    I'm not big into religious songs, either, but this one's nostalgic for me (as it apparently is for PTX) because I was reeeaally into Sister Act 2 for some reason.
    It's also impressive for Mitch and Matt - Mitch's amazing solo, and Matt for featuring him beatboxing *and* hitting that last high note, both of which too many people miss. He needs his credit for those feats!

    • @amandasamson4513
      @amandasamson4513 Před rokem +2

      I missed Matt beatboxing too, untill I listened close and realised Kevin was rapping the second part. it HAD to be Matt Beatboxing.

    PENTATONIX SEASONS OF LOVE on the Capital Concerts Channel is a good one to hear Mitch singing backup vocals in his lower register. (Although the song is actually more of a Kirstin showcase.)

  • @trishmartinez-cox4070
    @trishmartinez-cox4070 Před rokem +15

    This song is from the movie- Sister Act 2. This is pretty close to the original song. They sang this song as the last one of the night during the Evergreen Christmas tour last year. It really is a very upbeat song although heavy on the religious connotation, however MOST Christmas songs have a religious theme ;o)

  • @tundiel
    @tundiel Před rokem +20

    They nearly always sound better live, they all 'feed' off the energy from the audience.
    This is actually taken from the movie 'Sister Act 2', and it's pretty much identical in the arrangement. Mitch sang the part that Lauryn Hill sang in the movie.
    There's an audio only of their cover of A'ha's 'Take on Me' which shows Mitch's highs and lows perfectly 😁

    • @missangie001
      @missangie001 Před rokem +1

      I love PTX too but this is not my favorite either. You are right the arrangement seems identical to the movie as does the rap sequence and much of the choreography. Even though they did a good job, the whole performance just didn't seem to reflect their own personalities or creativity.

    They all are way better live than in recording, which shouldn't be possible. Scott and Matt specifically just LIVES for the stage and are such entertainers. Mitches voice suffers a bit from mixing I think. The less edited his voice is, the more impressive it is, to me. So I prefer his voice live. They are so impressive. Did you notice that Matt was doing bass, rap, beat boxing AND a high note?

    Best rap cover is Scott and Mitch covering Feeling Myself on their Superfruit channel. Kevin and Matt do a nice rap bit in the Dynamite x Butter Mashup. Scott raps in Can't Hold Us, but Mitch is generally acknowledged as the overall best rapper, featured in Problem, Starships and others.

    I wish you had a PTX playlist. I was trying to see what you've already seen so I didn't give you duplicate suggestions, but you should consider the 2016 Popspring concert. It's amazing. 3 originals and their MJ medley, so it's about 20 minutes long, but believe me, if you choose to react to it every Pentaholic will be here for the whole thing because it's one of our favorite live performances. It was professionally filmed as well, so no having to listen to poor sound and video quality. Please do this one!

    For most of Pentatonix's career, it was hard to find a good live performance except some appearances on TV talk shows or fan-recorded excerpts from their TV specials. Lately cell phone videos are getting better in both video and sound, so fan-recorded concert videos are better. And there are lots of videos like this, fan-recorded from professionally filmed pay-per-view streams. There are fan-posted excerpts from last year's Evergreen tour, this year's Hollywood Bowl concert (where they performed new versions of some of their greatest hits), and this year's "Christmas Extravaganza" tour. So if you want to check out more live performances, ask for recommendations.

  • @thechomiji
    @thechomiji Před rokem

    I saw them in Fairfax, VA, this past December. They are AMAZING in concert, and they have all sorts of special things that they only do in concerts. For example, there's always a Kevin section where he plays the cello, and more recently, Matt joins him on drums. The audience always cheers their favorite - for some fans, that's every single one of them - and yes, they pick up the energy of the crowds. Scott, who's a huge ham (Lord bless him), always throws in extra riffs. Part of that, he has said, is to prove that they aren't lip-synching to their recordings.

    I had to laugh when you mentioned Michael Jackson, because that portion of the song was woven in from a Janet Jackson song. And the origin of the song is from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, so the arrangement migrated quite far from the original. In the movie, the chorus was about two dozen students (with a backing track), so reworking it into a five-part arrangement was also quite a feat.

  • @mmg8823

    They are a lot of fun live. Their singing is great (of course). They interact with the audience. and it's the only place you can hear the beat boxing version of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. (They do have other instruments on that one.)

    As for Mitch`s voice range he has 6 octaves + 1 sound (A1 - B7 by Axel Fuentes)
    "Mitch Grassi is well-known for his dimensional countertenor singing as well as his agile chest voice, which tips into the lower 5th octave. Additionally, he also has demonstrated control of a whistle register, stretching far into the higher octaves, as well as occasional low, growled notes. Grassi remains remarkable not only for his range, but his quality, control, pitch, and innate mastery of his voice. "

    • @UserHorologium
      @UserHorologium Před rokem +1

      Mitch has an impressive range, but it's not really quite that wide. The lowest notes in that video are not sung (and they are unsupported), and the whistle notes are not something they will ever incorporate into a song (although the little run he does in that Lucky Charms BTS is astonishing, it's not something he can do over and over again). Scott actually has the widest range of all of them, even discarding the growled A1 and the shrieky high note from the Frozen medley.

    • @grazynawikert-unger2122
      @grazynawikert-unger2122 Před rokem

      @@UserHorologium The group’s tenor, Mitch Grassi, is special for an easily discernible reason: his incredibly high and versatile vocal range. Grassi is able to sing the females parts to many songs due to his incredibly well-trained and somewhat feminine head voice, and has received widespread acclaim for his unique vocal sound. Mitch is one of the most recognizable members of Pentatonix, and it’s easy to see why: people introduced to the group for the first time are often mesmerized by both his sheer vocal talent and his unusual voice. Grassi’s voice “fills out” Pentatonix’s roster in a way few other singers could, and is a major reason the group has such uniquely wonderful acapella arrangements. The group’s baritone, Scott Hoying, is impressive not because of his vocal range, which at four octaves wide is considered fairly standard, but rather because of the incredible control he has over his voice. Hoying is often affectionately titled “The King of Riffs and Runs,” because of his ability to seamlessly transition between notes at an incredibly high speed while also maintaining each individual note’s unique character and tone.

    Well, I LOVE this song! But I’m a Christian and this song has great meaning to me. And Mitch kills it to boot. They are so together when they perform this, I always look forward to it. This is an old hymn, which they put an energizing spin on. If you didn’t like this, you’d HATE the unadorned hymn. But I LOVE that they do this live. I LOVE that they get the Word of God out there with finesse and the joy the song requires. I LOVE that they show through their performance of this song, that God is JOY, LOVE and ENERGY! There is no video, but their cover of Take On Me is a good example of Mitch's range. They basically recreated the Joyful Joyful medley scene from Sister Act 2 including similar choreo with Mitch taking the Lauryn Hill part. It starts with Ode To Joy, then the rap O.P.P. by Naughty By Nature, then What Have You Done For Me Lately by Janet Jackson, then it goes back to Ode To Joy.

    Although you know every number is precisely choreographed and orchestrated, this one has a spontaneous feel...more than just being live. I only know this song from the movie Sister Act 2 and don't consider it a Christmas song any more than Hallelujah. I love how everyone still gets their moment to shine, and Matt gets to show off his higher register (just keep it off live Hallelujah performances - honor the song the way it was written and initially performed to bring the group almost 700 million views). They do have several songs where rapping skills are highlighted for various members. Another great reaction, thanks! Love the shock and awe!

      Sister Act 2... it's a pretty big distinction. Sister Act stars Whoopi Goldberg and a bunch of nuns. Sister Act 2 is Whoopi Goldberg and the nuns mentoring a bunch of teenagers, led by Lauren Hill. This was performed by the teens, Mitch sings the Lauren Hill solo here.
      The lyrics also don't just lean to religiousness... it's a mashup of songs that were altered (in the movie) to be religious. Only the first was an actual church song. The rap is especially incongruous, because the original - Down With OPP (Other People's Property) - is a hiphop cheating song.

    There are two kinds of reactions to this. People who have seen Sister Act 2, and people who haven't. Both are equally delighted but I do recommend you look up the finale of Sister Act 2 which this arrangement and choreo is from they were paying tribute to (starring Whoopi Goldberg, and a very very young Lauryn Hill and Jennifer Love Hewitt). It made me giddy that PTX did this version and even kept some of the dance moves!
