart (emotions, knowledge, life, death, etc) - basically everything that can be experienced.
      Example of 24 hours:
While awake one is conscious of material nature (as listed above) such as the physical body with its physical sense organs, mind and so on.
While dreaming one is only conscious of mind.
While in deep sleep one is conscious but there is nothing to be conscious of.
In each state Self has not ceased to be and therefore consciousness alone remains.
Consciousness 'sees' or witnesses without impression the life (appearance) and death (disappearance) of everything that can be experienced in material nature listed above therefore seeing one's body/mind passing from birth, life, old age disease, death, another possible birth, it's life, it's old age, it's disease, it's death and so on. These are all non different to the 24 hour example above. Consciousness itself never changes.
Consciousness therefore cannot get converted (did you mean that mental thoughts that reside in the mind get converted - of which do not and cannot affect consciousness) it simply is because Self is because Brahman is however there is no hierarchical structure because as mentioned one is all and simultaneously all is one.
Consciousness was always there just we didn't remove our ignorances in order to uncover consciousness. Consciousness alone is "consciousness's" constituent parts.
The nature of consciousness does not follow the same constructs, patterns, methodologies, concepts, concepts of a designer/maker/creator, etc of material nature because consciousness has no nature. These are all experiences or gathered knowledge that reside in the mind and mind is not consciousness. As previously mentioned, consciousness has no attributes. It was never created and it will never cease to exist unlike everything experienced in material nature (see material nature's definition above).
Consciousness has no core contituent, no process of being 'converted into a particular form and function' and there is no one who does that. Thus only Consciousness/Self/Brahman is.
Until one lives a life that Practices seeing this through 'un-learning' preconceived constructs, patterns, methodologies, concepts, concepts of designer/maker/creator, etc of material nature, can one come to this realisation.
      It is said:
"Humility; pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; simplicity; approaching a genuine and authorised spiritual master; cleanliness; steadiness; self-control; renunciation of the objects of sense gratification; absence of false ego; the perception of the evil of birth, death, old age and disease; detachment; freedom from entanglement with partner (husband/wife, boy/girlfriend), children, home, people and possessions; even-mindedness amid pleasant and unpleasant events; constant and unalloyed compassionate devotion to a personified symbol of self-realisation, truth, Self and Brahman; aspiring to live in a solitary place; detachment from the general mass of people; accepting the importance of self-realisation; and philosophical search for the Absolute Truth - all these are declared to be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance."
These cannot be forced, they come with practice. Such foundations of practice include and not limited to:
-Disciplining oneself to working without fruitive results from all outcome inner and outer. This practice is called Karma.
-Meditation to knowing Self as 'defined' above/ to come to Self-realisation knowing Self is not any/all experiences of material nature. This practice is called Dhyana.
      - Philosophical search for Ultimate Truth through Dhyana and Karma. This practice is called Jnana.
-Cultivating a compassionate character to unalloyed and loving devotion to a personified symbol of this self-realisation, to Truth, Consciousness, Self and Brahman. This will unfold further Wisdom, Truth, Jnana, Love, Bliss never otherwise possible. This practice is called Bhakti.
All are successfully proven methods, choose and practice many of the above practices and everything described in this comment will have so much clarity that it will be as if you have written it yourself.
Will end this reply with these poems:
"You neither do nor enjoy. You are free. You are the solitary witness of all forever free.
Your only bondage is not seeing this."
"Blessed indeed is He who knows Self. And to which the inexpressible is apparent!"
May Peace and Devine Tears of Bliss be the essence of You.
      :-)

Very interesting talk and superbly explained.. thank you!
A small observation.. About the question about whether there exists "potness" apart from clay, Analytic Philosophy argues pretty much the opposite. Every notion (in this case, the idea of a pot or "potness") is "simpliciter"-- in that it does exist. Except that it cannot express itself without a physical mould-- in this case, clay. Hence, we can have the idea of "potness" manifested not just in clay, but also in metal and plastic. What this means is that we can think of potness without the need for clay. This argument is used for the question of thought and language-- whether thought exists independent of language. The mould hypothesis says that thought does exist without a language (hence, sometimes, we "don't have the right words to express what we are thinking"), but thought needs language to express itself in the physical universe.
