  • The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v4 undergoes yet another significant change in its latest iteration. And while it's likely going to be one of the best daily trainers of 2024, I'm not sure I personally enjoy it more than the last version.

I think it's reasonable to assume that if AI could experience and review running shoes, their reviews would be significantly more comprehensive and well written / communicated than human ones. The obvious larger technological hurdle that needs to be surpassed for AI to replace human reviewers is the creation of AI replica-humanoid bodies capable of running and experiencing the shoes for themselves.

wider can mean two things: fit or footprint
fit: this shoe came in wide sizing for v3.
footprint: widening the footprint tends to make a shoe more stable and less speedy

If I can see how you land, the type of weather and surface you're on, and how you run mechanically then your review is much easier for me to align to myself to make decisions about what I might need. Im sick of going into review videos and people are dressed in sportswear but then only walk in the shoe. Walking is not the same as running at all. Also interesting to see the Rebel kinda folded in to the SC line - looks like there’s continuity from the Rebel up thru the SC Trainer > SC Elite. I kinda liked that the Rebel existed on its own in the past, but was looking forward to it finding its place in the flagship training-racing lineup. Now I’m not so sure, if it’s gonna be put into a chonker daily role.

@@kofuzi as someone who has fitted 100s of people in newbalance's, it's not a rare miss. NB is consistently off in sizing between pairs, models lines and versions. 880v11-13 fit 0,5 small, used to be quite wide then became kind of narrow, 1080 fit 0,5 big, same as the RC Elite v2. I recently got to test the 880v14, first time in my life I had to size up to a 12,5 and I have probably tested 60 pairs of shoes last couple years.

Good review. I definitely plan to try the Rebel v4 as I'm an unabashed NB fanboy, but this shoe seems like such a major departure from my beloved v3 that I've stocked up on multiple pairs of it with the recent sales going on. Never got to try the v2 and I know that many Rebel lovers say that's "The One", but the v3 does a lot of things very well considering its lower stack and minimalism compared to all these super trainers coming out these days.
I also love the Takumi Sen 8/9 for the workouts, so I don't expect the Rebel v4 to take on that role. Seems like a jack-of-all-trades shoe but which does certain things better than others. Interested in knowing how the foam holds up after 100 miles. I haven't had any durability issues with the v3 as some have reported and I know there are concerns about how long the v4 will hold its bounce and responsiveness.

    3) It sounds like the changes for v4 are headed in the right direction for me personally. I’m a fan of the Rebel line, but I found the v3 a bit too soft and it had the tendency to bottom out-and I’m not a big guy. Is this drifting more into Beacon territory if they're firmer now? I've enjoyed the Beacon v1, Tempo v2, and Rebel V2 over the years...I've tended to grab those for what I might would call "fartlek days"...a progression run during the week, or a run that includes some strides in it because they help me practice my up-tempo form without aid, but generally not shoes I'd pick for a structured workout day.

I've been a fan of the Rebel since the first version and like the look of this new version, but I'm disappointed that it seems like NB is moving further away from the original design of the Rebel. I don't like how wide this shoe looks to be, and how these shoe companies keep adding more and more stack to shoes. I really liked how the older versions felt so nimble, lower to the ground, and flexible/comfortable without a plate...pretty much a do everything, general purpose running shoe. I've been looking forward to the v4 release since my v3s are falling apart... hopefully these won't disappoint.

So does NB have a tempo / speed day, non-plated shoe? I thought that was the Rebel's spot... or is it that this market is a dead end because people want a plate in their tempo / threshold shoe? I have a V3 and it doesn't inspire me to do easy runs at all... it's way too tempting to pick up the pace and have fun (hence the name!). Does the V4 kind of kill that?

      @@kofuzi Sure.
People like to compare current trainers like the Novablast 4 and now this to earlier counterparts, where they were more “fun” because they were more propulsive, yet were unstable even for the most neutral runner and/or had awful durability. It seems like a daily shoe is now “boring” if it doesn’t have a huge risk/reward to running in it, which in my opinion, isn’t what a bread and butter daily trainer is for. I like a daily trainer that makes my feet and legs do the work while protecting them - this makes it so if and when I do put some sort of propulsive shoe on my feet, it will make me run that much better in them because I can put more muscle into them.

@@io-rj6sk personally I try to avoid plates in my uptempo shoes for a couple reasons. First I like to have a shoe thats fun to turn over but not giving too much performance help, so when I switch to a plated or "rod - ed" shoe for dedicated workouts it feels more pop - y (thats probably purely psychological) The more tangible reasons are I alternate tempo days with hill reps and I really like light weight, very flexible shoes for hills so its nice to have a shoe that can double for both and I often try to squeeze in tempo sessions on lunch breaks where I'm on uneven sidewalks, or pausing for traffic for part of the run and don't really need a set it and forget it experience
