I read the book recently and didn't know it had been made into a movie. I'm pretty sure it didn't have that ending though - remember it being more of a downer than that. The book was Landscape with Invisible Hand : by M.T. Anderson

The book was completely different and way better than this imo.

This movie had so much potential to be a commentary on colonialism. The colonizers (aliens) take over, tell the natives (humans) they're better off being led by them, extract resources from Earth that humans don't use, and try to justify their actions by saying, "hey, at least we introduced you with advanced technology" while overlooking the fact they also introduced a new hierarchy that puts aliens on top and humans at the bottom.
Neat. You can go back to the old tools then called wars.
Oh wait, you'd lose those and then you have no recourse of any kind because your life is literally and factually at the mercy of your invaders.
