I had the privilege of hearing Lucas & Arthur Jussen perform Sacre du Printemps live last night at the Klavierfestival Ruhr in Mühlheim an der Ruhr. They played on two pianos this time, and it was an unforgettable musical experience! I've conducted Sacre many times in Berlin and Düsseldorf, and I almost prefer the clarity of the version for two pianos, especially when played so brilliantly by these to exceptional artists. They played from memory, which is a super-human feat in itself. Their unbelievable energy, clarity and stunning technical virtuosity is absolutely amazing, in the real sense of the word. Thank you Lucas and Arthur for this truly unforgettable concert!

An excellent recording of a spectacular piece, by two unbelievable talents. Imagine that this 4-hand arrangement was first performed by Stravinsky himself, with the other two hands supplied by none other than Claude Debussy, in 1912. Still, I refuse to think that they could have done any better than the Jussen brothers.

First of all a phenomenal feat of memory!! Almost none of this music lies comfortably beneath the fingers. Also a gripping performance. these two swept me along from the very first note. The variety of touch, the energy, the precision, the rhythmic incisiveness, all came together so convincingly. For me, this performance rates among the top few of the decade. Up there with Yuja Wang's Prokoviev Toccata and Malofeev's Rachmaninov concerti.. One stands in awe of such brilliance.

@@organboi Well, strictly speaking (at least for classical performers and the like), the word/expression generally used would be, as you rightly say, "by memory" or "memorized." However, in a casual setting much like this comments section, saying something was played "by heart" (colloquially speaking) can be a perfectly acceptable alternative here as well. Bear in mind, not everyone here is necessarily a classical performer/musician, etc. So, their choice of words may reflect a perspective different from yours or mine. Just food for thought! 😊

Que dire de plus ? Rien ! Quel enchantement !

This is an insane feat on all accounts (playing one of the most virtuosic orchestral pieces on a piano), but the fact that they memorized this entire thing is truly mind blowing. This is famously one of the most difficult pieces (it's a real challenge for almost every conductor), and these two youngsters play the entire thing solo on piano, FROM MEMORY.
I wouldn't be surprised either if they could switch and have Arthur play Lucas' part, and vice versa.

Some do not care for this modern interpretation of classical music. Stravinsky, Milhaud and Jones were very good friends and their music mirror this concept of the joyous and sometimes dark expressionistic forms. It is art. Like Picasso is definitely art expressed as the creator sees. Lucas and Arthur are artists and have a natural infinity in expressed what they see and hear. Bravo to them!

Superhuman... look at the various rhythms across the hands just at 32:09 alone! I've known this piece my whole life, and I just can't comprehend how they have achieved this.

I didn't think this would work. Rite of Spring only for piano 4 hands? Well it does. At least the way they play it. Quite wonderful! Exciting.
