Allen's the one that gave them their sound for sure
Collins’ penchant for breaking chords up, hitting diads etc. along with his natural rhythm gives some great insight to his sense of melody and musicality. More than once , when learning a Skynyrd song, you pick up on these little details and wonder how did he come up with that- but it “works” . That was his magic , IMO
Great input! Collins represented straight-up electricity on the stage.
I've always loved the tone of Allen's Firebird. I kinda regret never getting one. I felt his explorer fell a little bit short.
I have enjoyed all your video's on Skynyrd. Too bad you never got to interview Allen. He was one of the nicest people

Allen may be the most underated in rock guitar history.
Allen, Gary, Ed, Steve, & Rickey & Hughie really are, overlooked by music snobs. All World Class in their own right. Tom deserves a mention also, for his ability to channel & play & teach these guys styles with so much accumen 🎸

Allen’s Rythm playing is a huge influence on my Rythm playing. Very percussive and rhythmic, almost like Malcolm Young in some Aspects. That P90 on his Firebird really made it to!

I’ve always thought the acoustic guitar on the studio version of free bird was superb! Turns out that was Allen too. I’ve had trouble replicating his style

Allen is a tremendous Rythm Player, probably the best in the band imo Altough he could certainly more then hold his own in the lead parts with the other three guys

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and skill Tom. Allen Collins a fantastic guitar player. His solo on Freebird is probably the one he is most known for, but I think his solo on Needle and the Spoon is amazing, great use of the wah pedal.

Man if you don't already know. Tom is really really good at deep diving into the little nuances and tiny technique aspects of what great guitarists are doing. And just as important he knows how to explain it to us. Just wait and see what he pulls out.

Opposite of Gary. Ive always thought that Allen looked and sounded to me like he was trying to push the strings thru the neck. Where as Gary looked like someone needed to run up there and tell him. D. And G. And c. To me he was so laid back that youd almost think he wouldn't be in time. Which thats a lot to do with him barely moving his picking hand.😮
