I like Ektachrome for it's punchier colors and harder blacks. I feel those traits work especially well with 8mm's soft details to give a feeling of viewing memories in a nostalgic way. It gives the basics so you can reconnect with the emotions when you shot it without being distracted by an abundance of detail.

After I’ve edited some of my film shots in Lightroom, they can look almost digital (especially when using fine grain films). I don’t think this would ever be possible with super 8 as that nostalgic look is so baked in. It’s such a weird thing to see super 8 footage with brand new cars in it and people wearing face masks. So surreal

Do not give up on the super 8mm The Ektachrome Super 8 has its place, but you are correct. It’s dynamic range is limited. For color you need to go with the Vision 3 negative film. I shoot both regular 8mm (my preference actually) and Super 8. My favorite camera is the R10. Just try shooting one roll of V-3 50D and a roll of the 500T. Then make your decision.

Hey, great video! I am using Ektachrome since it has become available again, but mostly in 16 mm and home processing. The results are stunning when projected on a screen, not nostalgic at all! I recognized in your shots, that you sometimes override the latitude. If the main object is in the shadow, the exposure control has to be taken pointing into the shadow, then the result gets brighter. For sunlight landscape and beach scenes, a polarization filter would increase the color contrast and give you that up-to-date look.

Well I gotta agree with you: Only the well-lit scenes did really look good. Oh and just one thing: You sometimes say 8mm when you mean Super 8, but 8mm is its own format that is made by shooting two halves of a 16mm film separately by turning the film around and splicing it afterwards.

Hey Jason! Saying that you're having doubts about shooting 8mm again really hit home. And I get it, it's really a bit expensive considering how it performs beyond nostalgic purposes.
I think maybe doesn't feel too worth the hassle, but maybe it's not the fact of shooting moving picture film, but the fact that it is 8mm. I'm studying cinematography right now, and or class and I are trying really hard to get our next project to be shot it 16mm film. I'm telling you this because although it might not seem like it, it's a huge leap in image quality, and still much better than average student cinema cameras today.
Dunno, maybe I'm getting too close, and if so, forgive my intrusion, but why don't Caleb, Monica Baxter and yourself rent a bolex for the weekend, or maybe even an Arriflex SR? Looking the prices for super 8, 16mm seems more worth it.
I hope you're all safe and doing fine.
