    In Story 2, the beat begins in a 3/4 time signature. Every 8 bars, a beat is added to the bar, making the next 8 bars 4/4, then 5/4, 6/4 etc, all the way up to 12/4

    The rapper is Daveed Diggs, he starred in Hamilton, and he played the character you mentioned in Black-ish so you were on point there. Also, not sure if you notice but Daveed never uses the first person in clipping.'s lyrics (hence why the album title is CLPPNG, because they took out the "i"s) and they also never use drums. Any drums you think you hear are either synthesisers or samples. All the weird sounds are field samples they recorded themselves too, so they would have recorded all the alarm clock sounds manually instead of just finding royalty free alarm clock sounds, they do everything manually. They're one of my top experimental Hip Hop groups because they're so fucking inventive

    Also, ‘Williams Mix’ is a tribute to John Cage’s William’s Mix from the 1950’s, in which Cage pioneered the technique of tape splicing to create a mix of jumbled sounds. He even created a score heavily detailing how to precisely cut each tape to perform Williams Mix. Although it may sound dated now, Cage was one of the earliest pioneers of electronic music, and has directly influence clipping.

    The story of story 2, is about a bar tender who is walking home thinking about his past. his past as a serial arsonist. The character also explains that he hasn't told anyone he has done any of these fucked up things, except for Ronald (friend/lover, I'm not really sure) who he thinks wont tell anyone or do anything. While walking home he sees a car that drives past him, He thinks he recognizes it , but he isn't sure. Then he looks up and sees that there is ash falling from the sky and he starts sprinting home. He tries to call his baby sitter that is watching his kids, but no one picks up. He keeps sprinting home, as he is starting to realize that the past is catching up with him, and now someone has set his house ablaze like he did to so many other families. He reaches his house, and it's what he thinks, his house was burned down with his kids inside. I assume that Ronald either told someone, and they did it. Or he burned mikes house. The song is essentially about karma.

    Daveed Diggs is the guy rapping. He has been a part of clipping for awhile but blew up after he was featured in the massively popular "Hamilton, The musical" on-Broadway. I myself am a huge fan of daveed.

    If you're curious Shawn, my interpretation of Story 2 is that the protagonist, Mike Winfield, is a reformed arsonist (hence him visiting Doc Clark, and the charred skeletons in his closet and the matchbook in his sock), who breaks up/rejects a man named Ronald. My theory is that the person who burns down the protagonist's home at the end of the song is Ronald. He recognizes a blue Acura ("where had he seen that car before"), possibly from the dates/interactions he had with Ronald. Mike possibly told Ronald of his arsonist past, and then Ronald, hurt by Mike's rejection of him, decided to inflict upon Mike what he had inflicted upon others so much in the past.
    I don't know if I explained it all that well, but hopefully my point got across. Glad you like the album m8

      I think he's an ex-hitman. They have stated all the Story tracks are related, and there are little clues about multiple hits being performed in 1,2, and 5, specifically. The deaths in 1 and 5 happen at the same time.

    Dunno if Shawn looked into it further or looked up the lyrics, but Story 2 is about a serial arsonist that has destroyed many homes and lives with his pyromania, only to walk home from his shitty bar job and find that one of his past victims (familiar car?) has taken revenge and burnt down his house with his family inside. The song is dense as hell and they fit a ton into 2 minutes as well as having crazy good flow and instrumental.

    One of my personal favorites. I get what you're saying about the lyrical themes. Although they've said in interviews that they're not trying to criticize or "deconstruct" the violent, drug-dealing, gangster thing, I do feel like they're deflating it. That's what I personally get from songs like 'Work Work'. It isn't that people in general don't matter, but that individuals such as the ones described in the song mostly wind up as nameless statistics. For all of their romantic, gangsta trope-laden badassery: "No obituaries for the most part/Nobody cares you are not even a co-star/Just an extra/They read about it as a number/Names got money in their wallet". Some people matter, have names, get noticed when they die. The people in 'Work Work' don't. 'Get Up' and 'Ends' have some similar ideas going on.
    I recommend watching some of their videos as well. They're really well made.

    Hey Shawn loving this video man this is such a dope album! But to explain the beat/tempo changing on Story 2 it's actually pretty simple. All that's happening is the time signature starts from 3/4 (3 quarter notes per measure) and then goes to 4/4, then 5/4 and so on and so forth throughout the song. Hopefully this helps :)

      Shawn Cee Okay so count out 1 2 3 4 in a pretty straightforward rythym repeating it right? That's 4/4, if you count 3 times in the same period it's 3/4, 5 times it's 5/4, etc.
      Someone correct me if my super simplistic explanation is way wrong.

      Prolly not gonna read this, but there is a percussive "psshh" noise every time the time signature changes. It starts out with 3 beats per measure (proabably most easily notated as 3/8), and every start of a measure there's also a distinctive beep. When the song starts, you can probably easily count "1,2,3; 1,2,3; 1,2,3; 1,2,3" and then he starts rapping. It loops through 8 of these groups of 3 after he starts rapping, then you hear the percussive "psssh" sound, signaling a time signature change. Every time you hear that noise, each measure (or "bar") gets another beat. So at around 9 seconds into the song, you can hear the beat go from "1,2,3; 1,2,3; 1,2,3; 1,2,3" to "1,2,3,4; 1,2,3,4; 1,2,3,4..." then after 8 measures of the 4 beats per measure, it goes to 5 beats per measure, then 6, 7, and 8, ending in the 8/8 time signature, or 4/4. That happens about halfway through the song, and it does a very similar thing in the second half after a little transition period that I can explain if someone would like. But anyway, it is a very interesting composition rhythmically ESPECIALLY for a hip-hop track, and somehow it doesn't sound gimmicky.

    The frontman is called Daveed Diggs, he's not really that big pre-clippng, but you're probably just recognising the Andre 3k influence in his delivery. I thought 3k's verse on Blonde was actually super influenced by Daveed. (Btw mad props for the thumbnail)

    Love that you listened to this album - one of my favourites. As you loved Story 2 but lost the plot of it slightly (understandable given how full on it is):
    I think Story 2 is about a character called Mike Winfield who is a reformed arsonist/pyromaniac, someone who is struggling to keep his destructive relationship with fire in check. Having now become a father, he's been going to therapy to deal with his issues, but there's something intoxicating about the danger in his past that still occupies his thoughts. On his way back from a particularly rough night at work, Mike is reminiscing...he was romantically involved with a character called Ronald, who was the only person he told about his past since reforming, but it didn't end up going anywhere and Mike finds his thoughts bouncing between Ronald and the grisly details of his crimes. He also mulls over the deeper layer of issues he had that drove him to become obsessed with fire, mentioning that "water had never been a friend" to him.
    He is jolted out of his daydreaming by a car that seems familiar to him, which could be Ronald's or perhaps a car belonging to a family member of a previous victim(s) of his. This is followed by the warning signs of a fire in his street: he runs back at speed to his house, with a sudden fear and empathy for the people he wronged in the past. When he arrives, he sees his house on fire and cannot locate his family, so assumes the worst. In his desperation and loss of desire to live (if his family isn't there to share his life with him), he runs into the building in a last-ditch attempt to save his family - or to possibly sacrifice himself to atone himself for his past. Before he can do this he is wrestled to the ground by a bystander or, more probably Ronald or the car driver and forced to survive while he loses everything meaningful to him (which could be considered a punishment worse than death, and especially ironic given the kind of guy Mike is).
    Keep up the great work man, and I second the dude that recommended Milo for a future vid. Or Open Mike Eagle. Or both?

    What I also love about Story 2 is that he gets calmer and calmer over time, like as the beat gets a beat added to it every time, going from a 3/4 to a 8/4, he's comfortable in his ignoring of problems, and with the lyrics he starts noticing something wrong, and that's when the adrenaline hits in and the beat changes completely when he's running, until the end where he basically becomes suicidal.

    I love how innocent this is. Specifically, when in "Taking Off", in reference to living in the ghetto, the song goes
    "There they cry for more of that good poison
    That hood oil
    That cash cow need cash now
    Just add water and back off of what momma taught ya"
    And he thinks it is in reference to thinning out FOOD products to stretch it out. Like, yea that's a thing, but do you really think that's what he was talking about? You need to forget the way you were raised to do this? It leads into the next line, which is about how there is no Jesus in these areas despite the symbolism people may display.
    Making food cheaper...Alright kid, you stay innocent. Don't let them break you.

    Im happy you got around to listening to this album. it's pretty great. One of the things that the rapper has imposed on himself is that whenever he makes clipping songs he never raps in first person. He never says I. it's crazy right?

    Definitely listen to Splendor and Misery, that was one of my favourite albums of last year and it's one of the most cohesive and cinematic albums I've ever heard. Also check out Ski Mask's new mixtape
