I’ve just bursted in tears. I’m 29 years old, diagnosed with adhd 2 years ago. All my life with strictly organised parents made me believe that I’m just messy and being organised in home is just tough. And now you have told me that I can be organised in a way which isn’t hell for me and it’s okay to do it differently. Big thank you, it’s a big change

I was getting teary-eyed, too! Everything you’re saying just made my jaw drop because you’re describing me exactly. And people tell me I have ADHD. I say things like “I just need it in front of my face so I can SEE it” or “put my meds in the counter otherwise I’ll forget to take them.” And I’m constantly hanging things on chair backs and door knobs LOL. But I’m so happy to know that it’s not just me and it’s okay to be that way and there IS an way for me to be organized. TYSM!

@@chelseaoconnor3261I'm not diagnosed but I have my suspicions. School was hell for me and my teachers were always complaining that I was away with he fairies and my mum had to defend me telling them I was perfect. I'm the clown in any social situation and hate to be quiet or still unless I'm hyper focussed on something but I'll still have my headphones on music or an audiobook. The quiz told me I'm a butterfly I think because I love hanging things places and love loud colours and decor and stuff also I'm sentimental about lots of things though getting better. Life's never fast paced enough for me to stay happy and occupied I feel like things need to be hectic to be worthwhile and if I organize and declutter too much and all there is left to do is straighten up and wipe things down I need to make a huge mess and start a project so I feel challenged. I get very anxious and down when things are boring. I'm either manic or very very down and suffocated.

YEP. I am also an ADHD butterfly 🦋 and was diagnosed in my mid-late 20s. I have always needed things out in the open, on display, and when I discovered the clutter bug types it was SO validating and helpful.
She is *not* kidding about butterflies needing the exact opposite of traditional organizing. I rent an apartment but I *legit* took all the doors off my kitchen cabinets so I could have open shelving. It made a HUGE difference! Now I am trying to figure out how to do shelving for my clothes instead of a dresser....
GOOD LUCK everyone 💖, we are not alone here.

My husband is a Butterfly (I'm a Bee) and I just couldn't deal with his messiness until I found you. His closet was such a disaster I coulldn't set a single step inside it for the shoes that covered the entire floor. It took a full day to reorganize, but after decluttering (in FIVE large black trash bags in 'quarantine' in the attic (for now), I can now get in there to hang his clothes. He now has everything he needs and wears right in front of him and I purchased a large wire 4-shelf rack at Walmart for his boots and shoes. He's actually using it and I can proudly say that it's been two months and there's NOTHING on the floor of his closet and I can run the vacuum in there! Your system has brought so much peace to our home and I can't thank you enough!

You've given me hope! I'm a bee 🐝 living with a butterfly 🦋. His clothing mess is driving me nuts. I'll be implementing butterfly systems for him in his closet and around the house. I hope it works! Life would be so much less stressful for this busy bee girl. I've got enough on my plate staying on top of my own plethora of clutter. 😄

    • @PowerToolsWithThread

@@jodibraun6383 For his 'dresser', we are using a nice entertainment center that would normally go in the living room - it pretty much matches the bedroom furniture. It has two doors that close in center in the top and bottom. I put cubes on their sides inside the big open space of the upper portion (designed to hold a 48" TV) and those cubes hold all his underwear, socks, and t-shirts. The bottom shelving holds his shorts and jeans. No drawers! He can see everything and all his clothes are so easy to put away. Then close just two doors and it looks great. If he has to use drawers, he'll pile things on top of a dresser if he changes his mind on what he wants to wear. Never again!

    • @jodibraun6383
      @jodibraun6383 Před rokem

The wall unit idea is a good idea, too. I'm putting together a butterfly style wall unit and an under TV cabinet to help him keep his things under control in the living room. He has all kinds of games, cords, controllers and other game-related things that get spread out all over the place. I've learned that if my organizing systems are too detailed he won't use them. So we share the big wall unit, with a space for him to butterfly, and space for him to butterfly, and space forme to bee. But the TV cabinet is all him, all butterfly.
I'm thinking about making him a storage bed out of Ikea's Kallax cube units for the bedroom. I hope that it might simplify for him both finding his things and putting them away.
      Thanks again!

Okay so I’m a butterfly, and I’m pretty sure my husband is a bee. I drive him absolutely bonkers lol. It’s funny with the cube thing for clothes because a long time ago I added a box to my closet with dividers for socks, underwear, bras, workout clothes, and pajama pants. although it’s still managed to be a bit messy, over almost 4 years the system has actually held up pretty well. I think I might get an actual cube system and do all of my clothes that way. That way I only have to hang stuff that actually needs to be hung.

I am 54 and have been messy/cluttered ALL MY LIFE. For you to explain it so matter of factly like, “Hey, you just are,” brings me to tears. I’ve hired organizers and while they were a help, they never mentioned visual vs. hidden or macro vs. micro. Maybe they didn’t know?
It is so liberating to hear this information. I am currently organizing my kitchen in a way that appeals to me. I have always had trouble putting away groceries. I don’t like hiding food away in the cupboards…after all, they are on display in the grocery store on open shelves. I have a rental, though, so I don’t want to take the doors off. And the cupboards are in weird places, anyway, and in different sizes.
I travel for work, and I’ve stayed at places that have the cupboards crammed with dishes and whatnot. So, I would just put my groceries on the counter, arranged in a neat way. I realized that I absolutely LOVED looking at what food I had. It comforted me. So, I am thinking why not do that at home? Why should food go in the cupboard? There are no organizing police. I can do what I want. So, I’m currently moving all my countertop things, like coffee grinder, toaster, etc. to the cupboards, and I’m taking all my food out of the cupboards and putting them on the counter. The only appliances that will stay out will be the microwave and the electric kettle. Everything else is used infrequently enough that I can put those things away. I think having on display what I REALLY want to display will enable me to put away the other things.
Thank you so much for making me feel like it’s OK to be me. Some of the things you mention I had already figured out, but I didn’t really have the information about why. It was just easier to hang my keys on a hook so I didn’t lose them. In fact, when I travel, I take command hooks with me in case the rental doesn’t have them.
But now that I know I’m a butterfly, it won’t take me years to stumble across things that work for me. I can make a plan.
Oh, and when I was a kid and would be forced to clean my room, I would feel angsty when everything was put away. Now I know why. Oh, and I have literally forgotten to take my medication b/c it wasn’t out in view. So, organizing in a way to works for an individual can make a difference in their health.
Sorry for the long comment, but stumbling across this information has profoundly moved me. It hurts to think you’re broken and wrong for decades and decades. What this information did to my sense of self is incalculable. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I'm primarily a Butterfly, and I remember what an epiphany it was for me when I realized you don't have to use organization objects for their "intended" purposes. I was just walking down the aisle at Walmart thinking about organizing something, when it struck me that a clear-pocket, over-door shoe organizer would be PERFECT for sorting my crafting fabric squares and remnants (which come rolled up into "tubes"). I bought one, and it worked great! I sorted the fabrics by color, which lets me know what I do and don't have at a glance, and looks really pretty, if I do say so myself).
Once that mental barrier was broken, I used those organizers (and the similar ones that come with larger pockets) for just about everything. There is one of these on nearly every one of "my" doors in the house (closet, pantry, bedroom, etc.), and they work perfectly for me. No lids or labels needed - I just toss things into whichever pocket they came from, and I can tell at a glance which pocket that is. Bonus: when the doors are open/closed (depending on the door) the organizer isn't visible, which cuts down on the "visual clutter" aspect.

I am definitely a butterfly. I’ve been a disorganized mess my whole life. I kept trying and failed every time. I need broad categories. Also I need it to be easy to put it away. I really don’t have a place to hang my coat on a hook inside my front door. So I put a hook on the inside of my closet door and I find it easy to hang my coat there. I need a balance of visual and hidden storage. I don’t want everything visual. Of course the other key is to declutter. I have been decluttering but have more to do. I have too much inventory to manage.

I didn't always use to be this way but if it is out of sight I can't remember it anymore. My home is more functional now because I have changed some aspects like including see thru containers. I have also been able to make broader categories because small categories are too hard to keep organized for me now even though I really like them. My suntan lotion, Aloe, calamine lotion, bug spray etc are no longer separate. It is labeled "summer" in one see thru container. Just one example It has been much easier to keep my things organized. For my closet (folding door style not walk in) I use hanging shoe/sweater shelves and then I can fit my nearly entire wardrobe in the closet. That way when I open the doors in the morning, if I’ve managed to put away my clothes, I can see it all. (8 times out of 10 I don’t close the doors but when guests come over it’s easy to hide)

    - Spice Drawer. Spices laid flat in the drawer so no more digging.
    - storing pans in a pan rack. He’ll definitely put them back in random spots but atleast they are in the pan organizer.
    - I label everything. Both of our object permanence just didn’t fully develop at 3 years old I guess, so if we can’t see it it doesn’t exist.
    - There is no hiding his daily use items in drawers. I want my hairbrush and hair ties all hidden but if I do that he’ll ask me where his stuff is. I just have a little basket where he tosses his deodorant, brush, and body spray. Doesn’t mean they stay in the basket though 🙃
    - Little trash cans, everywhere. I have put small trashcans in all the rooms cause I know we will not walk all the way to the kitchen to toss a hershey wrapper at 11pm.
    - For me I have to have a very detailed list when it comes to tidying and organizing. I will go item by item to make sure I didn’t miss anything and to stay on track.

In most camping supply stores like Cabelas or on line (Amazon ) there is something called a female urination device. It’s like a funnel so women/girls can void standing up without making a mess. This is extremely helpful if you’re camping (avoid squatting in poison ivy accidentally in the dark!) or say if you’re having to use a porta potty or other not so clean seat you can stand. Additionally could use with a say a bottle in a car with a towel draped if you don’t have anything else to go in. (Like if you have to stop in traffic or along side the road etc.) It really works and it’s worth it just in case.

This is definitely me. I’ve thought of myself as organized until I’ve seen people who are actually organized 😅 Things tend to collect on the kitchen table or counters and other tables over time, and I’m afraid of losing things I need or use regularly.
I’m definitely neurodivergent and just need to be able to see things clearly without thinking. I’m also Te blind as an INFJ, so I’m exactly like you said with moving on to the next thing without considering what to do with the stuff I’m done with. This video was very insightful for me. I’d really like my new apartment to be more organized, and it’s nice to know I don’t have to force myself to be a different way. It’s nice to work with who you are and go from there 😊

I recently found out at 30 that I've had ADHD this entire time. I was even called a "speedbump" at a work function! I've been trying to "organize" my home for an entire month and I watched almost 20 CZcams videos and I was about to break. I watched 3 of your videos and 5 days later... DONE! One shoe rack is for my shirts & pj's
The other I stuff with my winter gear (hats, gloves, etc) & overflow items I use frequently but have no real home (small jewelry bags, plastic gloves, masks for outside, etc)
The jewelry organizer I use for my small beauty items.
I also have 3 hanging sunglasses organizer I stack on top of each other that I use for my actual jewelry. They're just strips of hooks, so I chuck all my crap at them. Only thing organized is top is chokers, middle short hanging necklaces, and bottom is long hanging necklaces.
Literally has made such an improvement having frequently used items on my walls vs in the closet.

I've spent the last year helping him organize his office before I watched these videos and my office too and organized them both exactly as Crickets do. Makes me feel so much better knowing I don't have to fight another bug.. LOL! EXCEPT that I just had my 16 year old take the test and she is a Butterfly hands down! The whole family has always said she is the messy one. Funny that we actually have her room organized to the Butterfly style without knowing til now. Open closet. Clothes in baskets. Open baskets on shelves and lots of hooks.
I am having to help my mom organize her house which is extremely overwhelming. I watched the Bee video and it is exactly her. Down to the borderline hoarder. I showed her your video and pinterest board for the Bee and she is excited to get started and get rid of stuff now.

I am trying to help my ADHD adult son to organize, as the outside world of papers begin to fly in, and he is glued to the computer. I think the Butterfly system would be best for him, even though he says he desires file folders in the desk drawer, not wanting to even get out of his chair. But the papers only pile up on top of the copier. And I am the one to help find a specific paper. 😝 We will have to assign the desk drawer for the greatest of importance, Social security matters, with a single bin, and the other papers in an open shelf unit with labeled bins that he can just toss into.

Suggestion for anyone who’s a butterfly:
Target sells clear bins with lids in different colors.
I know, I know. No lids.
But I use them for very specific crafts/organizing. When I want that specific thing, I pull the whole bin out, do the thing, and then it’s all there with the bin and the lid to pack it up again. No organization in the bin. Just however it fits.
Then, because I just have a stack of these bins, all with lids on, I can pop it right on top. If I want something under? It’s clear and labeled. So I know exactly what it is. And can pull it out from underneath and use it right away. Then when I’m done, back in the bin and on top of the stack. No muss. No fuss. No thinking about it. No sorting. In the bin, close the bin, top of the stack. Done.

Great video. The only way I've been able to combine my traditional colonial and picture perfect home style, with my butterfly habits, is by having dedicated extra storage rooms for all those shelves and bins: a pantry, walk-in closet, basement, office, laundry room and a sewing area in the extra bedroom, now the Sewing Room with an extra bedroom set. But in every traditional room, for me, what works is having an extra wardrobe or chest with drawers, book shelf, and pegboard. Hooks and pegboards are great near entryways, and although closets are scarce in cape-style homes, that's why piles of clothes tend to work. Every once in a while I hang up the piles of clothes back into the walk- in closet room and my smaller bedroom closet. I keep three: one for clean, one for just worn, and one for coats and sweaters. The laundry room does have a folding counter, but I don't have time to fold, so I made a rule: I only allow hand towels there. Until I provide a better space, that's where they will stay. When I do dishes, I get them done right after use. I made a rule to change my Butterfly habit: I amended my Butterfly behavior because I want the kitchen always looking nice for others. I feel better after watching this video because although my piles get smaller, and are more temporary, they are'nt going away entirely. That's how I stay organized. I put them away more frequently and use them to stay organized. I now know why I have a 'pile' mentality but within reason. I'm an official Butterfly, but I've learned I can be an 'Educated Butterfly'. I don't have to feel bad and try to be someone I'm not. Thanks for validating this category. I only keep now what I use or love to look at in my traditional spaces. I value my storage for my tools, seasonal items, and out of season clothes. Thanks again. I'm a proud, pile-oriented Butterfly.

Having failed to complete my second uni program, single after my first real realtionship and struggling to find a job, alone in a one room apartment. I just could not remember things If I could not see them. I bought a big clear tub and was so happy I could now see the things in them and remember to use them. My mom stopped by and instantly wondered if it shouldn’t be covered with a sheet/blanket or something. Made sense as her style was different and Nowadays open shelves make me feel stressed, overwhelmed.
Now I need things out of sight but easy to see and put away when opening a cabinet etc. I long for always having surfaces always easily cleaned of, ready for visitors.

Now the entire top bunk of her bed houses stuffies and blankets. I wish I could just take the doors off her closet and have open fabric bins for her toys and things, but for now it's a shelf tucked away in there with bins. It (mostly) keeps her room tidy. Well yes in fact. I am apparently a butterfly and in much need of help! Thank you so much for what you do.

Oh my.. I was rofl-ing almost during this whole video (before re-watching it) 🤣Yes, among all the other abuse, I've always been told that I am messy since I can remember. Four decades later I now know that I'm a "butterfly" (possibly with ADD in childhood) and I was forced to follow their conventional organizing style (and education system *d'oh!) .. No wonder I kept failing at everything. To make it more interesting, my husband is ALSO A BUTTERFLY! *lol Our house is ALWAYS looking like a bomb explodes in here everyday.
I'm so relieved (and kinda happy) just knowing that I'm a bit "unique" and that I can build a system unique to us instead of trying to fit into other ppl's idea of organizing. Thank you, Clutterbug!
    🤗🥰

I feel so called out with this right now 😅 my husband always gets so mad because I constantly leave cupboard doors open and as soon as I clean the whole house, it’s messy again. It’s always so hard to keep clutter at bay. I never realized before this why it was, but I’m definitely a butterfly and it effects every single aspect of my life. I’m going to start implementing these cleaning/ organizing tips this year and see how it effects things and if the organization will actually last more than two weeks. Wish me luck!! ❤
Also I’m really glad that kids are natural butterflies too because I can organize my daughters room the same way and it’ll be easy for me to maintain lol

Great video as always. I love sticking around to the end. I have heard of a toilet seat that can fit on top of one of those really large plastic paint buckets you can find at home improvement stores and use for camping. Of course it still will need emptied and cleaned, but at least it is possible to sit to "go". A outdoor sporting store would likely have the seat in their camping department maybe even the bucket too.

We're coming to hurricane season, so I have a Home Depot bucket, trash bags, and kitty litter for multiple cats. I also have that seat and lid for it. Found out it's called a honeypot, go figure 🤭. Save water for things other than flushing the toilet and only need to clean the seat!

Assuming I still have it somewhere, I bought a camping toilet when I lived in a place where 4 people shared 1 bathroom and 1 of them had severe constipation. It was brutal. He'd be in there for over an hour every morning.
I'm pretty sure that non clumping kitty litter was the best of everything I tried. Dirt would be even better, but I was in a downtown area and no dirt.

If you line the bucket with a trash bag, it will be tidier to clean.

Oh my goodness, THANK YOU!!! I have been struggling so hard with trying to get my clutter under control. This makes so much sense to me! I've been trying to force myself to organize like everyone says you're "supposed to". I'm definitely going to try out these tips!

Have you thought about doing ‘deep-dive’ vids, such as Paper Organization for Crickets, Home Office Organization for Bees, Kids Toy Storage for Ladybugs, and Bathroom Organization for Butterflies? I would 💗this! (I’m a Cricket, but I live with a Bee and a Butterfly!) i love everything you do. You are my FAVE organization channel on YT. Keep up the super-duper work!

Wuju!!! I am so excited for this week’s mini series. For sure this will help me understand and discover my organizing style. Definitely I been called messy. And I can remember that feeling of others in the family not understanding. This I know of myself, I need to reduce my inventory because I get overwhelmed. I love simple organization. I love clear containers inside the cabinets. I don’t know if its because of the wood that makes the cabinet dark inside and the clear bins help me see through so it’s easy to find things quickly. Even though I love all tipes of bright colors, for organizing systems I need neutrals like light gray or white if it’s in plain sight. I think this video is very helpful and giving us an example of someone who’s a butterfly 🦋 is a plus.

I am more a Ladybug but now I am doubting if I am not rather a butterfly as this sounds exactly like me, sigh. This made me feel much better and more motivated. I will call myself a Butterbug (better that Ladyfly lol)

Love your story about your daughter! Cracking up! I have an Isabelle too and this sounds like something that would happen to us 😂 She’s also most definitely a butterfly even at almost 4 years old. It’s very obvious. And she loves to sort everything by color.

I am feeling such a sense of joy because I just found out, thanks to you, that I am a butterfly. Up until now my way of keeping my house in a order that works best for me was never addressed! I do need thing out in my visual field but seems like every other organizer tucks everything out of sight and that does not work for me
I appreciate you so much and will be one of your best fans!
