I remembered a big group of us watched it and halfway through the movie my girlfriend blurted out “it’s the cripple” and the rest of us dismissed her conclusions as alcohol induced fantasy. After the reveal she purposely moonwalked in front of the big screen just to rub it in and we had a good laugh and needless to say we never underestimated her conclusions again.

Yeah, I think that idea crosses the mind of a lot of people, Mary included, once they tumble onto the idea that he might be an unreliable narrator. But usually just as a one stab in an array of possibilities. Good on your girlfriend for sticking to her guns!

@@Hexon66 I do wonder though how much of that is true. The person referred to as Kobayashi picks up Roger Kint (the cripple) at the very end suggesting there was some truth to what he said. The name likely different, but he clearly seems to work for him. He's implied to be Keyser Söze, but that's not even for sure since also that could have been made up. I suppose it's not meant to be known for sure.

I saw it when it came out and I never really understood how so many people didn't see that ending coming from a mile away. He's the only guy still alive and is narrating the story. And he's the stereotypical guy you'd least suspect, almost to a comical degree.

@@Rowgue51 Honestly, I was mostly bored through the movie and bit on the red herring it was Keaton, especially with Palmieri's character convincing it with the voiceover flashbacks toward the end. So when Verbal picks up his gold lighter and fancy things, the printer image comes out, and then his walk straightens out, it was mindblowing.

The ending sequence was well done for sure. How they show you where he was just randomly grabbing all the names and places he was using in his story from and then the big reveal as his handicap disappears.
Even though I knew the payoff before it happened that was a super entertaining way to do the reveal. It would have just been exponentially more entertaining if it weren't so predictable.

My friend asked me why I was in hysterics. Since I was unable to answer and had tears in my eyes all I could do was point at a poster for the movie "The Usual Suspects" where some utter git had taken a black marker pen and written "it was him" with an arrow pointed to Keyser Soze!

I've seen this film so many times, and it's always enjoyable. There are so many clues, most of them are so subtle you don't pick up on until you've got a really good familiarity with everything else in the film. There's little inconsistencies in the story, and Verbal's behavior, in every single scene. Each time you watch, you can hunt for more clues, more connections, more things he says or does that doesn't make sense in the context of everything else. If you watch it enough times, I think there's enough truth scattered throughout, verifiable facts, and logical conclusions, that it is possible to understand what really happened. But I'll leave that to you to figure out for yourself.

When you watch it again, pay attention to Verbal's reactions while being interrogated. When Kujan seems to buy the story and he's not looking, you can see Verbal up close starting to smirk ever so slightly. But then when Kujan bursts in and asks about Keyser Soze, Verbal shouts "Fuck!", which he then sells successfully as "Oh no, I'm upset because I'm so small and weak and afraid and now Keyser Soze is known to the authorities and he could come after me!" But in reality Verbal/Keyser is pissed because he didn't know that someone survived who realized who he was.

This is my all-time favorite movie. The script is absolutely perfect. I remember watching it with my mom when I was in high school and she told me that she thought Soze was Verbal after he told the story of Soze's rise to power. I asked her how she knew and she said that she noticed Verbal smoking a cigarette and holding the cigarette with his thumb and index finger, rather than between his index finger and middle finger. And when Soze was mentioned as being Turkish, she said that Americans don't smoke cigarettes the way Verbal did.

There are definitely a lot of clues that stand out more on a rewatch. Early on, Verbal tells Kujan that cops usually believe what they want to, so he pushes a narrative that supports Kujan's suspicions. Kujan tells him when a caught suspect rests that is a sign of guilt, and it was Hockney that was lying down in the cell while everyone else was sitting or standing. And subtle things from Verbal, like him surveying the room for names and looking up at the bottom of the coffee cup to pull "Kobayashi."

Isnt this film wonderful? My favourite film ever. It twists and turns and does everything to convince you, you are wrong. Even when youre right. Perfect script with amazing dialogue. Did you notice how the music even plays with you? Right up to the "Bah bah" at the end, to say " screw you! We played with you all along". Its so much fun to see someone else go through the joy you had the first time you watched a special film.

Hey Marijke, What an amazing film, I’ve seen it about 20 times and every time I see something I didn’t notice before. To really be appreciated, movies like this should be watched at least twice, and with friends. Theories, twists and realizations come bubbling to the surface the more you watch a mystery noir such as "THe Usual SUspects. Great reaction.

Hey marijke, from what I can discern, Verbal mixed truth and lies to misdirect the audience and police. Once Verbal saw Agent Kuyon was fixated on Ketan he molded the story in that direction. Verbal said in the police station that police often look for the simplest explanation and never consider any mastermind. Such an amazing flick for the ages, it brought back the flim noir murder mystery but in such a clever and unexpect way.

I do not know if this is world wide terminology or not, but in America we call these kinds of films "Who done its". There is a movie called Basic (2003) with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson that is a military crime "who done it" movie that is excellent. Also a movie called Memento (2000) with Guy Pearce is amazing.

I’m very convinced Kevin spacey’s character in this movie is a true psychopath
He completely calmly toys with the police in interrogation rooms and makes his story the center of all their focus which also plays on his ability to persuade them and play the victim on top of being under an alias being completely cold blooded when it came to getting the job done and a puppet master that got his own crew killed and works as an underworld legend while maintaining his persona as verbal, masterful con artist seems normal and charming with his storytelling convinces them to let him go but plays with him the whole time making it up with words around the room
Kevin spacey and the writers sold me on this as a very precise portrayal
