I agree with nearly everything Laura said about this plant except for it serving as a good screen.
It's deciduous and is the last among most plants to break dormancy so you'd only have that screen for several weeks out of the year but I bet it would look outstanding flanking medium-sized crape myrtles.
Laura should try to see if a crape myrtle would survive in her garden with her recent upgrade. The ones by me are still in bloom and started in mid-July! Eight weeks of blooms!

It's deciduous which makes it a poor choice for a screening plant. And it's also (as Laura said) one of the last plants to break dormancy.
Choose something else as a screen; something evergreen (arbs, holly, etc.).

I love this plant, don't get me wrong, but I definitely wouldn't plant it along a driveway, sidewalk or any walkway.
The blooms only last a day and then they litter the ground around them and if you have a lot of rain like me, the spent blooms are slippery on walking surfaces.

I call my property the "Flower Jungle," because it's a little wild down in here, as are we! Nothing too tailored or controlled going on. That's great advice though for more formal settings. Funny story I hope you see...I started watching you after finding your vlogs randomly. I kept talking to my husband about new gardening ideas and he asked who I was getting it from and I said "my friend Laura." haha! I continue on and showed him some of the videos. I would talk to him about winter interest and he started calling you "the winter interest lady." So now if I tell him something new I learned or something I want to try after seeing your video I can't just call you Laura, I have to add "you know the winter interest lady!" and he'll know who I'm talking about. It's so funny for us and has now become our thing when we talk about our garden/flower bed.

We planted a white pillar in early May from gallon pot against a fence to add privacy screen with my neighbor. Since we live in a townhouse with small garden, this is going to be perfect. The shrub has already grown a couple of feet and has been blooming all summer. Next year I expect it to peak over the fence we share with neighbor. I have paired this one with the Sugar Tip Rose of Sharon on adjoining back fence which is also columnar and has gotten very tall. Along the remaining back fence of my yard are two more Rose of Sharons, a white Diana and a pink one with dark center. I pruned the pink one's lower branches when it was new to take more of a tree form; and it now arches to provide shade over our garden benches. I love the way these plants have softened all the neighboring hardscape and provide privacy and color for a long season.

Love all forms of Rose of Sharon!! I love the white, ....we have a pink one, double althea, smack dab in front of our house, it was here when we moved in. August 2017. I thought it was just a tree of some sort, no buds, blooms only leaves. The following fall, we had a few blooms and hummingbird feeding from it. 3 of 5 branches were dead, so I began removing the 'dead'. 2 of them were, but the 3rd stalk very much still alive. This yr literally one limb full of buds and blooms and the other bare stalk, but it was still alive. Ugghhh... I love them and hope next yr I can somehow help it thrive. This is beautiful fence line Laura and Aaron. ...Thank you for sharing.

Many of the newer varieties are more sterile but I have a hedge of them in all colors that I grew literally from twigs that self seeded in other parts of my yard.

I love Rose of Sharon - we have always had one in our yards throughout the years. All purple blooms very similar to the one you shared but I planted it 15 years ago so I’m sure not the same variety.

I don't agree. And I don't know if that Laura's recommendation or Proven Winners but that's a deciduous shrub that breaks dormancy late, all of which, IMO, make it a poor choice for a privacy screen.

So good to see you planting that there. You have the perfect eye for contrasting plants in your garden. It’s beautiful. How would I change my Rose of Sharon to a standard? I have several and am wanting to change one. Is this done from the baby stage, or could I do it to a 3 year old plant that is planted in a pot? I cannot find a standard in my area and I think your is just beautiful. Mine is about 3 ft tall. Thanks for the help and God bless. 👏🏻💕👏🏻

Two questions: how much privacy do the RoS branches provide when not in leaf? Also, how big does the standard form RoS get? Thanks for all your great advice and info!

During winter months and early spring, we are looking at sticks. So no privacy, but if your eyes focus on the foreground instead of neighbor/background.

How do you deal with the dead flowers of Rose of Sharons? They seem to be sludgy and stick to lower growing plants around the shrub. Since they bloom so profusely it made our groundcover look bad. The structure of this variety is so unique! Can't wait to see it mature.

Hey Laura! I'm doing a project in school and I thought I would ask the gardening expert some of my questions!
What do you love about the garden? What do you hate about it? Why do you do it? What little things are harder than it should be in the garden? What are threats to your garden?
Thanks! I hope you have a good day :)
