Hi there John, that is quite the Mario Bava collection. Bava is in my top 10 favorite filmmakers of all time, and his work really is just like looking at a painting, his use of color and how he places the camera are exquisite. Giallos to me are moody Mystery Thrillers, not Slashers or Horror, and Bava to me is the King of Suspense in Italy. A lot of his style came from the tutelage of his father Eugenio who was a sculptor of local renown. Eugenio worked on and off in the early days of Italy's foray into filmmaking, his first big contribution was working on the visuals of 1924's Cabiria, Italy's first film to gain international success, and he capped off that phase of his career working with son Mario on Black Sabbath. Bava loved working with father even when the man could be a rigid perfectionist, and his work shows his father taught him well. Hercules in the Center of the Earth aka Hercules in the Haunted World and The Whip and the Body were the first two experiences I had with Bava, Hercules in the Center of the Earth I loved, and The Whip and the Body was weird, but I do want to give it another shot. It wasn't until I saw both the segment The Telephone from Black Sabbath and The Girl Who Knew Too Much that I realized he was a director I wanted to give more of my viewing time to. The original Italian language version of The Telephone offers one of the best double twists in Bava's storytelling prowess, I wasn't expecting either of those twists my first watch, and I ended up rewatching that segment immediately just to see how he built it up. The Girl Who Knew Too Much is a fine "who-dun-it' Mystery story, and again Bava gives his viewers a unique twist. Kill Baby Kill is Bava's love letter to Gothic storytelling, and his unique style of using color is at its best. Lisa and the Devil is a strange and fascinating work from Bava, him at his most Avant Garde I might say. A good non-Horror of his is the sword play Viking Adventure film Erik the Conqueror which starred Blood and Black Lace lead Cameron Mitchell. I still need to see Blood and Black Lace, Planet of the Vampires, Bay of Blood, and one or two others, but I do have a lot of his work in my collection too. I have 11 Bava movies. Just got Caltiki, great Arrow release. Jungle shots reminded me of King Kong, very cool look. And the found footage was a surprise. Laughed when the commentary mentioned it, repeating what I said when I saw it. Two thumbs up.
Bava is a genius in every aspect mate 🤩🤩👍👍 yeah I get that King Kong reference 👌👌 it stands quite a bit above most monster movies of the time and I think this could be one of the first ever filums with the use of found footage!! 😲👏👏 yeah they did comment on it and also Kim Newman mentioned it in his appraisal of the movie 🤩 really great movie all round mate 👍👍🤩🤩

Hi John. Danger:Diabolik is super fun, 60s Spy movie with incredible set pieces. Mario Bava can make $50 look like $500 dollars on screen. Erik the Conqueror is really good too, Bava’s version of the Vikings with Kirk Douglas which is a terrific swashbuckling romp. Hercules in the Haunted World also with Christopher Lee has his Gothic lighting effects on full display as Hercules descends into Hades/Hell. It’s full Sword and Sandals meets Gothic!!

Danger: Diabolik was a major inspiration for The Beastie Boys music video for 'Body Movin'' and there's an Aussie BR of the film from Via Vision. I think Paramount provided a DVD copy over here years ago. Personally, I didn't enjoy this particular Bava outing.
Fascinating collection. I have not heard of Mario Bava, but whether I have seen any of his movies, it is possible .. from video libraries during the 80's when they had the so called video nasties, like "I Spit on your Grave" which I do remember hiring out at the time, before they got banned. Also as I mentioned in previous comments .. Late night midnight cinema had plenty of similar horror movies. I must admit I do love a good black & white old horror movie. I may not be into slasher movies [ Never seen Friday 13th or Scream even ] Loved Halloween ! .. I know, go figure. Lol One of my all time favourite old horror movie is "Night of the Demon" Starring Dana Andrews. I remember seeing a clip on tv when I was a kid and it scared the heck out of me, of a man being chased through the woods at night by ... smoke !! and giant foot prints appearing on the ground. I never knew the movie name, till I got the dvd and discovered it's 'that' movie !! Wow ! My 2nd favourite is more a psycological movie with a cracking horror ending. " Les Diaboliques" [ The original .. not Sharon Stones terrible reboot ] I have watched both these movies so many times. Modern horror doesn't do that much for me. In the 70's it was "Suspiria" that was among the best around. I even bought the soundtrack and have it on vhs. The cinema used the surround sound super loud speakers they also used for "Earthquake" so you felt it. Lol [ True ! ] Whatever happened to that idea ? Cheers John, always enjoyable to watch. Hi John, nice video mate, i used to own the original Hokushin precert vhs tape of Bay of Blood. Flogged it on eBay around 15 years ago for 70 odd quid!
I believe Blood and Black Lace is the only Bava that Arrow still have the rights to. They put out a super limited box set of his films a few years back just to get them out together while they still had the opportunity. Hopefully whoever has/gets hold of his other work puts as much effort into a 4K release as Arrow would. Cheers John
Your corect, Arrow did lose the rights to the main back catalogue and thats a shame. "Macabre Visions" was released 2019 and is a beautiful set and well made like a big book even though its a bit green.

I still have a new and sealed copy of Arrow's Bava box set which doesn't include all of his titles Arrow had the rights to. Tbh I only really bought this compilation for the packaging, the book and any potential collectable value.😊
Hi John, The gallo genre is one that I’m a bit of a novice, despite watching a few Argento, Martino & Lenzi ones, fine collection & very informative as always, I do have blood at black lace on bu ray but never got around to watching 😬 yet, thanks for sharing 👍
Giallo is such a great genre Carlos, you will probably be well aware of the stars as a lot were in Spaghetti Westerns as well 😁 there's a common thread to Giallo (Murder Mystery) but the range of that is quite wide 🤔 like them to have unique twists, but can't beat a killer dressed in black hiding in the shadows 😀😀 Blood and black lace is a fine example of Giallo Carlos 😁😁👍👍
I got the .. BLOOD AND BLACK LACE 4K.. from Arrow. I also got the German .. PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES 4K. Try to get it if it's still available. I believe it's region locked tho. Supposedly most of Bava's films are tough to license out. Whoever the Italian rights is, wants big bucks now for the 4K rights. So I don't think we'll be getting BLACK SUNDAY and BLACK SABBATH on 4K anytime soon.

Apparently, Bava wasn't enamoured with actors in general but he had a wonderful working relationship with Boris Karloff. The Italian horror legend also considered FDFAAM to be his worst film. Riccardo Freda had something of a reputation for falling out with producers and abandoning projects which is when Bava was called in to complete the relevant effort with his particular set of skills. Once the word spread that Bava could be relied upon to finish a film on time and under budget he had his foot truly in the directorial door. I saw an interview with Cameron Mitchell once where he had nothing but the highest praise for the Spaghetti spookfest supremo.

Apparently, Bava would leave the set whenever they'd shoot the possessed Elke Sommer scenes in THOE. The profanity was too offensive for him.😬 I also remember reading years ago Bava allegedly contributed some uncredited FX work on Inferno but I could be wrong.🤔

I've been thinking about trying out some Italian horror for quite a while now. I may start with Mario Bava. Out of curiosity, do you prefer to watch these movies in the original Italian language with English subtitles or do you watch them with English dubbing?
Please do give Italian horror a go, Kevin and Bava's back catalogue is a perfect place to start. I also recommend looking into some Spanish spine-tinglers such as The Blind Dead series and Paul Naschy's output.😉
Hi Kevin, Mario Bava is a great place to start mate!! Also highly recommended Fulci & Argento to give you a wide range of classics, then you could move onto deeper cuts like Umberto Lenzi & Sergio Martino if you like what you see 🤔🤩 I do watch these with English dubs as that was how I first saw them back in the day and I wasn't used to the Italian language when I first heard it 😵💫 saying that if a movie is only available in Italian I don't mind that at all 👍 you could try them both, remember that the dubbing can be a bit loose lipped at times as most of the actors were from different countries speaking native tongues.....sometimes the dubbing is really hilarious at times! But I do find Italian Cinema to be highly entertaining Kevin 🤩🤩 let me know of you pick some up and your thoughts on them 😁😁👍👍

I still have a new and sealed copy of Arrow's Bava box set which doesn't include all of his titles Arrow had the rights to.
Tbh I only really bought this compilation for the packaging, the book and any potential collectable value.😊

Giallo is such a great genre Carlos, you will probably be well aware of the stars as a lot were in Spaghetti Westerns as well 😁 there's a common thread to Giallo (Murder Mystery) but the range of that is quite wide 🤔 like them to have unique twists, but can't beat a killer dressed in black hiding in the shadows 😀😀 Blood and black lace is a fine example of Giallo Carlos 😁😁👍👍
I got the .. BLOOD AND BLACK LACE 4K.. from Arrow. I also got the German .. PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES 4K. Try to get it if it's still available. I believe it's region locked tho. Supposedly most of Bava's films are tough to license out. Whoever the Italian rights is, wants big bucks now for the 4K rights. So I don't think we'll be getting BLACK SUNDAY and BLACK SABBATH on 4K anytime soon.

Apparently, Bava wasn't enamoured with actors in general but he had a wonderful working relationship with Boris Karloff.
The Italian horror legend also considered FDFAAM to be his worst film.
Riccardo Freda had something of a reputation for falling out with producers and abandoning projects which is when Bava was called in to complete the relevant effort with his particular set of skills.
Once the word spread that Bava could be relied upon to finish a film on time and under budget he had his foot truly in the directorial door.
I saw an interview with Cameron Mitchell once where he had nothing but the highest praise for the Spaghetti spookfest supremo.

I also remember reading years ago Bava allegedly contributed some uncredited FX work on Inferno but I could be wrong.🤔

I've been thinking about trying out some Italian horror for quite a while now. I may start with Mario Bava. Out of curiosity, do you prefer to watch these movies in the original Italian language with English subtitles or do you watch them with English dubbing?
Please do give Italian horror a go, Kevin and Bava's back catalogue is a perfect place to start.
I also recommend looking into some Spanish spine-tinglers such as The Blind Dead series and Paul Naschy's output.😉
Hi Kevin, Mario Bava is a great place to start mate!! Also highly recommended Fulci & Argento to give you a wide range of classics, then you could move onto deeper cuts like Umberto Lenzi & Sergio Martino if you like what you see 🤔🤩 I do watch these with English dubs as that was how I first saw them back in the day and I wasn't used to the Italian language when I first heard it 😵💫 saying that if a movie is only available in Italian I don't mind that at all 👍 you could try them both, remember that the dubbing can be a bit loose lipped at times as most of the actors were from different countries speaking native tongues.....sometimes the dubbing is really hilarious at times! But I do find Italian Cinema to be highly entertaining Kevin 🤩🤩 let me know of you pick some up and your thoughts on them 😁😁👍👍

The Antichrist is indeed a solid offering. Probably the best of the Italian cash-ins on The Exorcist.👍

If i'm not wrong, Joe D'Amato was the cinematographer on TA.
Intervision/Alpha released the film under the title 'The Tempter' on pre-cert VHS and a DVD copy came out as TA from Optimum Releasing years ago.
