    This is definitely one of the best world cup classics ... Azharuddin's 93 was one of the greatest innings by an Indian in World Cups

    • @user-xy8do2cw7l
      @user-xy8do2cw7l Před 6 měsíci +6

      Azharuddin as I can now see from his clips surely might have been considered an upcoming talent in the 1984-90 period. From when I watched - 1990 - he was my firm favorite by a long way. Very underrated and I would say even discriminated against due to the politics and games played off the field. In this innings he lifted staright back over the bowlers head evey seamer in the then Aus side (and they were early 90s Aus best) for lofted boundaries that fell just short of the ropes. Every seamer McDermott and Hughes and Whitney and Moody. Of the 10 boundaries he hit 4 were such. I was wondering later if just one of them....just one....had gone on to be a six India would have won this match. India lost this match which had huge ramifications both for India and others too. And Azhar even missed out on what would have been the best century of the 1992 WC.

    • @utkarsh80587
      @utkarsh80587 Před 27 dny

      @@user-xy8do2cw7l Azhar was definitely very talented batsman and and the best fielders in the Indian team at that time (before Robin Singh came in). Scored 100s in first 3 tests in England. He along with Tendulkar was the mainstay of Indian batting lineup during the 90s before the likes of Dravid and Ganguly established themselves.
      I disagree with the discriminated against part because he captained India most of the 90s barring a 96-97 season. He played 4 WCs I think. Unfortunately his performance in the 96 and 99 WC (both under his captaincy) was very sub par as a batsman.
      I won’t comment on the match fixing part.

    • @user-xy8do2cw7l
      @user-xy8do2cw7l Před 26 dny

      @@utkarsh80587 may be I was unclear as I did not elaborate. I always thought that he either did not have a hand in the fixing at all or that he was not alone if he did. Yes outside of the fixing part he was never discriminated against. He was made captain when quite young and was reposed faith in a lot and was quite well regarded though underrated as a batsman all the same. Fwiiw When those fixing charges came around he eas dropped like a hot potato and the others who imo were involved scrammed. He was scapegoated rather than discriminated. The real truth of course we will never know.

    • @utkarsh80587
      @utkarsh80587 Před 26 dny

      @@user-xy8do2cw7l I agree that the full truth may never come out. Azhar does have CBI confessions which others do not (atleast in public knowledge). Though he wasn’t the only one who suffered - Ajay Jadeja was in the prime of his career at that time, Nikhil Chopra was an up and coming bowling all rounder who was exonerated but never played again. O do wish there was a more standard way to conduct the investigation - as it’s there in England.

    India were really unlucky in that wc. They lost to eng by 9 runs, lost to aus by 1 run where they were docked 3 overs, lost to sa in the last over courtesy of a hansi cronje six, against sl their match was washed off which ind would have won. Made a decent total against nz but greatbatch played a blinder . Should have been in the semis

    Remember not only India loses the important 2 point of this match but also paved a chance to Pakistan who got benefitted by rain against eng and then the same Australia defeated west Indies in last match and ultimately pak went through to semi nd final and rest is the history.

      In '87, we lost to Australia due to our honesty and sportsmanship: one of the boundaries hit by an Australian batsman was mistakenly signalled 4 but replays showed it was a six. Kapil and the entire team agreed with the umpires straightaway but we made it to the semis anyway.
      In this edition, Shastri, who was notoriously a poor runner between the wickets, played such slow innings that it put pressure on the rest of the line-up. Result: tail-enders had to resort to slogging, in the process losing their wickets. Else, we had won against England and Australia, even against RSA if not for misfields.

    The last ball faced by Srinath is one of my earliest memories as a kid because it caused so many ups and downs. The elation of what looked like the last ball six, followed by the deflation of the fielder coming around under it, and the rekindled hope after the dropped catch but the final realization that the run out meant we lost. RIP to my dad with whom I watched the match and lived those ups and downs.

    One of the two unbelievable glitches from a formidable player like Steve Waugh in his entire career is that last ball catch that he dropped of Srinath, even the throw was wide of the wicket keeper Boon. The other one against Pakistan was his full toss to Asif Mujtaba's last ball six that would tie the match. Jadeja's brilliant catch of Border was akin of Aqib Javed's catch of Graham Gooch in the WC 92 final. Great memories associated with this match, I even mentioned it in one of my stories as well, a quote from the story : "Had Raju successfully scored that 3rd run, he from Raju, would have become Maha-Raju"

I really feel pitty on today's fans. They missed 90's selfless pure cricket, When players used to give 200%. And Mr.Bolbacchan Rashtri 25 of 75. Considering this game and another close one against England at Perth followed by the washout of the easy peasy game against then minnows SL which cost us those 2 valuable points, I believe India did reasonably well

      To be honest and fair it had more to do with the situation of the Indian team then. Who were in this playing 11?
      (1) Kapil Dev. Though his prime was well before my time he was undoubtedly India's greatest cricketer ever, greatest allrounder ever, and greatest fast bowler ever, and among the four great allrounders of the 70s/80s, the cruel fact remains that he was pretty much burnt out by then. (Possibly cricket's cleanest ever ball striker. Though the most underrated batsman imo ever talent-wise as he had his best batting records against the strongest attacks of not just the 70s/80s but ever like WI and Aus. How many know eg that he held ODI cricket's fastest ever 50 record tjat off just 22 balls? *22*. AND that on a typical pre 1990 pitch in early 80s (1983 Indian tour of WI in Berbice) vs *Andy Roberts and Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall and Winston Davis*. That match He ended up with 72 off 38 and Gavaskar made 90 and India beat WI for the first ever time. Then followed the 83 WC and the 85 WSC. When I first started watching from the point I can recall (1990-92) his ODI strike rate was 100! And that dipped to 96 by the time he retired c 1994 when with more batsman-friendly pitches the disappearance of WI and Aus fast bowling conveyor belts and the protective gear and the batsman favoring rules and the fielding restrictions his figures should have improved!) Clearly he stayed on at least two seasons too many by 1992.
      (2) Srikanth. Always heard from my Elders how he was swashbuckling and faced those probably 100 mph speed demons of the late 70s and the 80s fearlessly and with minimal protective gear and on those kinds of pitches. He was a joy to eatch luve for all Indians who watched 70s and 80s cricket. One of a kind by Indian standards. However Should have retired by 1990 with all due respects.
      (3) Shastri. Should also have retired by this 1992 tournament. 25 off 67 says it all.
      3 out of Playing 11 are burnt out and then you have only one good seamer in the often cruelly underrated Srinath and not even one decent spinner (Prabhakar and Raju were the definition of mediocrity). In other words from 90 to 94 we had only Azharuddin and to some extent Jadeja and Manjrekar who were as of then world class. 1996 after the coming in of Dravid Ganguly and later Laxman and Sehwag, and finally Yuvraj, Tendulkar did not seem so outstanding. Not taking anything from him. However Indian cricket in many ways was a mess in the early 90s due to goings-on off the field and the poor management and the politics.

Not taking anything from him. However Indian cricket in many ways was a mess in the early 90s due to goings-on off the field and the poor management and the politics.

    Luck was oscillating here and there on both sides throughout the match. Luck even favoured India on the last ball too (Steve Waugh drop catch), but as a non striker (Raju) should have been much more quicker than striker as 3 runs was definitely possible there , he was a slow athlete which cost India the match.

    RAVI SHASHTRI should get 'BHARAT RATNA' for 25 of 67. I wonder what he was thinking during the innings. In ODI if a batsman get stuck for even 20 balls he realises that he need to change gear and do something different. But after wasting 67 balls RAVI SHASTRI walked off in a manner as nothing happened. Brilliant batting by AZHARUDDIN but he did not get enough support. But it was a close contest. Apart from SACHIN TENDULKAR no batsman performed consistently in 1992 WORLD CUP.

    • @AnkitSingh-xl6pt

      I hate to disagree, but in this WC azhar was India's most prolific batsman with 332 runs and 4 half centuries apart from Kapil accelerating the scoring rates as visible from his innings of 35(in just 26 balls) against pak, 42(in just 29 balls) against RSA and 33(in just 16 balls) against NZL. Even in this match(as well as against England) KD scored at an SR of 100 but unfortunately didn't have the time or the partners to take India to the finish line. Sachin was consistent, but not exactly the best India had for this edition, though he should've been tried as an opener surely.
