  • A nice relaxing proficiency flight around Southern Las Vegas to prepare for my solo cross-country. This was only my forth solo flight, so please excuse my tendency to vocalize and over-explain everything I am doing - I do this to try and mentally verify I am not missing things while in flight.

    If it hasn’t been said, anticipate you right rudder when going around. That will save your life down the road. Focus on your centerline on departure and pick a target along that line in front of you to assure you won’t drift over into another runways space. All in all you did a great job!

    I’m a pre-solo student pilot with about 20hrs hours of Cessna 150 time...30 years ago! Decided to jump back in and finish my PPL but in a Cirrus SR20 G6 this time around.
    Love the plane. Just gotta stay ahead of it and learn the buttonology.
    Your videos have helped a lot. It’s awesome to watch your flights and call out the power setting, airspeed etc based on (1) what you’re doing and (2) what I’ve learned.
    Nice to see your flows and I’ve been using those as a guide the chair fly stuff between lessons. Like the pre departure brief.
    Did 6 touch and go’s lesson before last, and was just...way...too...fast. 90 KIAS on final and way too high. Fixed that on the next lesson, so I’m getting there.
    So yeah, your videos help and even back as a student, you clearly knew the plane, procedures etc.
    Good stuff. Keep posting. We’ll keep watching.

    • @CirrusMJ
      @CirrusMJ  Před 3 lety

      Wow, Kenton - that is very kind of you! Glad to hear you're back in the cockpit. The G6 SR20 is really an amazing machine, and the more we learn these planes, the 'easier' it gets. I'm glad to hear watching these helped - I did not intend for them to be instructional, rather I just make it a habit to call out a lot of the stuff that I'm doing to help me stay focused. I wasn't sure if viewers liked watching me call things out so I edit some of it out, but I'll be sure to keep more of that in going forward if I know it's helping someone!

    • @CirrusMJ
      @CirrusMJ  Před 3 lety

      And yea, if you're not ~78kts on final and power to idle over the threshold, this plane will float FOREVER lol takes a while to get it right, but once you got it dialed in your short field landings will be a breeze. I've found even coming in about 2kts slower when I'm alone in the plane helps because of the weight difference.

    • @KentonNewby
      @KentonNewby Před 3 lety

      Yup exactly. And I found in patterns last time that I did a lot better controlling speed / power...pulling back power (a lot) as I hit pattern altitude so I wasn’t going like a bat outa hell on downwind. Gave me more time to stay ahead of things too. Much easier landings except for a little crosswind.
      So for your check ride, were you allowed to use all the features the SR offers or did you have to do it old school with pen, paper, manually?
      Like diversions, the XC portion, etc? Or dealing with recovery from unusual attitudes...hit the Level button or hand fly?
      It’s funny since the SR offers so much but we might be tested without being able to use all that stuff. So not sure what to expect. :)

    • @CirrusMJ
      @CirrusMJ  Před 3 lety +1

      @@KentonNewby Unusual attitudes was hand flying, but that's easy - either pull up and pull power, or push down and power up.
      As far as the XC - my DPE let me use Foreflight to calculate diversion distance/fuel, which is nice because it calculates it for you on the spot. You really only fly to you first or second checkpoint, so that part isn't hard. They're not trying to make you fly like it's the stone age, they actually want to see you're capable of using the technology your aircraft offers you to stay safe. You just have to know how to do it all by hand in case the technology fails!

    @notachannel4u Před 2 lety

    The safety pin is not where is suppose to be, yellow lines are not centered between your legs, did not see magnetos checking, plane controls. I’m never in hurry for the check list. Mastering a safe calm and precise check list all the time is the first step of a good safe c 👨‍✈️.

    • @CirrusMJ
      @CirrusMJ  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for your concern! Safety pin location I'm assuming you mean for the CAPS handle is removed from the CAPS handle, so it's precisely where it's supposed to be lol Not sure what you're talking about for yellow lines, but if you're referring to on taxi there are things to avoid in the hangar area so we can't always stay perfectly centered for extra wing tip clearance. Also keep in mind this is probably a 2 hour flight condensed into 30 minutes, so a lot of stuff is edited out so it's not overly boring - including checking mags and flight controls. When the video cuts to the run up area you can hear me talking about how I just did the run up and what each mag drop was, so it was definitely done!
      Also keep in mind, this was one of my first solo flights so things aren't going to be perfect. You are absolutely right though - I am incredibly checklist conscious and I always perform them before, during and after all phases of flight! I strive to be a better, safer pilot every time I fly and I appreciate the advice!

      @CirrusMJ  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Brad! I've used X-Plane for 99% of my sim flying, and almost all of it was in a 737-800. So the specific aircraft knowledge obviously didn't translate, but the general knowledge, ATC comms and instrument flying all those years definitely helped. I know there is a SR22 available for X-Plane but I haven't flown it and I'm not sure how many of the systems are actually functional so I can't speak for it, but any time spent in a sim definitely helps!

    • @CirrusMJ
      @CirrusMJ  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Adam! The 20 and 22 although similar, I would say the primary mission of ownership would dictate for me which I purchased. Short flights with only 1 or 2 people, SR20. Constant longer flights or with 3-4 people constantly, SR22 for the extra payload and speed. Also if you would be flying a lot of high altitude, might want to look at the SR22T as the engine performs better at high altitudes with the turbo (and its fast as hell).

      Hey, thank you for the kind words! Yes, I did do almost all of of my training in the SR20 and started in these planes from day one. It was pretty easy to get used to, these planes have a lot of technology built into them that makes it much easier in my opinion! Enjoy the content but this vid got a dislike. And I respect Cirrus MJ enough to know why. New pilots, or aspiring ones, he is a student of aviation, not why you were drawn here because of the YT algorithm.
