Psy top #2 in the Billboards that year. BTS debuted a year later, and of course, no one expected that this achievement of Kpop going back as hight as on the charts but BTS defied all odds.

In case no one's told you yet, that's MC Hammer "Too Legit to Quit". A big blast from the past. Kpop started in the late 80's - early 90's. PSY is just one the OGs of Kpop. He's was a major Kpop star in Korea and Asia long before the Gangname Style phenomenon. He is also a producer and has his own management company called Pnation. Gangnam is a hip, high end district in Seoul.

This was all about respect - and this is what led k-pop and the west to collabs... Psy was the first followed by Big Bang... And that was the famous - MC HAMMER from the 80's/90's (Can't Touch This, Too Legit 2 Quit, The Addams Family rap) he was a lot like Will Smith, Tone Loc, Betty Boo, Run DMC, etc that didn't use profanity or come across as hard like Public Enemy and NWA, what was around at the time...

Ah I see. Thanks for writing this it actually makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. I could see a lot of MC Hammer coming from PSY

    SORRY FOR THE NOVEL
PSY's sucess in 2012 supercharged the kpop movement into the west but BTS blew the doors off the word in 2017. But 2012 and 2017 are the most important years in bringing kpop to the west. In 2011 Everyone was expecting k pop the blow up in the west because K pop artist were consistently Going viral on CZcams and social media. We just didn't know when or who would make the breakthrough. Everyone assumed it would be either BigBang or EXO.
BigBang was the biggest most influential group in Asia. No one could touch them for 6 years. They could have coasted on their reputation and still would ne considered legendary but in 2011 they got into an experimental phase and changed up their music, fashion and performances which made them become even bigger. (They were the first idol group with creative control so they could do what they wanted) They started to out grow Asian. Winning Kpop's first award from a western award show. They beat Britney Spears.
Exo had just debuted but no one had seen a group get so big so fast. They conquered China quickly and was rivialing BigBang in the rest of Asia which was unheard of for a new group. To this day I don't consider EXO as a group. They're a machine that sucks in fans and shits out money. They're relentless and never stop. If you slow them down they just grow a new branch to take you down the newest being Super M to take down BTS. Speaking of BTS you might think that considering their massive success they have made the most money in kpop history. Nope, it's EXO. Suck in fans, Shit out money.
Not saying they're music isn't good. They got bangers, just saying they pioneered the splinter groups that support the main group model you see now with NCT and the 6 million NCT splinter groups today.
Psy didn't break kpop into the mainstream in the west but he did get kids to listen to kpop and those kids shared music with their friends and followers through new social media sites and got kpop on their feeds as recommendation and some gave it a shot , liked it and the cycle continued.
In 2017 everyone has social media and kpop is treading all over again this time with hundreds of millions of potential fans if something goes viral. And all these companies are trying to get their groups infont of those eyes. EXO and BigBang are still one and 2 but it's debatable who's 1 and who's 2. Bigbang is still kpop's biggest most influential innovators but they are staring down mandatory military service at the end of the year. EXO is dominating in sales for all of kpop nearly combined and look like they're finally going to be the undisputed number 1 when Bigbang has to do their service.
A new generation of kpop groups AKA the 3rd generation haven't really distinguished themselves from the second generation except for EXO who's technically 3rd generation but older than most. Like a millennial born in the 80s, more 2.5 than 3..
Most of third generation groups are copying Girls generation for girls groups and BigBang for everyone. BigBang gave the kpop industry one more innovation of a mini album series M,A,D,E before finally combining them into a full album and a world tour before going straight into the military until late 2019 and a grand comeback concert at Coachella 2020. EXO continued to do EXO. Suck up fans, shit out money. And out of nowhere. A group that was nowhere near the top of the charts in Asia started outselling EXO. BTS was seen as just another BigBang clone in an ocean of BigBang clones from a small company but after struggling to find a foothold in the industry they did something no other group ever though of. Skip the established channels and market directly to fans. And the fans came through for them. They aggressively pushed them on social media and the group gave them more more and more innovative and access to the group and content. Every BTS fan felt like the group listened to them and was apart of a larger community and it kept growing until it became what it is today. An international, interconnected community with members who feel personally connected to these 7 guys. The community and the group are one. Bigbang was the first group to have this connection with their fans in kpop but they didn't give nearly as much to their fans a BTS has and not at this level. They learned their lesson from those before us. They innovative like Bigbang and suck in fans, and shit out money like EXO.
With change comes casualties. Bigbang, the group that shaped modern kpop has been largely forgotten. BTS brought in hundreds of millions of new fans. If you ask the average kpop fan when they started listening to kpop more than likely they'll say 2018-2020. Peak BTS era fans. Bigbang has been on hiatus since 2017. All their innovations to the genre are just seen as standard. Probably developed by a entertainment companies research team. Their style absorbed into the culture and achievements overshadowed. Every time a idol dyes their hair bright colors or a group has more than 1 rapper or lightsticks light up a kpop concert Bigbang fans smiles and think of the 5 guys who did it first.
