- Huge Firefighter axe restoration of a big old and raw rusty German metal cleaver. See me restore this tool and engrave some custom engraving work adding a burning skull to the face of the axe.
ABOUT THE FIREFIGHTER AXE
This Is a fine old German firefighter axe from Wiebelhaus in the heart of the Sauerland region of Germany. They have a long family history of making handcrafted tools. I bought this tool for around 30$ at an auction a few years back. Now it is time to restore this massive axe and make it beautiful again.
Did you know that a firefighter axe is one of the most common tools among firefighters. Firemen often use two kinds of axes, the flat head fire axe and the pick head fire axe, the one with a spike like this one I restore in the video. They often use them to gain entry thru a door, window or chop hole in a wall.
ABOUT THE AXE RESTORATION
I started by removing the handle from the axe. This handle is protected and secured with two irons which holds the axe handle steady on place and at the same time they protect the handle in rough use and abuse. I sandblasted the axe using aluminum oxide as my sandblasting material.
I grinded a new 40-degree angle edge. A firefighter axe doesn’t need to be super sharp - it just needs to be strong so it can break down doors, windows and walls during a fire.
I added a very cool laser engraving on the cheek of each side of the axe head. The motive for the laser engraving was a burning skull head. I couldn’t choose between a bright metal skull or a black metal skull so I did both! - so please tell me which one you like the most!
I gave the edge and the spike a quick polish. I grinded the axe handle in my homemade wood lathe and toned the wood darker. Finally, I put the axe together and I gave the handle some Nordic teak oil.
I am really satisfied with this restoration. I think this came out very good and the engravings make a rough feeling to this old German tool!

Joh. Wiebelhaus & Co from Meschede which is in the Sauerland area had made this axe and you can find his logo if you google for this term

That first hit will open a page with all the registered and used marks till they went bankrupt arount 1984 after roughly 70 years they had existed.
This is why I always come back. Not just because you still keep the original pieces, but you come up with creative ways when you don't have all the proper machinery. The DYI wood lathe is what impressed me more than the restoration.
thanks so much - glad you liked the lathe 😊👍
Next restoration: your vice
Ha ha ... 😅 👌
It's not that easy there very stubborn to fix
@@AwesomeRestorationsI feel your pain I tried to restore one at my school it was so bad not even the drill could get the screws
That would be talent, bet could
ترميم جميل للفأس وأختيار أجمل لنقش ألجمجمة عمل يستحق ألثناء ❤❤❤❤👏
Stopped being an axe and is now art. Stunning
thanks so much
…aaaand he’s back. Great vid 🪓
thank you so much 😊
31 years professional firefighter. Retired Captain. I never saw an axe so beautiful! That has some age to it for sure. The pointy end looks entirely different. Ours had more of a thick curved knife shape. This one has a medieval spike kind of thing. You did a great job! Regarding the etching: really nice and clean, but they both sort of look like stickers a teenage boy would put on his biology textbook. The skull ring on your index finger (on the right) is quite nice. Love your channel. One of your 5.46 million!
The "pointy end" is a pick... and it does not look medieval at all.
@@CandiceGoddard Yes, I know it's a pick. Thank you for "pointying" that out. My thought that it had a medieval look was purely subjective and does not require your approval. What are you, German?
thanks so much for your comment. 31 years - wow thats impressive 😊😮
@@fishpants3877 i like your response.

If you need honesty, I, as a follower of yours, see that you are a meticulous person and master your work with love and credibility, whether it is a hobby or something you earn a living from. However, I did not like the choice of the skull at first, but when I saw it, I liked your taste in the choice. I hope you do not delay us for too long and try. Appear on a live broadcast and talk about any topics so that we can get to know you more and more
thank you so much for your comment 😊 I really appreciate it. Not sure about the live broadcast but never say never 😊
