    7:38 to prevent the lip breaking and to make it easier to fit the replacements , there are 2 further torx screws on the lower face (behind where the mirror glass would be fitted) that loosen the lower half of the mirror casing. Makes fitting just that wee bit easier

    I also found myself replacing the indicator after an argument with a garage door frame. Unfortunately the lower piece that the indicator screws into has been damaged. Although I can get a cheap part I've got no idea how to fit it. As mentioned this is the lower section where the puddle light fits in to (Golf 7)

      Are they approved for use in the EU?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 lety

      I don't think that's all that likely considering how much manufacturing there is in China. The big issue is the test and certification process, without that I'm afraid any lighting product is not legal for use in the EU.

    • @garymathe9863

      I shelled out $1100 for the Osram headlights because they are amazing and nothing comes close BUT $250 for mirror indicators is a bit much, so I went with a $20 from China. We'll see if it lasts a few years.

      I think the safety thing is a fact, look at the footage of the originals and the DMIs? The originals are so dull it's unbelievable. Also when you unlock you can see them work with the rears (on 7.5) so that's cool

    • @DAZZER435

    • @michael6125
      @michael6125 Před 2 lety

      @@DAZZER435 I don’t think cost is his main concern, it’s the legality of use in EU. Yes we can all get cheaper products and I believe someone of his knowledge will know that but the thought of OEM (or better), legal and quality parts outweighs the thought of cheap materials

  • @scunnerdarkly4929
    @scunnerdarkly4929 Před 3 lety +4

    I like Osram, the LEDriving SL retrofit bulbs are excellent. You’d have to be nuts to pay so much for a set of these though, you could buy 5-6 sets of Chinese dynamic indicators from the usual online sellers for the same price, fit and finish. And, as much as I like a quality product from an established brand, the Chinese set I currently have fitted work perfectly and in this case it’s hard for Osram to justify their pricing *for a pair of indicators* - £150+ vs £30.

      I have the Chinese on my TCR there are great.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 lety

      For me it's a case of do it the proper way or not at all. By proper I mean a product that's guaranteed for use in the EU with all the correct paperwork. Automotive lighting is highly regulated and the certification process is bound to be expensive but without it could your insurer reject a claim? Not really worth the risk for me anyway. Likewise with warranty, my cars got nearly 2 years left so I wouldn't want to jeopardise that. Plus I wouldn't want to have do the job more than once. Not sure the mirror clips are happy going on and off a number of times and if you need to replace the mirror caps because without good clips they are useless the Chinese ones won't seem cheap any longer. You pays your money and takes your choice but I couldn't make a video endorsing the installation of items that are not approved for use in Europe.

    • @scunnerdarkly4929
      @scunnerdarkly4929 Před 3 lety +2

      @@volkswizard I largely agree with the sentiment and I’ll buy genuine VW parts in preference to cheap (and demonstrably inferior) alternatives, but I don’t see an issue with what is essentially a cosmetic component that is physically and functionally identical in a non-critical application - and given mine are e-marked the only factor left to consider is price. If buying expensive cosmetic parts gives people the warm fuzzies then good for them, but “doing a proper job” doesn’t necessarily mean buying a premium item where a cheaper - and to all intents identical - alternative would offer the same utility with no detriment to performance, durability or safety.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 lety +6

      Are they legal for EU use though? Getting things approved costs a lot of money and I very much doubt a £30 set will have had this done whatever the seller says. Without approval you run the risk of having your insurance invalidated in the event of an accident and in some countries your car confiscated. Automotive lighting is a very heavily regulated area and not something I'd personally want to take chances with.

    • @DrFod
      @DrFod Před 3 lety +4

      @@volkswizard Unlike headlights I don't think there's much regulations for indicators other than position, frequency and colour, and I don't think insurance could deny a payout unless you failed to declare the mod or they were the actual cause of an accident which is very unlikely. The Osrams do look good though and seem to sweep more smoothly than cheaper ones. I still think it's just a question of whether the extra quality is worth so much more money.

    The nice thing about the OSRAM ones is that OSRAM makes the OEM lights for VW so the "sweep" of the mirror turn signals exactly matches the timing of the rear and front (if equipped) dynamic turn signals.

    Looks good. I bet the air was blue trying to clip on the outer case! 🤪

      Yes it was! The trick is to line up inner edge and push mirror out then forwards. If you don't do this the inner clip won't align and will deform when pushed forwards.

    Does this work on a normal mk 7.5 golf?

    What wheels do you run Sir?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před 3 lety +1

      OZ Omnias 8x18 in matte black with 235 40 18 Goodyear F1. All you need is an 8" wheel but VW find it hard to sell that as an option so sell you 19s and a rough ride to get an 8" wheel. Also they are around £200 per wheel so cheap to replace, unlike Pretorias which are around £1000 and prone to buckling.

    The mirror design is bad, especially when it folds up it make the car look horriable,the bmw mirrors when they fold up it looks nice.
