Leatherman Super Surge Part 7 : Adding A Package Opener

  • I have always wanted a package opener from the Wingman/Rev on the Leatherman Surge. Unfortunately, it is not a direct fit. I decided to modify one to fit the T-shank adapter of the Surge. In the end, it worked out pretty well.

Love the opener. Crazy to think that Leatherman doesn’t offer customer mods from the factory. Every person doesn’t need every tool. To be able to mix and match tools from different models would be a game changer. Seems like a really lucrative direction to go. Even to offer only limited mods so not to impose on other models would be fine too.

That package opener is the best I have seen and, in my opinion, should be up front with the main deployment tools, possibly displacing the can opener. Today, we open more boxes and packages than we do can's of food/oil.

I was thinking that the blade exchanger could be used to accept special scraper bits. I was thinking about reprofiling an old jigsaw blade for this purpose. The bimetal steel would allow you to do a little prying without worrying about snapping.

Well I was going to say that I know the perfect ratchet. It's a part of my EDC Ben. Been carrying this Husky model for over 20 years in my pocket. Perhaps you can find old stock. Here is the online info I was able to track down on it. Very affordable. Glad I bought a spare. Sorry I didn't buy a few extra. They always discontinue my favorite tools.
In all of my searching. I have never found a smaller, more fine tooth ratchet made by any other manufacturer. There is a slightly more robust Gear Wrench ratchet of the same design. It is definitely bigger but should work just as well if not better. I would imagine that you can find it online still. Lowes stopped carrying the Gear Wrench micro ratchet.
Finally I own a Kobalt micro ratchet set. It's cheap and pretty much as capable as the other two but it doesn't have knurled thumb drive crowns to aid in operating the ratchet. Making it the least favorite of the 3 I own. You should also be able to find it at Lowes or online. I saw a set recently in store.

To take apart a Rebar or Supertool 300. If you have Two Skeletools. The teeth on those plier heads mesh perfectly with the teeth of the special fasteners. You only need to be careful of scratching the finish while loosening or tightening. I had great results tightening my Super Tool 300 this way.

I'll bet lots of people have ended up in emergency rooms after having cut themselves trying to open up those blister packs, not to mention damaging the item contained within. That package cutter tool, you modified is a great tool for (almost) totally eliminating either of those possibilities ( I did get holding hand a bit one time with the package opener, but it was nothing compared to what a sharp 3 or 4 inch blade would've done). Great job on the fine grinding and filing work, Ben. That came out excellent.

I love your build so far and I'm thinking of doing something like this but loaded for what I need. The idea I am having is about the thank. I really think that might be the key if you want to expand the surge. The downside would be carrying all the extra bits. Some of us are used to having alot in our sheaths already so for some it might not be so bad. What do you think about putting tshanks on more tools for ease of loading?

The same as If you would have to change the saw to a file and thus have to both carry the file and spend time changing it.
