When your AirPods are connected to the device you are having trouble auto connecting to, go to Bluetooth settings. Click on the “i” next to AirPods Pro to access settings. Make sure Connect to this device is set to Automatically. I had disabled mine and forgot to turn it back on. Unless you are connected to the AirPods you won’t see these options. Hope that helps.

Forget the AirPods from both devices.
      Reset the AirPods.
Connect to the devices and make sure connect to this device is set as automatic.
I sign out of iCloud account in both devices.
      Restart devices.

The issues with auto device switching are abundant, as seen from this video and my and other users experience. Just check the forums. Hopefully Apple sends out another firmware update soon. They must be aware of this, especially if they’re using the products like their customers. The not switching back from iOS to macOS seems to be, currently, the most common bug. Looks like it is not a problem with the devices itself, it is actually your iCloud account: A Step that worked for me was sign out and them sign in from the iCloud in all your devices
    - I saw some people that had success also when they set up the two-factor authentication on their iCloud account.
As mine was already set up before I bought the AirPods, I only signed out and then signed in from iCloud on all my devices. (Also, forget the AirPods from your devices before doing so)
Edit: It I still not working seamlessly for me, but it wasn't working at all - So, working sometimes is some progress HAHA

Just got some AirPods Pro for the switching feature, and they suck. I work on Google Voice on Mac, and take WhatsApp voice calls on my iPhone all the time. My Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 worked very well switching between the two, but wanted something smaller, less cumbersome, and maybe even more seamless. So after upgrading my Mac to Big Sur and my iCloud account to 2FA (I was holding out), everything was supposed to be magical... it's not. If im connected the Mac and a WhatsApp call comes in on the phone it connects the Airpods, but I get no audio. If I hang up and call back, then it works on the phone. But then it won't re-connect to the Mac automatically. Why hype a feature that doesn't even work right? Why does it work just fine on regular Bluetooth headphones that are not even Apple branded!?
