FIDEL CASTRO's CUBA and Cuba in general has been a total failure and disaster since 1959. They graduated thousands of doctors as a propaganda tool to show the world that COMMUNISM works. How did they do that? They did that because the USSR gave Cuba ONE BILLION dollars a year - free money - since 1959 to the 1990's when the Soviet Union collapsed and they pulled the rug from under their feet. Was it truly a feat that CASTRO did this? No, it wasn't. The price the CUBAN people paid was high. They graudated a lot of doctors from garages who are poorly trained. A Cuban doctor who emigrates to South America, Europe or the United States must undergo further education in order to pass standardized tests because they are not equipped. But even if it were true, the cost to the economy has been devastating. There are food shortages, no electricity, few automobiles, lack of soap, water, hygiene. CUBA is not a country to emulate. It is a national disaster. Not to mention its track record in HUMAN RIGHTS. 95% of Cubans hate their government. Those who have any kind of respect for the CASTRO's is because they are bleeding the country dry. The average person makes under $50 per month. Cubans spend their whole day figuring out how much food to put on their table. CUBAN COMMUNISM has been a complete failure. The population of CUBA is 12,000,000. 3,000,000 CUBANS live outside Cuba, mostly in the USA but also in Europe, Central and South America and now they are starting to emigrate to Russia. Cuba has many trained medical workers because healthcare was a prime concern to former Presidents Fidel and Raúl Castro and their Health Minister who himself was a doctor Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Both the Castro brothers and Che Guevara saw the need to maintain a strong and independent system of healthcare and one that could truly tend to the needs to the Cuban people. In my view doctors are truly one of the most important figures in modern society and with the current pandemic we are seeing just how vital medical workers to functioning society.

Much of what they learn is basic and many although called “doctors” are actually trained to be nurses. The doctors working abroad program has been so financially successful for Cuba that on my last trip to Cuba prior to the coronavirus pandemic people were complaining about the lack of doctors in Cuba, people were saying all the doctors were sent overseas. Additionally, the lack of medicine in Cuba is astounding. People ask for everything from aspirin to antibiotics, these are not available on the island.

Those are minor drugs with little value. Even in western countries, most women over 80 years old still know what herbs or other plants to use instead, but this knowledge has sadly been lost to the fight of big pharma. Ginger root affects you the same way aspirin does, and garlic consumed raw is antibacterial. Why would a socialist nation, who cannot profit of the sales of aspirin or antibiotics, invest in them when there are much cheaper alternatives which have the same effect? Ofc you can produce aspirin or antibiotics if there is a person willing to pay the price, but to anyone who possesses this knowledge it would be ridiculous to pay so much for those „medicines“ when the natural alternatives can literally grow in your garden for free.

Cuba is in shambles. Cuba cannot represent the world or brag to the world about anything.

the cuban government is, in praxi, acting like human traffickers. they are not free. their work is exploited by the cuban government, and many try to claim asilum in the country they are sent to. those are not humanitary missions. The governments pay for them, but dont pay to the doctors, they pay to the cuban government that gets a fee (usually the bulk of the payement).
every socialist should be agains this practise, because there is an institution exploiting the workers.

      499. Memorandum From the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs (Mallory) to the Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs (Rubottom)1
      Washington, April 6, 1960.
      SUBJECT
The Decline and Fall of Castro
Salient considerations respecting the life of the present Government of Cuba are:
      1.
The majority of Cubans support Castro (the lowest estimate I have seen is 50 percent).
      2.
There is no effective political opposition.
      3.
Fidel Castro and other members of the Cuban Government espouse or condone communist influence.
      4.
Communist influence is pervading the Government and the body politic at an amazingly fast rate.
      5.
Militant opposition to Castro from without Cuba would only serve his and the communist cause.
      6.
The only foreseeable means of alienating internal support is through disenchantment and disaffection based on economic dissatisfaction and hardship.
If the above are accepted or cannot be successfully countered, it follows that every possible means should be undertaken promptly to weaken the economic life of Cuba. If such a policy is adopted, it should be the result of a positive decision which would call forth a line of action which, while as adroit and inconspicuous as possible, makes the greatest inroads in denying money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government.

Funny how the US suddenly doesn't have a problem with immigration exclusively when it suits them politically. With the medical missions it's important to remember that they're there to help the country stay afloat. If Cuba crashes economically, it may not be able to train as many doctors, and thus also wouldn't be able to send them on missions. It's quite ironic the US accuses them of greed when it takes oil by force, without regard for what happens to civilians in the process, and then doesn't even care about its own citizens' wellbeing

Salary inequality in Cuba is very real if you understand it's society. And not just doctors, taxi drivers and restaurant owners in Cuba earns more than a mechanic, nurse, doctors, and a VP of a state-owned companies that doesn't work in tourism and mining industry only because their salary is from tourists that usually paid them with USD or CUP but with the price for their services determined by themselves unlike others who are determined by the government

Cuba is in shambles. Cuba cannot represent the world or brag to the world about anything.

Always so much bitter hatred towards the USA. You should go live in RUSSIA, NORTH KOREA or CHINA and see how you fare. The funny thing is that millions are trying to immigrate to the USA but 800,000 Russians move out of Russia every year. I live in Saudi Arabia for a year and in spite of the fabulous money I was making, I had to leave because it is a f*****g HELLHOLE. So yes... its not volunteering. the Brazilian government pays to a state owned cuban company that sends the doctors. they cant aply for brazilian citizenship of residence status, so in the end they are forced to return to cuba. some of them escape by the florests to the closest embassy to claim assylum.
they arent volunteers. this is human trafficking that is legal because that company is part of the cuban state, so it can be considered a government agency.

Because in such a system, the poor pay very little tax, and the well to do pay higher taxes, and the very rich pay a lot. So that means that more services, educations and so on are available to more people, and that no smart kid gets locked out of med school because he can't afford to study.
