do they like swampy conditions?
Red maple often occurs naturally in swamps and on other moist soils, but thrives on a great variety of soils and sites.
(As per the book _Trees in Canada_ by John Laird Farrar).
i live in central minnesota, its pretty swampy here and the red maples love it.
