    Regarding the question on scissors: Every kind of tool has its own specialized purpose and use. Scissors are best for precision cuts, and for when you’re trying to cut thin and lightweight material that you don’t want shifting around.
    I used to be a gardener/groundskeeper, and I would frequently trim dead portions of leaves off with scissors to keep them looking greener. A knife would tear up the healthy leaf cells.

      It seems like a lot of knife people don't like using scissors out of some weird sense of pride and they are excellent for specific tasks and can be far safer. I love using my knives, but there is a nice feeling when your scissors hit that sweet spot and glide through a sheet of paper.

    I carry Leatherman Raptors everyday. It helps when opening certain things. People are scared of knives but not scared of scissors. So if you whip out a pair of scissors and start going to town on some theft resistant packaging people are a lot less likely to get upset than if you were to go Jedi on the same packaging with a knife.

    From what I understand, SK5 actually falls between 1075 and 1095 with the closest comparison being 1084 carbon, which is a favorite of knife makers because its dependable, easy to heat treat, and easy to machine. I really like how it performs, and I think its super high value in knives like SRK and Ka-bar HD Warthog. it has started sneaking its way into higher priced blades, and I hope that doesn't become a trend.

    Hi David (& Seth),
    My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question:
    I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features:
    1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard")
    2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong)
    3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it...
    4) About 3" or more Blade Length
    5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly.
    6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip
    7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each.
    Thanks so much!

    Back in the 1970's I dropped by Bill Bagwell's shop in Texas. He was building me a bowie. We discussed a possible sheers, scissors, which could be also used as two knives. The idea was great but the design impossible to achieve. But what a great idea. PS, I still have that bowie, and is my one prized possesion. Will pass it on to my son-n-law.

      Seems doable but both knives would have to be chisel-ground like old school Emerson or some of those fancy $$$ chef's knives, if you grind them on both sides the edges won't meet. There an old Soviet bayonet that has a hole near the tip to convert it and it's sheath into a hinging wire cutter type device to cut fences and whatnot too...

      I think most combat knives are primarily functional knives for all kinds of use. With a stabbing point and cross-guard (that is simplified) for additional function in combat.
      Also, a kukri certainly has seen combat use, yet I would not classify it as a combat knife.
      Bowies have seen plenty of combat, but the design is primarily chose for it's utility.
      Tactical knives are less designed with function in mind but looks.

    • @odie2763
      @odie2763 Před 3 lety

      @@etherealicer well a kukri that’s native to its own land isn’t called a “combat knife” it’s just called a kukri and is carried by their respected military as a standard.
      And a Bowie was made for Bowie who kicked ass in the sandbar fight with just a regular large knife. And then went to someone with his own idea to make a fighting knife. So technically a Bowie knife is the first of its kind combat knife created for a specific intention by a specific person at the request of another specific person

    Leatherman raptors will cut pretty much everything, but are expensive and huge even when folded. I recommend some electrician scissors: klein 9 are excellent for edc.

Gerber LMF!). I see tactical more of a support/ancillary tool for first responders & entry teams - not too big, rapid deployment, cut/stab focus (to help entry etc.), used as required. Probably splitting hairs but hey. As for self-defence this is all about rapid deployment and rapid damage. Thanks again DCA.

    Tactical vs Combat, that was a tough one David. Best way to tackle this is by going over the words Combat and Tactical. Combat is a fight between two parties, where as, tactical comes from tactic which means ordered or arranged. A combat knife is one preferably/exclusively used to fight. Therefore, concealment may not be necessary, hence a straight knife, and both grip and length need to accommodate different environmental elements while giving the user a distance from the opposing party. On the other hand, tactical is a knife used to meet a specific or arranged function. In conclusion, a combat knife may fall under the tactical category but normally tactical refers to a knife any other than a combat knife.
    From a humble admirer of your reviews. 🤗🙌🏼✊🏼

      You're triggering my inner knife-nerd lol. Combat doesn't mean 2 people, if you're in a 1000 person battle, you're in combat and a battlefield is a combat zone. 'Tactical' could mean anything but in knives, it means weapon. Like a dagger is a tactical knife but not a combat knife because it's just designed for violence as opposed to a combat knife like the Ka-Bar, which is both a weapon and a general cutting tool.
      Like he said, a combat knife is a tactical knife but a tactical knife may or may not be a combat knife.
      Then there's the even more confusing sub-category of tactical knives called a 'fighting knife' or 'fighter' which to my understanding should ideally be lightweight and have it's 'balance' or heaviest point somewhere towards the rear or handle so that the blade moves quickly in a fight (because your hand is it's center of gravity so it's almost effortless to lash out with it) but there's a lot of disagreement on that, many knives call themselves that without having those features.

      @@johnnyshanksalot8358 You’re triggering my inner word-nerd. While combat may not necessarily be limited to TWO individuals, the word is still referring to conflict which involves the use of violent force between people or persons. Also, there’s defensive combat and there’s violent combat. When you take away someone’s freedom you are being violent towards them and they now have the right to defend themselves. Nothing is designed for violence while many things could be used for such evil acts. Lastly and to be clear, comment was made to enhance the programming and I’m glad it’s peaked your inner knife-nerd. 🤗

    • @johnnyshanksalot8358
      @johnnyshanksalot8358 Před 3 lety

      @@freddierodriguez3036 The meaning of words differs depending on their context, a combat engineer for instance, doesn't mean someone who draws blueprints only while actively fighting ninjas lol, they largely make and design bridges so that soldiers can cross rivers or engineer the controlled demolition of obstacles and other stuff along those lines. A combat medic is another example that lines up with 'combat knife', they have the capability to fight but in theory their job is mostly to be a battlefield doctor not to throw medical supplies and syringes at the enemy :P
      Violence doesn't mean bad, it can be justifiable violence like self defense or unjustifiable violence like attacking an innocent person. Is English a 2nd language here? I don't get it.
      A dagger is not a tool, it's a weapon. Could you open your mail with it? Sure but that's not what it's designed for, it's designed to stab and always has been since the bronze age. There are no 'utility' daggers, that's not a thing. There are letter openers that look like daggers and usually aren't even made of steel but those are novelty items, you don't need a 'tool' to open mail, they're for fun.

      @freddierodriguez3036 Před 3 lety

      @@johnnyshanksalot8358 these messages are too long. I’ll only address the first part. A combat engineer is an engineer whose primary task is to support those who are or will be in combat. Much like a combat knife designer refers to a designer who designs knives to be used in combat. This person must put him/her self in a situation of combat to think of ways the knife will give its user an edge (punt intended) over their opponents.
      And lastly, just because it’s very important to address, violence is to cause harm or take by force from another person against their will. For example, boxers in match are not being violent against each other because their choose to do so. And ok, lastly I’ll address the dagger. A dagger while designed to be used to inflict bodily harm or physical damage can also be used as a piece of art. All of this said, who decides if a knife is a tool or a weapon is it’s handler not us.

    Hey DCA, quick question that I can't find a solid answer for: Are you suppose to oil a knife that's coated?
    & also: would you recommend carrying regular corrosive-possible steels in a very hot & humid, sometimes-wet work environment with the proper care? Would it be enough & what is the best oil for that type of environment?
    I want to rotate through all the knives I have that I love but with those conditions I usually carry H1 Spyderco knives that I don't too much fancy.

      I'm the budget guy the oil I use is 3 in 1 oil just the generic stuff if your going to get you knife wet coat the exposed edge a day before your trip. Clean before you go with a dry cloth. I've had no problems so far. Keep in mind if your cutting food don't use 3in1.

      Well, thank you for the tip. I recently got a CRKT Siwi & they oiled it with something that has stuck on it through the weather (not that it's gotten very wet.) Currently, I'm using tsubaki oil & haven't had any issues but it's hard to tell when I need to re-oil my knives because I can't see when it's uncoated in oil (because I wipe the excess.) Liked what they put on the Siwi but I suspect it's not food safe either.

      I've had great success using liquid coconut oil. (It doesn't go solid like normal coconut oil). Yes, wipe it on coated and non-coated blades. Just a couple drops , wipe on / wipe off , leaves a very fine film virtually unnoticeable but protective. Food safe, and makes the blade slide in/out from sheaf nice and smooth. Wipe it on your sharpening steel, perfect. And a big thing for me on blade care, is store the knife out of the sheaf when not in use. And make sure the sheaf drys out . Pro-tip ; if you need to remove "rust peppering" from a nice blade, make a paste using Bi-carb Soda and the liquid coconut oil. Use a dry soft cotton cloth with the paste to clean and polish the blade. (Good for cleaning / polishing cooking pots aswell).

    I am getting into knives and the first high end knife that I bought is the Spyderco Advocate with the M4 blade, which is not so good vs corrosion, I always put WD-40 to prevent corrosion but it stills rust a little bit, so I have 2 questions.

    Hello Mr. Andersen, I am going to buy my boy a pocket knife, but I am struggling to find the perfect knife - I want it to be tough, but lightweight, not too big, but big enough to get things done and I would like some color to the handle so it is easier to detect when left on the ground (we already lost one), I want it to be lockable, but easy to open and close, but still not prone to open by accident in the pocket. I like the Cold Steel Tuff Lite, but I read the locking button is kind of hard to press and that will probably be an issue. Would be happy to get some inspiration

    Alright, I am going to ask something here... As to the first question in this video. Does anyone else just get tired of lending out a pocket knife? I just say no now. Someone asks if they can borrow my knife and I flat out say NO now. I got tired of people relying on me to carry a knife for them. Or having to carry a second knife on me just to lend people. Grown men that need a knife daily should carry their own. Not rely on mine. Same goes for flashlights too. They always want to use someone else's batteries. Which is why I had to go rechargeable. I don't let people "borrow" my stuff anymore. Don't get me wrong if they need something cut I might go over and cut it for them, if it is not a daily thing.
