I think what alot of people aren’t realizing is that the movie plays on the theorized origins on the Uncanny Valley response. Supposedly, we evolved to feel the uncanny valley uncomfortability in order to be cautious of things that looked like us but weren’t, I.E. other subspecies of homo erectus that weren’t homo sapiens. The revelation hit so much harder for me for that reason because once you know about the differences between those subspecies and our ancestors and why only homo sapiens were able to evolve and not go extinct, it makes so much more sense
That's what I was thinking. Maybe this feller is just ignorant on the subject. It's something I've been especially interested in so I am excited about the film. I would have been disappointed if it was about demons or something supernatural. I don't even like "horror" movies, but a movie about the violence early humans experience at the hands of Neanderthals (which is what I originally thought it was about) that's sounds like a great movie to me.
No body catched the names (adam & Eve), like in the Bible. Also how they are "expell" from Eden.
It's not hard to understand what the filmmakers were getting at. It's a great idea for a film. However the second half of the movie was anticlimactic, and frustrating. It just had way more potential
It was like a prehistoric 'The Hills Have Eyes' as directed by a Robert Eggers wannabe. Overall, I enjoyed it for the visuals and atmosphere, but yes, it has major pacing and storytelling issues. The lead actress was phenomenal, though.
Yeah the acting was great, just the story and pacing let it down here
You would think ancient man would be a little more grubby and dirty. Maybe even beards or facial hair. Looks like the cast just left a Starbucks.
Thats why I did not like it. 1 minute into the trailer and I said Meh!
Yep. That is exactly what ruined it for me. And the whole period blood parts
It’s a movie chill
@@isaacreyes2795 and… movies should be accurate and realistic.
@@isaacreyes2795 it is and I bought the bluray to support smaller movies. No chill needed. It is an observation a mistake in my opinion.
The amount of times i rolled my eyes watching this movie.
An ending where the neanderthals were kept as the bad guys (they kidnap a child in the middle of the night for fucks sake) would have been better.
Or an ending were it turned out that what they were feeding Heron were the members of his clan.
And yes, the movie gave Uncanny Valley vibes as soon as the "monster" is introduced.
The reason why they left was explained in the old man's story in the beginning. I didn't like it much. My main question after the (predictable M. Night) reveal was... but who killed them after all? Big plot hole
What do you mean? The first “kill” was the son who obviously lived, the second “kill” was the leader who was injured by what could technically be self defense, and later killed by his people to put him out of his misery. And the pregnant lady was killed by the idiot old man. The only person they killed with stealth was the old man as revenge for killing the pregnant lady.
@@sirthalface I'm pretty sure the old man died of his injuries. The other human (i'm assuming they're neanderthals) killed the boy with the weird hairline towards the end of the movies.
Crazy to think that modern humans have been around for 200,000 years…
What’s even crazier is that is small compared to other things
@@ALTEXTV
Haha well yes but, when you take into the entire human race as a whole (including relatives like Homo Neanderthals, Homo hiedelbergensis, Homo erectus, etc.) our clock gets pushed back to around 5 million years. But you’re right, even that’s shorter than many other lineages on earth
So many unanswered questions about our past, would love to have a Time Machine and go back in time to see certain events
@@ALTEXTV
In college I did some work on the origin of life which is a whole different can of worms but so fascinating
I could imagine!
I watched it knowing it will be neanderthals but was curious to see their depiction. I was let down a little with their depiction. It had great horror scenes
There was potential there but it just falls flat unfortunately
I was hoping for more of a nephilim or fallen angel portrayal
Since it was a horror movie, i was hoping for the more brutal depiction of them with fur and big eyes where they can see at night like true monsters. But they portrayed their strength and speed well
Its an ok movie that portrays how our own fears bring us to ruin. Not knowing what lurks in the darkness we tend to fill in the blanks with monsters and demons, when actually its people just like us. And we are just fighting and destroying our neighbors. There were a lot of needless deaths that could have been avoided had the families just connected. The human mind is a horrible weapon.
I'll list the elements I found interesting. The movie shows us the recurring human drama and existential themes.
- The monsters we fear are ourselves;
- Often the hero is the villain, or you could even say that there isn't a hero or a villain, just a war of narratives and perspectives;
- We fear what we don't know, and often create false explanations in our imagination, called everything a monster.
Secondary points, regarding human behaviour and evolution:
- The physically strongest leads;
- Women's purpose is procriation, whereas men's purpose is protection;
- The most adaptative survive (not necessarily the physically strongest).
FAQ answers
- The black goo doesnt matter, but it seems to be a mix of blood and mud from the graveyard of rotten corpses;
- The "natives" seem to be Neanderthals, but they could also be human, it doesn't really matter. What matters here is that it is not a monster as humans usually imagine;
Interesting fact:
Modern Humans (homo sapiens sapiens, ourselves) coexisted with many other types of humans, such as Neanderthals, Floresiensis, Denisovans. Tens of other types existed and coexisted before that, for millions of years. But in the end, only our kind survived. No one knows for sure why, or if homo sapiens had a role in the extinction of the other types, so this is an interesting matter. I would love to see a movie imagining different human types coexisting.
Just watched it, gonna discuss spoilers here but I thought it was okay. Now to put it in my perspective one of my favorite youtubers just did a video on how we currently view neanderthals and how they were bigger, scarier, violent, and powerful than we usually see them depicted as. So with that idea fresh in my head I was not disappointed what so ever the antagonist was a neanderthal instead of a monster. And I was enjoying the film honestly, the noises and atmosphere were tense and the brutality was just as I was expecting the neanderthal to act based on the view of them I have now. But then ofc that ending twist that makes no sense... Just why, it makes no sense they violently kidnapped the child, or brutally injuring the leader, we know it wasn't self defense because he was literally standing in place frantically looking around, the neanderthal could've just left. So yeah these things are violent in the movie, but just randomly in the last 2 minutes they're the good guys cuz why not. Why am I supposed to care about this cave person who has 3 minutes of on screen time, the other one had like 20 seconds. But ultimately the only reason I saw it as good is because I JUST recently was looking into the brutal and scary stories of neanderthals vs humans, it's a niche topic so if I was literally anyone else I think I would've hated it just the same. Probably not worth it if you're not into this topic like I am.
Thanks for that! I might have to check that out!
@@ALTEXTV Video is by the why files
It was the SJW Message creeping in. The anti-humanist perspective that the world was a better, kinder place with the pastoralists in charge, that H. Sapiens came in and screwed everything up. We're aggressive, you see: our males are headstrong and s3xually aggressive. We resort to violence first. We carry crazy superstitions (read religions) that are actually evil. We look out for #1 and throw everyone and everything else under the bus. And when we find a new happy home we ruin it. I really didn't like that theme at all.
Why would a Neanderthal murder a relatively innocent, hardly dangerous, barely threatening member of a similar bunch of intelligent, bipedal hunter-gatherers? Cuz there ain't ever enuf prey to go around. Oh. & btw -- we're still doing it, everyday in every way -- from online threats to IBMs! That's our eco-niche, triggered, I suspect genetically. & I bet experimentally testsable -- & as those of us (un)lucky enuf to survive this, already begun, mass Habbesian; (Each vs all) epoch; aka " extinction have just started to 😢 experience!
Bro. You absolutely nailed this review/critique 💯
Thankyou!! Means a lot!
Almost seemed like a shambalaya ending. Just fell flat on it's face. But really liked the suspense.
The stuff in the Forrest was great, loved that suspense build up. The twist was very flat
My big question. What was the black goo?
Have no idea 🤷🏻♂️
Tar. Or something like it- a naturally occurring thing, but put in this context it’s both an unknown to the new arrivals to this strange land and same time it’s one of the “local native” tricks used as a part of the crazy costume the Neanderthal had constructed to frighten enemies
Oops..spoiler alert
They really missed the mark on this one. Because neanderthals in reality were fucking terrifying. They literally nearly hunted humans to the brink of the extinction. It's the reason why we're afraid of the dark because they hunted us in the dark for thousands of years and it imprinted into DNA... Also, neanderthals were fucking monsters. They could literally lift the 250 pound linebacker and throw him through the goal posts. They had the strength of twenty men and they only ate meat and their favorite meal was us...
Good acting and cinematography but lacks depth. The "twist" at the end seemed like it was just for the sake of a twist and did not coincide with what happened in the first act
I’m with you there!
As someone obsessed with prehistory I was SO excited to see this movie, but was very disappointed with how it became a stupid jump scare horror movie for absolutely NO good reason. The neanderthals stalk and terrorize the humans in the dark, for no good reason, and then kidnap the boy to “save him”? Somehow the boy’s reaction is- “yeah, totally fine with being snatched in the dark, they’re just like us, its fine!!” Wtf??Makes no sense. They could have actually portrayed what it was like when these two groups met and interacted rather, than devolving to screaming and skull-bashing. Oh well… And um, fades?
Enjoyed your review so much. I liked and subscribed. I do short short reviews focusing on the 12 steps. I focused on the codependency, superstition, and loyalty. Learned a lot from your review. Keep up the great work!. Love you! No more vitae the coupon
Thank you so much! That means a lot!!
In the story they told around the campfire they said they came here looking for game to hunt because the migratory herds they usually hunted had gone missing
I really want to see this but I can't handle gore. Is it pretty easy to know when something particularly gross is coming up so that I can look away? Thanks in advance
Yeah I would say so, you will know when you are about to see it
Think the movie was great and I feel people have a problem with it because in a way it tells the Human story. From the age of colonization that the others where not like us and by killing them we did good but looking back it was bad...Great movie can say it's the best original movie I've watched this year
We dont know why any of our ancestors migrated. If i remember, the older man told a story to the child about a trip and how they were promised better land and food.
Well what is it
SPOILER ALERT
Well for me I liked the movie and the plot twist because they make you think they’re being hunt by a “creature” or “demon” only to be a human at the end. Yes I was sad that at the end it wasn’t a creature which was what I was expecting but what motivated me to like this movie after all, is that I’ve never seen a film or known a film that was made depicting that point in time where the new humans met with Neanderthals. It was just a total different type of movie that I’ve never experienced before.
I got the impression that they were from mainland Europe and they took a boat across the English channel to Britain.
I was a bit disappointed by the ending and the twist, but also appreciative of it because of how smart it was.
I also went to the AMC screening today and I agree. Truly a stunning movie with great acting and an amazing score, but the ending really left me wanting more you know.
Yeah the ending leaves it wide open
@@ALTEXTV I need to stop watching this because I don't want any spoilers lol. I can't wait to see this. Edit: I ended up watching this when I realized it already came out a few years ago. I was sorta expecting a 13th warrior type ending, boy was I wrong. Wish they made more movies based on Stone age life.
They could have done so much more.
They did great so was the ending people hate it because it's a recurring theme in our history to this day
nice ceiling fan.
Thanks mate! It’s my favourite one
Lmao
Is it all subtitles?
Yeah it’s not in English
This movie is the blurry vision of human nature just showing life back then the uncertainty what our ancestors had to deal with had to live through which is still seen today our biggest flaw as humans is automatically thinking we know something and relying on our emotions to decide our actions this whole move is the first light of truth when it comes to life and all of its complexity
The twist reminds of the 13th Warrior "Wendols"
I enjoyed most of it. Yet the twist felt lacking, and doesn't make sense.
I feel they cut alot out
Its Quest For Fire, The Descent and 13th Warrior lol
100% agree with the review

I found it creative. Instead of doing another "nameless, faceless evil" movie, they made it something more...scientific: Neanderthals. Of course, I'm fascinated by Anthropology and Neanderthals in general. To think: if your ancestors left Africa (ie: Europeans, Asians, etc.), then you carry some Neanderthal DNA within you. I know I have 2% Neanderthal DNA from my 23andme results. Basically, only pure blooded Africans wouldn't have any Neanderthal DNA (unless that's changed). Anyways, I thought this was a cool movie that made you think. I can see how it might be divisive though.
Glad you loved it!!!
The thing about people who review movies I think they should write a script take it to the bank get a loan and let's see ... if we gonna get a James Cameron 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Doubt a bank will give me a loan to make my movie, I’m confident they wouldn’t just go here take 80-100 million 😂
@@ALTEXTVNo, they wouldn't, film financing doesn't work like that. Check out how Stuckman financed his film project, kickstarter is your friend. Or if you wanna go old school the stories of how Romero, Hopper and Raimi financed their first flicks is nothing short of fascinating.
It was good. I really liked it.
I'm not a fan of having an entire movie in a fake language. I see what they're going for, but just doesn't feel like it pays off enough to justify forcing me to read subtitles throughout the movie.
I will wait for the book to come out, if I need to read a movie it is a waste of time because you miss the movie reading
Americans...
The whole thing was inaccurate, why was there hair so short, with no beards. Even if they had a way of actually shaving and cutting their hair, why would they when the area was so cold that extra facial hair would keep them warm. Also, why were the dark skin people there.
By that time all humans in that area would've been very pale, but they forced diversity into it for the screen.
Also when they're travelling across the land there wasn't a single animal in sight.
In a place like that there would've been muskox and has no shortage of birds.
I nodded off as well in the beginning 😴
It looked cool for sure . I liked it ..not the best movie . But it was definitely a movie
It has really high moments with the suspense that works really wel
The human element got apparently totally lost on this reviewer, perhaps he’s running an action-horror channel idk- my first time here
The trailers made it come off like it was a demonic creature that was hunting them. Hence why I went in thinking that. Wasn’t a big fan of how the twist played out and I know I’m not the only one
The movie made it seem it’s a monster with great strength and power but it’s just a deranged person dressed up with headgear. Yet in previous scenes we see bones and ripped up animals. And it tore the face off of Adem. So the mystery and the final reveal just doesn’t add up. I expected a lion and in truth it’s just a kitten.
So it wasn't a dinosaur or monster that was killing them?
Nope it’s not a monster or anything like that
SADLY 😢
If you wanna watch cavemen fighting dinosaurs I can recommend you a couple of Rachel Welch and a Ringo Star flicks.
So what was it? Another group that are cannibals?
Do you want me to spoil what it is?
@@ALTEXTV No, tell me 😉
Okay spoilers:
It’s 3 dudes who are trying to help them
@@ALTEXTVare the Neanderthals good then?
Yeah there isn’t any bad people, just miscommunication
Hated this one. Sooooo slow paced. Other movies Alpha and Iceman were so much better. I recommend them.
This came out in 2022
Not in the states and other countries it didn’t
So it says this is a movie recap you didn't recap the movie
The title says movie review
Wished it was dinosaur or some animal instead it was just Neanderthals. Humanoids horror are overdone too much in horror movies
That would be cool like the night feeder in primal.
Why would you assume it was a demon? Clearly primitive man turns everything they don't understand into a monster, demon or god. Have you ever seen the 13th Warrior?
All I saw was the trailers, I had no idea what it was about and from what the trailer looked like that’s what it came across as.
I saw the movie last night. I was super disappointed!!!! This movie could’ve been great! But there were no monsters. Lame
It just Neanderthals vs human😊
Not really. More of Neanderthals just trying to scare the humans (because theyre good and peaceful), and it turns into human v human and human v Neanderthal. They only fight when it's self defense. They good, we bad.
So its not a movie about homosapiens and neanderthals?
It’s a horror movie that makes you believe it’s something else then they reveal it’s not what you think
It sure looked like a neanderthal to me lol just less hairy 😅
The movie was a letdown. Ugh.
Yeah it is
Nailed the review! I thought there was tedium in the middle for suspense, but that ending.... the whole thing unraveled. Especially the Brother's (new leader) death and the Heron and Adel reveal... suddenly I felt like I was stuck in a SJW lecture, and the "demon's" actions no longer made any sense. Great, plausible motivations, actions, and consequences for the first 85 minutes, last 5 make no sense... thoroughly disappointed.
So you mean to tell me when they kidnapped the son "humans" were that strong to just drag the boy that fast and tense as if it was a strong entity present gtfoh 😂
Yeah I know it doesn’t really make sense that twist. Plus adams jaw aswell on top of that plus the bone yard
@ALTEXTV this movie is perfect blend of the ritual and wrong turn 😂
The potential was there for a great horror film about them encountering an entity but they went the opposite direction

Didn’t like it. To be fair if I knew what it was would not be a moving would go out of my way to see.
Story was lacking. No connection to the characters. Lack luster twist. For promoting it as a “scream” unseen is a stretch. Not horror or suspenseful. Feel like this will make more money off of people paying to not know what they are seeing than when it actually releases.
I walked out after 20 min.. just didn’t feel engaged 🫤
