The Battleship IOWA (BB-61) was to depart for San Pedro on Sunday, May 20th, but was delayed due to heavy seas of southern California. Instead of escorting the IOWA under the Golden Gate, the Liberty Ship Jeremiah O'Brien cruised over to Richmond and offered her a Champagne Toast. Views of an annular eclipse capped a fantastic day on the bay!

The engine is a vertical reciprocating triple expansion steam engine of 2,500 IHP with cylinder diameters of 241⁄2" - 37" - 70" and a stroke of 48", driving a single screw at 76 rpm for an average cruising speed of 11 knots. Steam enters the high pressure cylinder (24 1/2" bore) at 200PSI, is exhausted and enters the medium pressure cylinder (37" bore) at 75PSI, is exhausted and enters the low pressure cylinder (70" bore) at 12PSI, and then is exhausted. Other smaller steam engines and turbines powered pumps, fans, dynamos, etc. Steam is produced by two oil-fired boilers, each with 4,852 square feet of heating surface, and furnished 220PSI t 440°F to the throttle, exhausting into 26 inches of vacuum. It was wonderful to watch! Many thanks to all the ships crew, particularly those of the Engine Room on my part!
