    God is an Examiner of Hearts. In one of the saddest passages in the Bible, Moses and Aaron strike the rock instead of speaking to it. But God knows their hearts; they were angry and claimed that they would bring water from the rock, not God (“Must we bring you water from this rock?”). God knew their hearts. God also calls for the tithe, and He wants “cheerful givers” (2 Cor 9:7). “Examine my heart,” David cries, at Ps 26:2, and see if there is any way that offends You. “Have mercy on me, a sinner.” And thank You for testing my heart.

    Man I can empathize with the Children of Israel and their frustration. Their have been times in my life where I’ve followed the call of God and walked where he told me and the realized it APPEARED that nothing was happening and the provision wasn’t there. I griped, complained, and lamented for the past.
    Yet God did provide at the right time even when I was frustrated and angry at Him. Why? Because he is a loving God who does provide. It can he hard but we must press in to His presence. That is my God-shot.

    So much in this. W anyone as w Moses, a little bit of sin (disobedience) affects the whole. And people follow leaders. That's why they are held more accountable. The world watches us as Christians. Do we thrive in the blessings of obedience & show our joy is in Him or does our disobedience cause discouragement to bring our focus on us, self serving instead of fully giving it all to the Lord, trials, blessings, all of it & living fully dependent on & in Him? A true visual of "That's where the joy is" in Him & being found faithful in obedience to reap those blessings, spiritual & otherwise. His fruits.

  • @marklharmon
    @marklharmon Před rokem +28

    God loves His people and provides them and us with a powerful lesson of obedience as well as a prophetic picture of Christ.
    Moses' and Aaron's sister dies and both men are clearly grieving. The people grumble about the lack of water and Moses and Aaron pray to God for His answer. The people are in the same place, Meribah, where they had grumbled decades earlier and where Moses struck the rock once to provide water. God appears and clearly instructs Moses to take the staff as a symbol of God's power and simply speak to the rock and water will be provided. Moses in his grief and emotional weakness expresses his frustration to the people and instead strikes the rock - not once, but twice. God lovingly provides the water for the people, but there is a serious consequence for Moses and Aaron - they would not enter the promised land nor lead the expression of God's promise to the people. This was a grievous disobedience to God not just because he literally disobeyed God's command, but because the rock from which water flowed (flowing water is also known as living water) is a clear picture of Christ. Christ is the rock and the source of living spiritual water that cures all thirst forever in salvation. If we look back on the events of Exodus 17:6, we see that this is a repeat so that a new generation may be taught firsthand the spiritual lesson of obedience and faith. In that instance, as well as this one, God is standing on the rock and when Moses struck the rock - this time and the time prior - he was actually striking God on the rock. It was necessary for Christ to die only once for all of humanity's sin and this is pictured by the prior instance where Moses struck God while He stood on the rock. This time was intended to symbolize that people must simply obey God in faith to access the living water and be saved from death. Instead, Moses failed because he took on his own initiative and effort and broke the prophetic meaning God was providing here. Moses and Aaron were both grieving and angry and participated with anger for the people in their hearts. God is compassionate and merciful but, even so, He expects the complete and faithful obedience of His representatives. They must faithfully express His emotions and will before the people and not their own.
    God loves His people and provides meaning, both superficial and deeper spiritual meaning, to those who love Him and earnestly seek Him in love.

    I don't think Edom's forbidding Israel to pass through their land was "reasonable" - or, if it could be seen that way, it was not righteous nor compassionate. Edom knew that Israel had suffered under Egypt and in the desert. Edom knew that Israel (Jacob) showed generosity it Esau when they last met. It was a great offense in Semitic culture to not offer hospitality - even to strangers, let alone relatives - yet Moses offered to pay for everything (and they had the means to pay). Edom had become corrupt, and their corrupt spirit was later seen in how they opposed and even join Israel's enemies to attack Israel, which eventually led to Edom's destruction as prophesied by Obadiah (ch 1).

    I realize now, that Aaron treated the striking of the rock as superstition "if he says a certain thing or does a certain thing, God will respond a certain way" He ignored God's actual command. A disobedience, and an act of presumption. God's reaction seems so harsh but He was preparing a people of His own to go out to the nations so they had to be obedient. It's those old ways of Egypt in another form. Acting as a magician calling on a little "g" god to respond to a certain incantation or formulated act of will with some magical miraculous response.

    @antoinettehereford8180 Před rokem +3

    God reestablished the roles of the Levites & priests. Miriam, Moses' sister, dies in Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin & is buried. The people once again quarrel with Moses & Aaron because there is no water, longing for Egypt. The truth is, they could've been in the promised land already, a land flowing with milk & honey, had they not rebelled against the Lord by letting fear keep them from taking that land. But, they are dealing with the consequence the Lord gave them & have to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. I'm sure this continued quarreling left Moses & Aaron frustrated. God tells Moses to speak to a rock so that water flows out, but instead, he struck the rock in anger. The Lord still allowed water to flow, but because of disobedience to God's word, neither he nor Aaron will enter the promised land. Moses sends word to Edom requesting passage through their land & is refused. Aaron is stripped of his priest garments. They are put on his son Eleazar, then Aaron dies. How sad. Moses sees a sister and a brother die. Eleazar sees an aunt and a father die. Moses won't get to enter the promised, and himself will eventually die. Hard reading today. But God is sovereign. God requires obedience, and if we disobey, there are consequences. We're seeing those consequences continue to unfold with this people we know as Israel.
    As always, TLC, thank you so much for today's recap.

    • @catherinescourtis

      It's difficult to wrap our heads and hearts around. I did a study once where it was explained that 1. God is very specific, and details are important, so we must be clear and obedient in each thing no matter how small; nothing is said or omitted without reason;
      2. God is not so predictable. I know that's contradictory, but He doesn't want us to make assumptions based on what we think we know, including in How God has acted or directed us before. We need to wait on Him and follow His commands to the letter. We need the Holy Spirit. We need to think, speak, and act as guided with His discernment.
      Maybe Moses got a little prideful here. He's been in this position for almost 40 years after all. Or maybe he and Aaron were never going to spared as part of the older generation.

      Would it make you feel better to be reminded that Aaron made a calf of gold for the Isrealites to worship and gave the calf credit for the deliverance of the Isrealites out of Egypt? Aaron was told the beginning of the journey that he wouldn't be going to the promised land. He spoke out against Moses at least once after that incident, and the Lord had to correct him. Yes, it seems harsh that "the one time" Moses was disobedient to God's directions because of anger or pride got him banned from the promised land. He was so close. I have to remind myself that God doesn't want me to take His deserved glory or praise. The people of Isreal needed to look to God for their trust and salvation. They might have started worshipping Moses. The younger generation needed to keep their focus on the God who was their provider and salvation. I hope these thoughts might help.

      I struggled with that in the past as well. If felt very unfair to me. A pastor friend of mine cleared it up for me though. In that area, there is a lot of minerals in the water so over time, a place where water is flowing, will become coved with minerals and then the water stop flowing. It is not unusual to hit a rock and get water. The people there would have know. That. God asked Moses to speak to the rock so that the people would have been witness to God mighty power. No one can speak and make water come forth, only God. By striking the rock, Moses denied God the miracle. He chose his own way and it cost the people the witness of that miracle. Who knows how uplifting that miracle could have been for the Israelites. I have been to Israel and stood where Moses stood right before the Israelites when into to land and that rock is still flowing! There is a lush green spot in the middles of dry desert. It is amazing! Also! Moses got to go to heaven!! He was freed from the struggle. He had done his part and I would argue, his reward was great. I think Arron was punished because he and Moses were working together and he did stand up to Moses. He would have known the instructions too, but said nothing. There is a saying “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”. My assumption is that was Arron’s sin.

      Not tithing will not send you to hell but will cause you to miss out on blessings. Luke 6:38 reminds me to give generously because He wants to bless me so I can bless others.

    I'm wondering about the tithes in that they would go to the priests and the priests would then give 10% of their 10% to God in burnt offerings? To care for the Tabernacle? And then the other 90% was divided up among the Levites? Is that how churches do payroll now? How is it decided what pastors and staff are paid? I know usually a board of elders oversees giving and finances andnthat the pastors ideally shouldn't even know who is giving what but do they decide by a business worksview or a spiritual worldview how monies will be utilized and divided in the church? Just curious.

      It is interesting. My husband was a pastor for 30+ years and he never wanted to know who gave or what they gave. The church had a financial board that decided a budget. Part of the budget included Missions, which was basically a tithe to state and foreign missions and it 20 % of the income received . As a member of the church we had a say in the final budget never knew who gave what. God was so faithful in all the churches we served. Most were struggling when we came and not tithing but once they started tithing things changed. You can't out give God. His mercies are new every morning, great is His faithfulness.

      It is all decided by your own church bylaws and standards of what they decide. I know my churches give at least the bare minimum of 10% and way more to other missions, whether it is an outreach, missionaries, or even local needs. But each church being its own entity decides. The finances should be an openly public report for everyone to view.

    Aaron and his sons are given all of the responsibilities for The Tabernacle. Anyone else who goes near will die. Tenth and best offerings are to be given, sacrifices to The Lord. The Israelites have to purify themselves when unclean, or they defile The Tabernacle. Again, Israelites complain! This time about the lack of water in desert. God gives instructions to Moses and Aaron. Now God punishes them both to death in future because they did not follow instructions exactly. Aaron dies in front of everyone, as Moses gives priest garments to Aaron's son. Israelites now mourning and blocked by the people in another country, try keep them from proceeding.

      From my understanding the tithes were more food related than money. It's about giving to God first of what you have. Money isn't the only thing we are called to tithe. We're supposed to tithe everything (time, resources, possessions, etc) The Sabbath is considered our 'time tithe', or at least that's what I've been told

    • @dharshana.22
      @dharshana.22 Před rokem +1

      The tithe was given as an inheritance to the Levites. All tribes were given inheritance only after possessing Canaan. So probably I guess tithe relates to what they had to give once they possessed the land of Canaan.

    Important! Jesus is the rock!
    Previously, Moses was told by the LORD to strike the rock, and this time he was told to speak to the rock. When Moses struck the rock twice the second time, he was given effectively a death sentence (not go into the promised land)!
    Jesus was the rock that was with them in the wilderness. He was to be struck once and only once (symbolic of the crucifixion), and then Christ, resurrected to be spoken to in prayer. Moses disobeyed and broke the symbolic picture of what the Son of God would do.

      The clothing are the priestly garments, made especially for the high priest. Because Aaron was dying that honor was passing on to his son.

      I understand. I feel that way, too. I dont quite understand it, but the only thing that makes sense is that it is hard to take an animals life. Maybe knowing that you had to offer up an animal as an atonement for sin made one think twice about sinning. If it's hard to sacrifice an animal, imagine how much more it was for God to see his son sacrificed. I'm conflicted with this, though, because it almost seems like God had pleasure in it since the bible says that the aroma was pleasing to him, and they were also instructed to sacrifice animals for fellowship offerings, etc., so not just for sin. I'm not sure what I am missing here.

      God holds His leaders to a higher standard. Jesus is our source, but we also look to our leaders for direction and guidance. If our leaders are not obedient we tend to follow their lead and mirror their behavior. To not obey God is a sin and sin leads to death. Gods grace and mercy allowed the people to see the importance of obedience through the death of Moses. They probably thought the exact same way and thought twice before disobeying.

      The rock was symbolic of Jesus Christ. See 1 Cor 10:4. When Moses struck the rock in Exodus 17 it represented Christ being sacrificed once for sin. When he struck the rock again in Numbers 20 instead of speaking to it, he was showing human effort. Jesus is our source of living water, not Moses. The Bible refers to Jesus as our Rock multiple times. If God had not punished Moses, it would confuse the picture that God wanted to demonstrate in Exodus. Salvation is by faith in the sacrifice that Jesus made once and for all, not by works or following the law of Moses.

    I don’t think there is any account of Moses and/or Aaron repenting for their rebellion at Meribah. I’m sure they were forgiven, but they still experienced the result of their disobedience. At 120 years of age, I am not sure that they considered it punishment.
    I wonder if God considered it punishment or just a reprimand. Going to heaven is not a very severe punishment.
    OK, since you disobeyed me, I am going to bring you to heaven right now.

      They may have been looking at it from a different perspective, more like “I journeyed all this way and led all these people through countless trials and I don’t get to inhabit the promised land because of my sin.” That seems like a huge consequence to me!
