Ted isn’t just a great luthier/craftsman. He’s an exceptional educator and raconteur.
As a completely amateur "luthier" I am indebted to Ted for his calm, wise approach. He makes me want to try stuff for myself.
I am in the same club, I have felt the fear squeeze out of me in recent months... I have 2 projects going right now because of the direction I get from Ted.
If it wasn't for his channel, I never would have continued playing. My first guitar was a crappy strat knockoff that was totally F'ed up and unplayable until I watched some of Ted's videos and learned how to redress the frets and do a proper set-up. Ended up making a $100 guitar play really nicely. That was about a year ago and I've since bought a much nicer guitar that I'm absolutely in love with but I still have that strat clone because I'm proud of my work on it.
I concur with both of you. Ted has been the major source of information and inspiration as I fumble my way through the process of a restoring an old Eko Ranger VI acoustic for my father-in-law. I can’t imagine a finer source of expertise.
If you haven't built an acoustic guitar from scratch then you aren't a Luthier. You're an amateur repairman.
The relaxed "come along on this repair with me", story telling, dry humor and quality information is what makes Ted's content so compelling..
I first found out about Ted Woodford when i came across a Headstock repair video he did on a old Les Paul.
A true craftsman that has me still in amazement at how incredible his work is!
Ted's channel is awesome - love watching him work!
Ted is an excellent teacher, and I never, ever miss one of his posts.
I hope to see Ted on PBS one day! I think He could keep an audience captive, and teach us all something. He's a Rockstar in My Book. He should be a Household Name throughout the World.
Ted mentioned this interview on his ES335 set up video and here I am. Love Ted’s videos.
Me too!!
I watch Ted for a couple reasons. The first reason, is to watch him repair something that one wouldn't think could be repaired, and just see the excellent work ethic he puts into each job, and results.
The second reason is to get ideas. I own a good number of guitars. I'm retired, and have found I love working on them. Watching Ted is a great guage for me. If I feel I have the skill, and viable resources to do a job after watching Ted, then I'll do it. His work ethic, and results tell me "yes" or "no". Meaning, I have a set of skills, but if I feel I cannot achieve similar results, with those skills, to what Ted got, then I will not attempt it. There have been plenty of things I've done because of watching him, and plenty I have not.
Ted stands out as the very best luthier on the internet. Ted is high quality content from a high quality person. There are so many crappy luthier channels out there. Some have good quality videos full of terrible advice. Some have great content but not-so-great videography and delivery. Some have quality advice and quality video but they just want to drive you to their more expensive paid service. Ted stands alone as the best.
What Matt said!
couldnt agree more, Matt . . you just will not see this stuff anywhere else, and not in the way Ted teaches it.
There are also a load of crappy looths that aren't on the Internet in this world. Ted is one of the best I have seen.
I don’t even play or own a guitar but TWoodford is in my top 5 favorite things to watch on CZcams. His approach is extremely calming and his way of talking you through what he’s actually doing is comforting and it makes me feel like I’m learning something even though I’ll never apply that knowledge to any of my hobbies. Maybe a few things but not many. Ted is awesome and I love his content.
I didn't either when I first started watching Ted's channel lol. Within 6 months of getting hooked on guitar channels, I had purchased my first guitar. Having always been inspired by Duane Allmans music, I finally decided to learn to play and bought a guitar in December of 2019. Specifically because of 1 certain song he plays lead guitar on called 'Loan Me a Dime' by Boz Scaggs. That sing really inspired me to learn to play.
I also share middle names with Howard Duane Allman thanks to my Dad, his biggest fan. It's been a fact I've known for as long as I can remember.
@@JC-11111 that’s awesome man. I’ve owned guitars in the past but never really learned to play. I could play Slash’s exercises from “sweet child of mine” and a few riffs from other songs but it was always something I’d do when drinking and that made it hard to progress at it. Now that I don’t drink I have too many hobbies to try and find time to play. Maybe someday I will.
30:03 Ted says, "maybe I'm a bit misanthropic." I don't think he's ever seen Dave's World of Fun Stuff videos. Now there's a misanthrope! ;-) I actually love them both!!
Ted’s luthier channel is by far the best I’ve been watching via CZcams, great stuff.
I did my first neck reset with little experience by following his repairs and builds. It was an old plywood guitar from the 60's, did bridgework, fretwork. Dialed in the action and intonation with information and references from this man. I am very grateful for this channel. That is an understatement. I didnt know i would love this kind of work this much.
I may have commented when this first came out that you guys are total wizards but having just watched the entire video I must say that we 50 year old self taught luthiers with amaryllis plants in our windows all ROCK! lol
Ted oozes integrity.....respect
I will always click "like" when Ted is in the house!! Thank you, Ian!! So glad I tuned in!!
Ted is the only channel where I watch every Video start to finish.
👍👍😎✌️🤟⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So, great to finally meet you Ted. Wayne, in KY. Just a great admirer of your great talent.
Ted's a great dude. So humble and I really respect his philosophy of not treating any guitar as disposable. We live in a world of finite resources so everyone who fixes things like Ted is doing good for the world.
love Ted's channel, fantastic range of instruments and brilliant delivery. thanks Ted
Love his channel and content. He has a great voice and is very knowledgable.
It must be said that Ted is a natural, and I think that comes from his love of reading and his deep ironic sense of humor. The most classic episode was when he riffed about a Vietnam Vet "that saw things". The deep tech tools do not matter. Ted has a sense of a performer, deep book reader, teacher, guitarist, craftsman, and all with a dry sense of humor. Ted, you are awesome, man.
Watching Ted I've definitely grew the courage to rebuild and work on my first bass and now more in the future.
Thanks Ted
Ted is a fine craftsman. Love his videos. I wish he was closer. I have work for him.
I adore Ted's channel. He's a master craftsman with many disciplines.
Love Ted, been a fan of his videos for about 6 years.
Holy crap! Ted has only been in full business for 7 years? Amazing. So glad he shares.
I don’t fix guitars, and I barely play them (I’m a drummer), but damn, I do like to watch Ted.
Here is one viewer that does not play guitar or fixes guitars but as a boatbuilder I can truly appreciate Ted's craftsmanship and I love to hear him talk.
I had the pleasure of having Ted fix my old Guild and now it's a joy to play! We are so fortunate to have honest artisans available!
I love, love, love Ted's channel and been watching him since really close to the beginning. I worked on a guitars for a bit as an amateur, but I just love watch Ted's videos and hearing his voice. He's unique and he has no big ego at all. He's the kind of guy you could just sit and chat with. Ted is down to earth and super likeable.
Ted’s video’s are informative, relaxing and laced with a fine sense of humour. My only issue is that he’s too far away to work on my Garrison ;)
FWIW, back in the 60's what I personally saw were people from fine furniture branching out. Some had apprenticed back in the old country. One of the things I like about Ted's videos is the cross over from stuff I do that he does to new things that I can try on what I make (not instruments). I don't think he gives himself enough credit for instructional value.
Ted is probably therapy for way more people than will even admit it. He has a very soothing demeanor and easy way of communicating that hits home to a lot of people
I am always super psyched when Ted uploads a new video. He never disappoints.
Ted told me about this channel. So I subbed. Ted will always be my favorite luthier though.
I've learned so much from watching Ted. I've patched up several instruments and antiques based on his guidance, be it setup or finish touch-up. Between what I picked up from tinkering all my life and what he shows, I'm no longer afraid of 'uncertain projects'.
Ted is a top chap. Can't wait for the next video!
Oh wow. Ted just mentioned his mom had dementia and taking care of her. My father had dementia and took care of him for years - through his decline. I lost my dad on Feb 24th of this year to dementia.
I love Ted's CZcams videos. He's relaxing to listen to, knowledgeable and I like his attention to detail ( he sometimes goes to extremes), He's very popular on my guitar forum TDPRI and a lot of people watch his work. He's also extremely honest about what time and cost is worth it on an instrument. I make guitars ( both electric and acoustic so good luck with the stewmac kit acoustic- made on back in 2004).
it is a privilege to know such a sensitive craftsman through youtube. ted is inspiring, and i will try to bring the work ethic he demonstrates into my own life. thanks ted, and thanks ian!
Ted is a legend , educational, knowledgeable , entertaining, his channel is a real pleasure and I'm not a luthier, I just love watching gifted craftsmanship and he has that is spades.
Ted is the COOLEST ! I sent him a few emails concerning my 1978 Fender Mustang and he
wrote me back promptly !
I started doing little repair jobs on my fleet of guitars that I would have never attempted had
I not seen his videos !
I hard tailed my Mustang which came out awesome, by making that change it totally gave the guitar sustain that was never there before !
I also did a neck reset on my sons Taylor Big Baby ( Asian made !) The guitar was unplayable above the 6th fret because the action was so high. So, I slowly took off the neck and tried
at least 8 different paper shims.... low and behold I found the right one and the guitar is glorious to play now!
HATS OFF TO TED !!!!!!!!!!!
I WISH TED THE BEST AND I HOPE HE GETS WHAT HE DESERVES !
I just joined Ted's channel. As a guitarist, I find his channel is incredibly important for
actually learning about the instrument that I am communicating with.
I'm glad there are still people out there that take this very seriously but also seem like
they are having fun doing it... It's what "youtube" is for.
I find Ted's videos to be very relaxing to watch, it's just fun to watch someone do fine craftsmanship.
I don't always watch luthier videos, but when I do it's because Ted put out a new one! Proud of this Hamiltonian!
Theres something really calming about Teds voice and mannerisms. His videos are a world of knowledge but at the same time are also really soothing and refreshing to watch.
Almost ASMR like 😂
Ted is very popular and talented. He even did a seven part Harmony. Sounded great! :-) Thanks for the interview!
A humble hardworking man , good stuff guys
Ted is a Great Luthier! I am amazed by his content and abilities. Great job Ted
Am a real fan of Ted's work. I started back in 1969- repairs for the only luthier in my city, Adelaide, South Australia.
I got serious by 1980 in repairs, electronics and made a Dreadnought in 2004. I hate the business talk about CZcams and Patreon- they're only interested in the money and number of hits.
Ted does great work and I have recommended him to members of TDPRI.
I enjoy his work as he speaks slowly, like us Aussies, Yanks speak too fast.
Ted's the MAN!! I've learned so much from him in my journey to become a more competent luthier. All other luthier YT channels pale in comparison. And he's really funny to boot...bonus!!
You said something that I have commented on Ted's videos before. I come for the repair content and stay for the random new words to Google. Really enjoy the content and very happy you posted the entire interview.
Ted is fantastic. I've been learning a ton. I'm really curious to see what bits of knowledge present themselves to me in future times of need. He also has a great sense of humor. Thanks for all the great lessons, Ted. I really appreciate it.
Ted's channel is a treasure for those who want to learn this amazing craft, or to become better at it. I've always been handy and able to do a lot of things with wood and metal, and after watching just a few of Ted's videos, I started buying guitars, repairing them and reselling them. I've done roughly 20 in the last year, and it's been an absolute blast.
I think, like myself, most people enjoy watching talented craftsman working.
When you have one with the master talent like Ted, it makes for a "must watch", even if you work in a factory or an office. Most people can identify with awesome workmanship, no matter what the trade. Thank you for this interview !!! Cheers
Watching Ted's craftsmanship and listening to the history of the instruments is just really interesting. It's like watching an unfolding story. I look forward to each episode and the story that unfolds. Ted's is just really informative.
I watched this when it was on Ian's Patreon. Both of you fellows offer a great contribution to luthiers and those who repair guitars. I have watched all of Ted's videos, and since I am just now returning to building and repair after decades away from the craft., you are both valuable assets. Ted's humility makes his presentations relaxing and educational. It is like being in the shop of a kind friend. Both of you know, I learned to build in 1969-70 with a fellow group of "stoners." During 39+ years as a trial lawyer, I did an occasional guitar and repairs. Over those years, I assembled a very good shop it is just now out of storage, but not in my home yet. At 75, I am eager to get started again. Thank you.
Ted's video's are the best I have ever watched
You've taught me a great deal about repair and especially the hand tools you use. thanks very much. (a loyal fan)
I missed this! (rats.). I stumbled on Ted's work last year and have made a regular habit of watching his videos. I have 'some' skills with woodworking - not instruments etc. Ted's work is both entertaining and informative. My Sunday mornings while I was living overseas (and now that I'm back in Canada) are all about morning coffee & watching Ted's latest work - it's almost meditative.
Ted was kind enough to answer a quick question I sent him about what he'd use to make a small change I wanted to do in my guitar.
His videos inspired me to start doing set up and basic repair on guitars.
I've done a handful now with good results and it's been a great way to make a little cash and help people out.
What makes Ted so special is obviously that he is so uncommonly smart
Ted is an amazing master luthier and I love his videos. Really great stuff and I’ve learned so much from him.
Ted is the best. I've seen every vid he's made. Just has a natural presence and astonishing hands. His work is a joy to watch.
I have been watching ted's channel for over 3 yrs now and I think he's the best all round luthier on youtube. I have, on a couple of occasions emailed ted to ask his advice, he has answered me promptly and given me great tips. What keeps me watching is his humble attitude, none of this I'm a super duper luthier and you're just know nothing plebs so bow at my feet b. s that is apparent from some luthiers. I have a guitar I would love to have ted work on but unfortunately living in England international shipping charges mean that won't happen, thank god for the videos
What a shame i just found this. I would have loved to ask a few questions. I was one of those 15 people viewing Ted's content before the now famous "you won't believe" video. TBH if you look around you will find guys like him in just about every city. The great thing about Ted is that he would be the first to admit this. And it's so great that his type of content can still be found on YT.
Thanks for sharing this with your subscribers! Great video. I like Ted’s work and his videos. Great stuff.
I love that Ted has a DIY / Punk attitude and ethics regarding his approach to repair, the way he operates his business, and who he caters his work to.
Ted, you are inspiring, please keep it up
Well Ted, I'm a social worker, life long guitar player, have built a few T style guitars and do turning. You channel is my new favorite....literally watched your complete back catalog in two weeks and have learned SO much about woodworking in general.
I'd love to see Ted take on an apprentice or open a small school. He's a wonderful teacher and gives excellent voice.
I'd love to be that apprentice. 😊
@@courier11sec You're not alone. I'd consider moving to Ontario just to have him look after my guitars.
Thank you for this podcast Ian! Ted recommended this channel so I subbed. The twoodfrd channel is one of my favorite channels on all of CZcams.
You bet!
I've watched nearly of Ted's videos. They are awesome. Thanks Ted
People like Ted are what is right in this world we live in.. Thanks for a great interview..
Ted is an inspiration for level headedness and educated peformance. I wish everyone was a little bit more like Ted. Thank you Ted!
This is GREAT! You're asking Ted many of the questions I've wanted to ask, but don't want to burden Ted with because I know he's busy..
Ted's vids r great and really educational. been subscribing for years. ty ted for all your work
Love Ted Woodford videos. He shows his skills off well and the quality is amazing. Rosa Stringworks is my other favorite. Hopefully you'll be the next favorite!
Ted's videos show not only his luthiery skills and vast cross section of experience, but his love of stringed instruments and the reverance he shows to well built and designed instruments, be they custom hand or factory made specimens.
Ted's channel is my favorite
I love this guy,
with every video he posts I learn something
and the best part about it is sometimes he does the same job, but gives you additional information.
I think that I have seen all of his videos, and I have no problem watching them again and again until he posts something new!
I enjoy your videos as they help me understand how guitars are made and why they sound the way they do. I appreciate your work.
I love Teds channel. One of the few I have patience enough to watch from start to end when he post new episodes. Calmly explaining , and not lot of stressful music and gimmics. And I learn a lot as well. Great stuff.
Same here top notch
I'm a big fan of Ted's work, so I really enjoyed hearing his story here. Also, I share a last name with the host! Not related as far as I know... Not a luthier but a player since childhood and owner of an embarrassing number of mostly budget level guitars and related instruments. I'm finding that as I binge watch Ted's videos, useful information seeps in through osmosis. Like, I no longer have to think about things like string height and neck relief specifics, because he does that every time and now I do too when investigating issues. I now think in 16th's of an inch and have a much better grasp of the range of acceptable values. So yeah, this stuff is great even for idiots like me setting up a cheapo Amazon buy!
The intrigue is in how one goes about taking the proper course of action to get the job done, and from what I've seen, Ted has the ability to sort it all out.
I love Teds vids. It really resonates that he was considering academia at one time because, as I keep saying in comments on his videos, they are an education.
Ted is a treasure. I play guitar and repair them in my spare time but if he switched format I’d watch him work on anything.
Thoroughly enjoy Ted’s videos. I learn so much, and love the content and pace of them. Each new one is an eagerly awaited treat.
Teds delivery is awesome. I cannot get enough of his neck resets or Les Paul headstock breaks
Ted is wonderful, knowledgeable, and entertaining.
Takes you on a ride within his world, and it's great.
Ted's channel, best guitar repair video's on the web. By far.
The painstaking detail, the quality of craftsmanship and the entertaining narration make this one of my favorite CZcams video series. It has inspired me to mangle some poor, uncollectable, acoustic guitar. But that's what it's all about, the learning experience. Thanks Ted !
Ted is so awesome, love his channel. His stories and experiences; good stuff.
I subscribe and watch for the repairs and practical tips. I can understand the asmr though. Ted's voice is pretty calming. Bob Ross made his show to teach his style of painting. People now watch him for that asmr calming effect. He had the hair, Ted has the beard. Lol..and now at 25 minutes I am laughing at myself.
i have now watched almost every video of teds and he does have the best youtube channel out there not only is he talented but intelligent at doin his job it definitely makes you think about how your goin to accomplish your work i love watching his videos thank you for this interview
Ted is great. His sense of humor is much appreciated. He's is a good story teller as well.
I'm an amateur luthier and also have a CZcams channel and Patreon page that helps pay the rent. You guys hit on so many points that are so close to home for me. Great stuff. Thanks.
Just subbed. Interesting looking stuff!
@@theloothgroup Thanks Ian. Your Patreon group looks pretty interesting too. You'll probably see me pop there eventually. My main interest is building banjos but you can bet I'll be trolling your stuff on the next repair I tackle.
I play guitar and do some of my own repairs and customizing . Ted is a great narrator as well as a top luthier so he's informative and entertaining.
Thanks for this! I love watching Ted work! He is a down-to-earth regular guy sharing what he does so well!
