- Avocado update - 8 months old as of October 2022. These two avocado trees were planted Feb 25th of 2022. They are grown in peat moss, sand and perlite with compost on top of the soil. I fertilize with a water soluble citrus fertilizer. They are growing near a South facing window.
Happy to see someone plant their trees properly and not in compost. 👍
Thank-you Eli! More people need to know how to properly plant their trees. 🤗
They are looking healthy and growing so fast
Thank-you, they are growing very quickly and very healthy! I'm excited to share what they look like at 9 months.
So beautiful , i love avocado tree:)
Thank-you, I also love avocado trees and the fruit 😁
It is known Avocado plants growen from seeds may take 8 or higher years to give fruits & more surprisingly no guarantee of type of fruits. So ,may have to get grafting done to get variety of your choice
That is my understanding as well. I would like to do some grafting on this tree if it can survive our winters. 🥑👍
Do you expose them to sunlight? Thanks
When my avocado plants are indoors they are kept in front of a South facing window. They do get some sun during the middle part of the day. You can also add some grow lights to help them during the darkest months.
Nice! Are you going to graft it?
I would love to graft my avocado seedlings if I can find some scions.
@@desertgirlcoastallife They're not that hard to find if your in Southern California. What variety are you interested in and maybe I can point you in the right direction.
I would love a Gem or Hass avocado scion. I live in Vancouver, Canada so it is difficult to find places that have avocado scions. If you know of someone that can ship to Canada I would be interested.
@@desertgirlcoastallife I live in southern California and have access to some scion wood. I sent you an email with some options if you're interested
Amazing, I'll get back to you shortly!
Hi, my avocado is about 2ft tall but the leaves on the bottom keep dying off so there are no leaves only on the top 6inches, any idea if this is normal? Thanks .
Hey there, I'd highly recommend checking your soil composition. For optimal fruit tree growth, consider a blend of sand, perlite, and some peat moss. If you can get your hands on decomposed granite, that's an excellent addition. Avoid adding bagged compost directly into your potting mix, as it may contribute to root rot. Instead, incorporate compost into the top 2 inches of the soil to provide nutrients without compromising drainage. Regularly add compost to the top layer as it decomposes, ensuring aeration for your tree roots and efficient water drainage. Hope this advice proves helpful! 😊
@@desertgirlcoastallife Ok I will start again 😀 Thank you very much for replying x
Starting anew with a fresh pit might not be necessary. Instead, try transplanting the existing avocado tree, removing as much of the old soil as possible, and placing it into new soil. With this approach, the tree should rebound fairly quickly. 😊
I want to add that when you grow plants in compost free soil mix you can water more often without fear of root rot. Because the compost is at the top of your plants they will release water quickly and can handle watering every day. You can water it more often if it's warm outside. 👍🏻
What kind of avocado did you plant? it doesn't seem to be Hass
This avocado I purchased from Costco. I thought they were Hass but I'm not entirely certain. The seeds don't grow true to the mother plant so that might be why it doesn't look like a true Hass avocado tree.
@@desertgirlcoastallife it's look like Zutano or Fuerte maybe, those two kinds grows faster from seeds and are used to be grafted... when it's young it have less nodes than hass. Very beautiful tree good continuation
That's interesting! I would be happy with both of those varieties! 🤞🏼
when grow from seeds, Do you know how long they will take to mature and give avocados?
Hi Jose, I think it's possible to see your Avocado tree fruit in 7-10 years. I don't have any personal experience with my avocado trees producing fruit as of yet. I will be doing update videos on all my Avocado trees so hopefully I'll have some information sooner than later.🤞🏼
@@desertgirlcoastallife thank you,, I try every year for the past 4 years and every time they die , I know my mistakes , I hope this time I learn enough to keep it alive :)
Up to 15 years and you never know how good they are going to taste@@desertgirlcoastallife
Did you start in water or in dirt??
I plant all my avocado pits in a equal mix of sand, perlite and peat moss.
@@desertgirlcoastallife -thank you.
You're welcome :)
This is more than double the size of mine and it's 10 months old.
What is your avocado tree planted in and did you start it in soil or water?
@@desertgirlcoastallife Started it in soil and a citrus potting mix. Maybe I need to change the fertilizer.
Do you have any compost mixed in the soil? Are you using a citrus fertilizer?
@@desertgirlcoastallife No. I’ll try that now.
I would be interested to know how it goes.
Avocado trees kept in a pot will restrict their growth. Avocado trees planted outside will produce more fruit and can grow up to 50+ feet tall. That's what I want! YUMMY! Healthy fat food!
I wish I lived in a place where I could grow them outdoors year round! Unfortunately, our winters are too cold so they must live in pots and stay small. I have hope they will mature and produce some yummy avocados 🥑🤞🏼
That's too bad, miss! Here in California, our winters rarely get below 32. I pray the Lord blesses you with an abundance of fruit.
Thank-you Michael! I appreciate your kind words. ☺️ I used to travel frequently to California and always admired the abundance of fruit trees that can be grown with ease there.
Hii what soil needs our trees avocando in 4 months??
Hi, The soil mix that I've had the best success with is equal parts of sand, perlite and peat moss. I always add about 1 inch of compost to the top of the pot but I never mix the compost into the soil.
@@desertgirlcoastallife thanks my lady for your information. If you want send me your email to see my plant
