How many NFL QB's are really BETTER than the SEAHAWKS Geno Smith?!

  • The Geno Smith debate has raged for two years now, and will continue on.... at least until we see how he fits and performs in Ryan Grubb's newly-installed Seahawks offense.
Statistics are plentiful, and no matter where you stand on Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno's skill-level and value you can find numbers to support you argument. Which leads me to this question - where does Smith fit in the echelon on current NFL QB's?
In this episode I try to quantify that not by number, but by attempting to determine a trade value.
In essence - which other NFL QB's would you deal Smith for straight up if you had the chance?
Play along with me, and let me know what YOU would do!

I think the misunderstood part is Why Geno not the long term solution and team is only treading water with him, that bothers some fans and they want JS to get a QB in draft. The only problem I have with Geno is his leadership getting the guys around him to believe in him , that's something a backup QB has to learn by playing, the thing I love about Sam is he will go above and beyond to get the guys around him to believe in him, he just needs to learn how to be a pro and play smart , he has all the tools and so does Geno ! Go Hawks 🦅🦖💚

If we get some solid line play, on both sides, it takes a lot of pressure off of Geno. Just a fraction more time and not playing catch up can make a big difference. What I saw with Penix in Grubbs offense is his receivers had to make plays and win them. They weren't always perfectly placed bombs but they were placed where the receivers had some work to do if they wanted that catch and I don't recall seeing a team where so many receivers made spectacular catch after spectacular catch. Their draft positions tell the story. That said, the level of coverage is a lot better in the NFL. It's going to be fun seeing if Geno trusts his receivers because he hasn't really shown that and I've seen him take the safer play time and again. That's not the Ryan Grub offense. There's a lot of trust in the passing game and timed throws. If they can gel it could be a fun offense to watch especially with the RB's keeping the D honest. It all relies on that line play though.

I only people I hear questioning Geno are in the media. Calling him polarizing. And how the fans doubt him. I guess they think the bots on X are speaking for all of us. I have yet to see any actual real data to back up these views. QBs are affected by many things like poor defense that forces predicable play calling and bad run blocking that does the same. I guess in depth research is harder than just saying Geno was bad in the second half of last year and then talking about the Chiefs for 20 minutes. No one talks about QB performance in relationship to OL and defensive performance.

Gotta chime in here. So I would trade Geno for Mahomes, Stroud and maybe Jake Browning but no one else. I always follow the stats on QBs I don't regularly watch and there are really only 3 primary stats I use to judge and compare QBs. One is Comp % because it shows accuracy and I would say that if a guy is above 67% then he's in elite status, anything over 70% is just nuts. I also use not TDs or INTs separately but as the ratio, so TD/INT ratio. A low ratio is probably less than about 2.5 but guys who are above 3.0 are elite and anything over 4 is just insane. Then I use the Passer Rating because it encompasses all the other stuff. People say that PR isn't a good stat because it includes the receiver's YAC yards and so therefore it would not be a reflection on the QB, but that's simplistic thinking because when a QB's receivers have high YAC yards, it means the QB is highly accurate and can put the ball on a dime right where the receiver needs it in order to not lose his momentum to get them down the field. No one really took this seriously until Bill Walsh came on the scene with his very heady WCO in the 80s but that's why both Jerry Rice and John Taylor had all those YAC yards in the short passing game, which was designed to beat all those really tough NFC defenses like the Bears, Eagles, Giants, Redskins and later even the Saints. A passer rating above 100.0 is elite and anything over 105.or is nuts. Most QBs in our modern(ish) game with all the juicing of the passing game are in the 90s somewhere, so you could easily say that anyone below a 95.00 is a legit bad QB, especially as you get closer to 90 or below. So the sweetspot really is in the 95-100 range for most QBs that are good and can get the job done.
So you like Matt Stafford but I've never really like that guy and his stats show it. He's really careless with the ball, he gets amped up, feels the full tilt dopamine hits of completing passes and then he crashes trying to force a ball in tight coverage and it gets INT. I honestly think DCs are baiting him to do because there's no way their missing this fact so why wouldn't they if it's that easy? His PR is friggin 92, which is horrible (that's what Colin Kaepernick's lifetime PR was). He's got just over a 2.0 TD/INT rating, and his Comp % is a really lousy 62.6, so no. Stafford is a flashy guy, puts up a lot of yards and throws a lot of TDs so people love him because of the drama he brings, but he pretty much hurts his teams more than he helps them. And it's the same with Josh Allen who everybody seems to love but he's really not a good QB either. Similar to Stafford in hype and positive stats like yards, TDs, etc, but bad where it counts. The most important thing any player on the team is to not turn over the ball with a fumble or INT, but he seems to love throwing INTs as his TD/INT ratio is straight garbage at 1.6. So he absolutely hurts his team more than he helps it and people need to start realizing this fact. Herbert, no, he's not careless with the ball, but his Comp % is a very basic 65% and his passer rating is a pretty awful 93%.
All of these stats are from last season only, as you said to compare QBs straight up on talent alone, using only one season and the latest season helps to control for the flaws in development, etc. and maintains your goal here. It's really impossible to judge players on their "talent" without using stats because everybody's opinion is based on their own experiences and feelings for the player, and those can be easily misinterpretted and become overly biased.
Who else, I would say Love as he really had a good season last year, and his playoff stats are off the hook, but for me, I just don't think he's better than Geno overall. With regards to Lamar, yeah, that guys is a rare and unique talent at QB and probably scares DCs all over the league, but he has a certifiable weakness, which finally the Chiefs exposed to beat them in the playoffs. And that would be his passing accuracy, especially on deep balls. Every QB in the leauge needs to be accurate on deep balls and he's just not. The Chiefs cheated their D towards the LOS to put focus on the run game and short passing game, and it worked. And now, as this is a copy cat league, every DC is going to do the same if they can. His overall stats will most likely dip this next season because of it.
On the QBs I'd trade for, I think Mahomes is a no brainer for all the right reasons. With regards to Stroud, crap man, his stats are lights out and the fact that he's a rookie makes them even more amazing. He's got a friggin 4.6 TD/INT ratio, which isn't even human, in fact, it's slightly higher than Aaron Rodgers's career ratio which is 4.5! His Comp % is only 64%, which is odd because his PR is a very good 100.8. In the playoffs it was 100.3, unchanged, which suggests big games don't surprise him. Jake Browning only played half the season but when he took over he absolutely played better than Joe Burrow, so there might even be a real QB competition this preseason in the Bengal organization, at least in a fair world there would be. His QB/INT ratio was near Josh Allen's, but his Comp % was 70%, and that, folks, is elite. This is the first time he's played in the league and he really did crush it. While I'm not discussing totals here, he threw for almost 2000 yards, again, in half of a season, and passes were 243 with 171 caught, so he really lit it up, and his PR was a legit 98.4, for throwing only 12 TDs and throwing 7 INTs, it's really incredible that his PR was so high, I mean if he tosses 2-3 less INTs his PR would definitely have been above 100, and, again, this is without playing one down in the NFL before Burrow got hurt this last season.
One last note about Joe Burrow. He's definitely an elite QB and his stats, even including last year, definitley suggest that fact all the way around, but it's hard to compare last year's stats because they were really bad. So, yep, he was playing injured even when he was starting so that probably had something to do with it, but in general, I'd never trade for a QB coming off of any significant injury because you never know how they'll respond on the field when they get back to it.
Most everything else I do agree with you about, especially a no go on both Hurts and Lawrence and for different reasons, but you highlighted my exact thoughts on them as well.
Okay, that was a mouthful but I'm good with this :-)

There is zero chance Jackson could run the offense Seattle wants to run. Overall, he's an average QB. The only reason he's in the league is he can run. If he couldn't run he'd never even gets drafted. He always seems to have his worst games of the year in the playoffs. Year after year. He'll put of your fantasy numbers but in the end win you nothing. That's been his career up to this point. CJ yes. Age, arm talent. Offense fit. Money. He fits everything. Young? My lord he was a terrible pick. How anyone could pick short and tiny of tall and big. He could turn out. But he'll be so limited at what he can run you'll win nothing with him. That was a bad pick. How anyone could what those two play in college and take Young shouldn't work in the NFL again ever. The tape showed you what both could do. CJ upside was miles higher. He'll not never a perfect team to prop him up like Young will.

What has Richardson shown you? Nothing. He shown you he can last was it 3 games in the NFL? God no. He can run. Who cares? Name 1 running QB to win a SB? I'll wait. No, I won't I tell you right now it's none. He has to make player from the pocket. Richardson has never shown you one whole game where he could do it. It took him years to start in college on a bad team. He wasn't good enough. He won in shorts. Sadly, the NFL doesn't play in shorts they play in pads. And in pads Richardson has shown you he's not a QB.

Goff=Geno .... Laughable. Goff 1 SB and one NFC Championship.

Ya this one is a head scratcher. If there's any QB that's proven he could go to another team and not only win 10+ games a year but also win in the playoffs it's Goff. Actually he's the only one that's proven it.
      Even Stafford couldn't do it.

Goff is overrated. He played under two of the best offensive minds in football.

@florida1289 you could argue that he went from one elite-type roster with great coaching to another elite type roster with great (although different style) coaching

Gino Smith is better than at least two or three quarterbacks in the NFL is definitely at least the fourth best quarterback in the NFC West.
