It’s not that we don’t like him. It’s the fact he’s ranked number 9 without a single ranked win his best win being Raoni Barcelos who lost 2 out of his last 5, and Umar is getting the number 2 ranked guy only because of his relationship with Khabib and the fact he’s undefeated helps. At least with Taira he was booked in 2 different fights before Perez. 1 on short notice against Tim Elliott who ended up pulling out and other with Van, the UFC didn’t want two rising prospects fighting each other so they gave them ranked opponents. Plus Perez is the worst top 5 who lost to the number 6 and would lose to most of the top 15 so giving Taira him isn’t really similar with Umar and Cory in this situation. Alex’s last win before Nicolau was June 6th 2020 against Formiga who isn’t in the UFC anymore, Perez then lost 3 in a row and got 1 win after that on short notice. Whereas Cory could be asking for a title shot if Merab wasn’t in the division. 3 wins in a row against top 10 opponents in Marlon Vera who fought for the title, Font and Yadong. Vera at the time of fighting Cory was ranked number 3 so Cory realistically could’ve called for a title shot after that win. At the end of the day though Cory wants to fight Umar so it doesn’t matter what people think about Umar not deserving this fight. I think Umar will win despite Cory improving his ground game since the Sterling fight, I just hope it’s a good competitive fight where we can see how Umar deals with adversity if it comes to it, should be interesting to see. I’m not mad at the fight. I just don’t like that he’s ranked without beating a single ranked guy meanwhile you have guys below him who fought like hell to get into the rankings. I think they’re pushing him way too hard and it’s gonna backfire if he’s not as good as we think and gets chinned by Cory. Also not to mention like it or not those guys have Dagestani privilege in the ufc.
