Thank you for your precise of our pre-Tudor kings you explained the battle of Bosworth so well, all the changing of sides by the supposed nobleman, and that the battle site was further down the hill from those flags. The battle of Hastings site has been moved from the original battleground by about 1/2 mile, this has been proved by further digging and documenting.
It was mid October in whatever year 82/83? I was in that area. My dad had hoped we would go from the Welford arm on the Grand Union and we had a hire Sat PM-Sat AM. Dad had hoped we would get upto the end of the Ashby but sadly we ran out of time and ended up turning in the entrance to the Ashby & heading back to Welford. I still have the red Nicholson's books we used in the eighties. It's lovely seeing the Ashby with missing out back then. Sadly my dad is no longer with us as I'd love to have shown him your channel.
I envy your lovely lifestyle, just travelling anywhere on your amazing adventure, doing what ever you please, mooring up when You fill like a cup of tea, awesome
I love George’s fur-cut! When you get to Snarestone, there’s a really nice pub above the tunnel called The Globe. Nice food, beer, staff, decent wi-fi and they’re dog friendly too 👍
Thank you for this vlog, so so interesting.... Oh George what a tenacious ball guy he is.....I do hope that Michael's back is healing, you both look so well.... Do keep up the vlogs we wait to see each episode.....
George is a relentless ball guy! Michael’s back is doing fine at the moment thanks for asking. Week keep the vlogs coming, thanks so much for watching and commenting. Jo
A brilliant summary of the Battle of Bosworth Field - by shear coincidence I have spent several hours today looking at maps of the area and accounts of the battle and your recital confirms everything I’ve read - if I’d seen your vlog earlier it would have saved me a lot of time ha - I believe Atherstone has a claim on at least part of the battle and accounts suggest that Richard may have breakfasted in Sheepy Magna and watered his horses at ‘King Dicks Hole’ before meeting Henry on his approach from Merevale - all very interesting especially as my Son now lives adjacent to Royal Meadow in Atherstone - I’m taking my metal detector with me next time I dig his garden :)
It's a fascinating bit of history, isn't it? I find it so interesting to think of how it was really just a somewhat unremarkable event to the chroniclers of the day, unlike say Crecis or Agincourt, where arguably there was less of a real turning point in history, but where so much more detail and evidence remains. Have fun detecting! M
Minimal List - as a bit of a map nut I can’t help but think that if you’re going to have a battle that effectively draws a close to the medieval period and changes England forever then where better to have it than at the geographical centre of the country
True. Although to take that idea to its natural conclusion, you'd have to have put the Spanish Armada in the Bosworth Water Leisure Park before setting it alight.
Right past the Triumph factory and nary a word, being the proud owner of a Rocket 3 I am devastated - especially seeing as how Triumph is the oldest known motorcycle manufacturer (contrary to what the history books might tell you). It says in the bible "and lo the roar of Moses triumph could be heard throughout the Holy Land" - and if it says it in the bible it must be true (did I mention that I am a devotee of the Billy Connolly institute for religious edification). Thanks again for a great vlog guys (though you both look 'all in' at the end lol
We couldn't stop at Triumph without first finding space on the boat to store one! I did a sort of "Long Way Up" through Vietnam a few years back on a Yamaha scooter, a Triumph would have been overkill, but still awfully nice! M
Poor George having a haircut just before the big freeze hit you guys. Please keep him warm. Hope you are well stocked with coal and food. All the best from a warm Sydney in Oz.
I know, we didn’t time it very well did we. Poor George. Don’t worry, we he is toasty warm in the boat! We love Sydney, we have friends in Springwood in the Blue Mountains, we last visited I. 2015! Jo
Yup, Springwood is a real nice spot, they get light snow in the wintertime. Where I live, north of Sydney on the Northern Beaches, it only gets down to around 5C. And no snow. Just keep it over there, we don't want it. LOL.
Yep, Lord Stanley married the future Henry VII’s mother in 1472, making Stanley the new King’s stepfather. Apparently it was a marriage of convenience, and she continued to sign her correspondence Margaret Richmond, after her second actual (first not dissolved before puberty) husband, Edmund Tudor, Henry’s dad. The family trees of the time were more brambles, really. M
@@MinimalList Here in Tennessee, not only are family trees brambles but some of them (like mine) don't branch! lol We are doing the videos from oldest to newest. Thanks for taking the time to do this, especially in the current situation.
Come to the Caldon canal and cruise alongside steam trains...... my local canal and one of the nicest on the system Nev NB Percy ( going to sleep listening to the ice creaking along the side of the boat )
Very educational. I have noticed that Michael is quiet good at history. Is that just a hobby or was it a past profession? Like teaching? I am guessing you don't have bow thrusters on your boat? I can't imagine trying to control that much length in a narrow canal in a strong crosswind. Quite the haircut for George, more of a summer cut but with his energy I am sure he will stay warm. Watching him try to get your attention during the history lesson was a riot. I noticed how far you moved from the town, don't you worry about being frozen in and not being able to get food and water? Or having to walk a LONG ways to get it. And how do they handle it if you are on a four day mooring and you get frozen in for an extended period?
Just a hobby; I'm whats known as an autodidactic polymath ... aka "A Know-It-All" ... I'm fascinated by pretty much anything that isn't sports or music. Wouldn't mind teaching, but I've never done it professionally, just ran some tutorial sessions for a few companies over the years. We do have now thrusters, but they're not as powerful as people think, and won't do a damned thing in the wind. They're dead helpful pushing away from short, or reversing, but a stiff wind will overpower them right quick. We actually ended up mooring just a 1/2 mile from town, not a bad walk at all, though a bit worse in the biting snow. When you know this sort of thing's coming you try and get somewhere sheltered with reasonable access to services, and this isn't bad at all. M
Loved the video as always, but as someone who was born in Hinckley, I am slightly disappointed at the typo in the title, but I'll get over it...perhaps
You've invented tilting narrowboats that can go faster round corners 😂😂😂 Now can you invent tilting solar panels that look good as I'm really struggling to find something that a) works b) looks great. Do yours fit round the curve of the roof? Or are the straight?

hi sometimes when you are speeding through the country side could you think of us on the other side of the ball and slow down as we in OZ havent seen "the old country" thanks
Really nice film -I enjoyed that thanks. With reference to the shallow water aspect - I assume you are familiar with en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squat_effect - I realise that being on a canal does not give you a whole load of options - but essentially reduce speed but retain enough to maintain rudder authority.
If I'm doing the math right in my head at nearly 11PM, I think it's pretty hard to substantially involve squat effect with a narrowboat moving at canal velocity unless you're in water just 2-3 inches deeper than our draft. M
the realities are complicated - depends on the width of the canal and the UW volume and shape of the boat - and the contours of the canal bed. you would only be interested in squat when conditions were marginal (i.e. almost touching bottom) - you might be right on the 2 to 3 inches - I am not going to exercise my grey cells at this time of night - I have just finished proof reading my daughter's Masters dissertation and I am now in gross neural deficit!!
