Well this video has certainly stirred up some strong feelings. David makes it very clear he is expressing his personal opinions, and viewers are welcome to disagree - certainly the situation is different in the USA where semi-autos are more commonly used for clays and game than here in the UK. Let us know what you think in the comments, but let's keep it polite and respectful to all shooters whatever their preferences.
Moans about the gun and it's undesireability on the shooting grounds for nine minutes, then smokes every clay he aims at!
Just being a snob. At the end of the day it slings lead. What's the problem?
The boys across the pond have a high regard for tradition. This includes clothing, shotguns, accessories, etc. I do not agree that you should be banned from a bird shoot/hunt for having a semi-auto but that is their tradition and I respect it. I have seen every kind of shotgun on the sporting clays course and don’t care what people use as long as they are safe and are having fun!
I have this with a 2 starter choke
Just watched the video and I think it needs renamed to 'David's personal opinions on semi-autos and there place in the shooting community' because that's a far stretch to call that a gun review. I wonder if browning have had anything to say about it?
Funnily enough, i bought a maxus a few weeks ago and David sold me the ammunition - immediately went on a 100 clay shoot with it and hit 79. Semis cant be all bad!
I think the remarks "you'll be frowned upon if carrying one of these on the clay ground" and " if you're wearing tweed you won't be carrying one of these" make the review sound snobbish. I think he was too busy running down semi autos to fit any specs in the review.
Wonder how he will feel when he finds out the semi auto was created before the o/u?
Was looking forward to this review..... real shame what an old fashioned biased view of semi autos it did feel somewhat negative towards the many that use semis for clay shooting.
David isn't the only one, I come across this attitude to semi-autos quite often. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that in the UK semi-autos are greatly outnumbered by s/s's and o/u's, so we're less familiar with them, and the different safety protocols that apply.
James Marchington i must say here up north we have quite a large amount of semi shooters and as long as there in a slip or flagged people don’t have any issues but your right.
I guess it varies around the country, I see a few in the south east but not that many.
My God.. my Browning gold is a masterpiece.. superbly built and an excellent firearm.
"On a clay ground I don't believe they have a place". Really?
A disappointingly biased 'review', riddled with inaccuracies (fastest action, don't expect it to shoot lighter loads etc), and sadly demonstrating an outdated attitude to these excellent guns. I'm all for a bit of tradition but semi-autos like the Maxus and A400 are now popular with many clay shooters across the UK who shoot them safely and sometimes very well. I love clay shooting with my semi-auto and usually enjoy David's videos, but having seen this one I have to wonder whether I'll be welcomed at TSC's school for those lessons I was thinking of :(
My views exactly buddy
A dreadful review, full of inaccuracy, misinformation and prejudice. All shotguns are tools for specific jobs. Your use of the term bunny bashing in particular was disgraceful. Browning should pay you to stay at home.
Are you British? If you are then you probably know more than me, but if you're an American like yourself I can understand how this review may seem off putting. I think this review would make more sense from a British perspective.
Nice enough chap. No mention of the speed load function where the first round in the magazine is loaded into the chamber automatically when the bolt is open. Also, the magazine cut off, a safer way to unload rather than cycling the bolt. A half arsed clay/game biased review. At least the US shooters love their guns and just run what they brung. Here, like most aspects of life, it's all about status. What you shoot, how you shoot and where? Gun snobs just sap the joy out of the sport sometimes.
Oh please, really disappointed with David's comments.
Some years ago you would only see side by sides on game shoots, nowadays most are probably over unders.
Pure snobbery, a semi auto like any firearm is a tool, some are more expensive than others and some higher quality with greater workmanships.
I would also argue that Benelli are the best manufacturers of semi's but I'll leave that one for now.
I own many shotguns, including semi's & pumps, some are better finished than others But they are all tools and any will dispatch a pheasant or clay.
Pure snobbery. !!
Interesting point. Over the years I've been shooting, o/u's have become totally accepted on game shoots, which they weren't when I started. So that snobbery, if that's what it was, has changed, yet I see no movement at all in the resistance to semi-autos for driven game. Logically, if snobbery is easing over the years, you'd expect to start seeing them creeping in, but it isn't happening on any shoots I've seen.
James don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the traditional game shoot with its etiquette and theatre , my point was that all firearms are tools and get the job done and David's blatant bias against a Semi was pure and unadulterated snobbery...
Agreed Mark, it’s all part of the day (probably looks like snobbery to non shooters!). David clearly isn’t keen on semi autos for clays, his loss I guess.
@@StrictlyShootingUK I'm a shooter.... And it "does" look like snobbery because I'm afraid it is.!!!
mark farrow Oh well, guess I’m a snob then.
Just an observation, noticed that you are juggling the guns round during your gun reviews, please stop! this is not a good example to set younger shooters
The American Amateur Trapshooting Association would not be very happy with those comments, they have thousands of members using automatic shotguns, and very successful too.
Silly me I thought this would be unbiased review of a firearm. I feel so ashamed for owning a Maxus. Maybe if I save long enough I can afford something approved for clays and not just Bunny bashing.....on a brighter note, love the tweed.
It’s his personal opinion. They’re still allowed in the UK, for now anyway.
@@TSCTheshootingchannel Yes he can have a personal opinion, but when he's wrong he need to feels the brute forces of being wrong
Disclaimer. I’m American. I am blessed to have numerous UK pals. We hiked the Cotswolds. Bath is my favorite city and my wife makes me buy English tea time every visit to Chicago. My clays journey : I bought Pilla glasses, a nice shooting vest and a Caesar Guerini and a Perazzi. One day, at a registered shoot, an old guy with a Vietnam Vet baseball hat showed up with a ratty looking A400 multi target and his hunting dog on a rope leash. I think his sunglasses were Walmart specials. T-shirt/no vest. He shot a 94. Me….not even close. A lightbulb went off. I sold the Pillas, Ceasar and Perazzi. I bought an A400 (Cole Pro) and head out with my Oakleys. No vest, just a T-shirt. My shooting went from the 60% percentile broken targets to the mid 80s. And I feel improvement every outing. A pal I shoot with let’s me play with his DT11. No thanks. I don’t need the recoil or the additional 2 plus pounds. That’s the English system for those of you who may not know it. Means it’s really heavy. Swing and balance are gorgeous on the A400. It’s simply a matter of getting used to a particular scattergun. Now, stand back as I litter the ground with empties and that’s two hits on the scorecard please. Anyone bring their magnet?
I seem to remember Duncan Lawson winning the world clay sporting championship in the 80's with a semi auto Remington 1100
Yes, I remember interviewing Duncan in the 80s, he was known for shooting his Remington 1100. Has there been a top UK clay shooter since who uses a semi-auto? I can't think of one.
Of course, I’d forgotten that.
@@StrictlyShootingUK and he was still using it recently with very impressive form !!
What a load of shite, don’t see semi autos on a registered shoot!......see them every weekend!
he's full of it.
You'll never catch me dressed in tweed.
LoL, touché
These are excellent guns for clay shooting not just bunny bashing
This guys unbelievable, i have thousands of rounds through my maxus sporting clays with no failures. It works with soft recoil shells no issues at all. Ive seen guys with beretta over under and browning over under with plenty of lite primer strikes and ejector issues. Those over under cost and weigh a lot more.
It's no wonder that you have such terrible gun laws in the UK. You are your own worst enemies.
With that said, I found the Maxus to be every bit as fantastic as my Citori.
I would argue that it isn’t necessarily wrong to see these on a have a go stand? Surely it is great for beginners to see and feel a variety of guns and learn more about the options available to them. Lovely gun and I love the speed load system on the maxus 👍
You would feel very twitchy in the states mate. A lot of autos on the clays course. And they win a bit. A better tool than the Yildiz.
Mike Anderson there popular here in the uk this guy seems to have a personal issue not a great review
Well I usually enjoy his reviews. My personal clays gun is a Perazzi, so this is not something that got me bent because he insulted my choice or brand of shotgun. His review is way out of line and his knowledge of this gun is limited.. Too bad. He should take this one down and try again.
Mike Anderson i agree the review is not great not once is there a mention of the browning maxus sporting clays version or the carbon version designed for clay shooting as well
I assume this is in England... I don't know if this guy is just overly biased/cautious but if everyone in England is that worried about a semi auto, we probably wouldn't be friends
Leave the bolt open and insert the shell in the magazine. The load will be whisked up and into the action automatically. It is a speed loading feature that originally appeared on the Browning A-5. Also has a magazine cut-off on the opposite side. Pull it back and anything in the magazine is held in check. Then you eject the chambered round and place the right load in. Or leave it open and empty while crossing a fence.
Can’t wait for a review of a pump action at a clay ground 😆
Yes shooting should be safe but FUN as well god knows we pay enough for the pleasure of clay shooting
SIM pairs that are thrown close together really tests the pump-action shooter! Fun to shoot, and entertaining for those watching as well! :D
nigel Mc Hugh especially when you forget to ‘pump’ and your mates behind you all shout PUMP❗️😆
@@cliveevans5755 And then you can eject the second fired shell into the bin, nonchalant like ....
lol
Been there, done that!
I need your advice I’m new to Skeet shooting and want to buy an o/u and don’t know what to buy browning or beretta . 686 silver Pigeon or 690 Or Cynergy Cx or Citori cxs
Glad to see snobbery is alive & well in clay shooting, most biased review of a gun I've ever seen..
Shoot what you like or can afford
Bit of state the obvious more than the actual review, they are excellent clay guns really fun never had more fun than my old Winchester 1500xtr, been on many a shoot with it along with many clay shoots.....
You forget to mention the speed loadin method of loadin!
Yes one of the best features
What a biased review. I know many people who shoot semi autos at clays sites for various reasons due to health [reduced recoild], preference etc. Whoever said you should only shoot clays with an O/U. He is also very contradictory to many other very experienced people about the use etc of semi autos, I was flabergasted by his stance on semi autos. I question why he was so againgst them for clay shooting. There are many semi autos specifically designed as a clay gun. I think he should get off his biased soap box and consider reporting unbiasedly.
This review has really annoyed me. So I thought I would check out the Browning site. They actually make a specific semi auto for sporting called the MAXUS SPORTING BLACK CARBON FIBER INV+ and they state on the web site "This gun has been specially designed for sports shooting. The ventilated rib, tapered from 6mm to 8mm, gives faster targeting. Its carbon finish gives a particularly unique style."
Andy Wilson jk
To empty the chamber simply move the magazine cut off switch to stop it feeding , the inflex recoil system also reduces the kick from a standard 28g load to very little at all , I’ve had my maxus for over two years & have only had 1 stoppage due to faulty cartridge , & use mine mainly on clay pigeon
This is the second video from the shooting channel I have clicked on featuring Dave and I will make a point to avoid anymore. Bumbling along not able to get his words out, and then on this video starts off bashing the guns people came here to look at.
Very ignorant comments made, and swinging the gun around unsafely like some sort of twirling stick to top it off.
I don't think semi's auto's are unwelcome on clay ground, but Dave's unsafe practices and ignorant comments certainly wouldn't be welcome!
Thanks for the demo, don't think you have much time for semi autos. My maxus is a fine piece of kit, ultra reliable and versatile handles the lightest two and a half inch, to three and a half inch magnums. You never mentioned two functions the maxus has, the speed load function, and the unload function without having to cycle the action. There's a little catch just outside the magazine that allows you to unload each round in the magazine. Also the magazine cut of switch, that holds the rounds in the magazine, if you want to load a different round. You didn't do your homework.
Excellent treatment of a different point of view for us Yanks. I have a semi-auto with an extended magazine tube that holds ten rounds. It is purpose built for Snow Geese as they are listed as an invasive species. There is no limit and farmers are happy to be rid of them. The shotgun works very well and I enjoy shooting it. Imagine shooting a box of shells with only two re-loads.
The shotgun can be returned to the original capacity (3 -5) without difficulty. I guess some people have too much time on their hands; but it was fun to set it up.
I'm pretty much all over under, after owning or extensively shooting most semis out there there's only 2 I own, beretta al390 gold mallards in 12&20.
Not much of a gun review. What about barrel lengths options, weight, choke sizes, chamber sizes. Would have been nice to have a few spec's. All we got was 8 minutes waffling on about how semi autos shouldn't be on games shoots and there frowned upon at clay grounds.
Fenland Wild Camper the maxus is a great fun for clay shooting and rough shooting I have one there not frown upon on clay shoots at all and theese days you see more and more people shooting semi auto.
@@Tav91329 yes mate I know. I was more making a comment towards what this bloke was saying in the video . I have no problem with semi autos at clay grounds.
@@fenlandladoutdoors6877 fully agree with you the guy reviewing seems to have a personal issue with semi autos sadly.
I have a semi auto licence for clay target shooting here in Australia and you have the same mentality as alot of the older generation shooters. I haven't been to a single shoot where instead of being happy that semi autos are still about and not gone and forgotten I'm criticised for using a semi auto at least once per shoot (they aren't built for clay target shooting) I'm told. I've shot better competition with a semi auto then I ever did with a standard under and over. Comes down to preference, and if I never had a back injury and if the laws weren't so restricted here in Australia I would have used a semi auto from the very start!
It makes me smile when people say that you need to use 28 gram shells in a semi. When i started shooting a 28 gram aka 1 oz load was a piddling little squib of a round! 32 grams (1/1/8 oz) was the norm.
Video Summary: 10 minutes of why semi-auto shotguns are undesirable
A Gun is a gun
A semi auto shotgun as far as I'm concerned is the evolution of the shotgun. They pretty much eliminate everything negative that you inherently find an an under and over, namely weight and recoil, this along with the ability to adjust and fit the gun to personal preference confirms the benefits of owning and shooting a semi.... The only downside is the ejection of the spent cartridges, which isn't much of a major issue....i live in the UK and fully understand the shooters in the states preference and why the semi is so liked.. Maybe we need to move with the times...respect David's video though, everyone has their own opinion..
Snobbery at its best.
Best auto period !
I have the ultimate partridges model of the Maxus and only use it for clays. Never had anyone say a bad word to me about it at any clay ground. Plenty of people want a go though! Seen plenty of A400's too, which I would consider a clay gun. I carry it around on a sling and nobody has acted nervous (why you would be nervous of someone with a shotgun slung barrel up at a clay ground is beyond me). I've found it cycles literally any cartridge I've ever used without a single jam. Also, it has a speed loading method. With the action open, just thumb a cartridge into the magazine and it will automatically chamber it. Then push the next two in just the same.
Bit of a conflict in opinion when mentioning it's a specific tool for a specific job, ie "bunny bashing", yet it was made to be a super fast competition gun? Many bunny bashing competitions there?
But yeah, agree with the consensus. It's the outdated image that shooters dont need to hear when they're new to the sport. The boys in tweed with trousers tucked into their socks can continue with their traditions. They have naff all to do with the people like me who shoot only clays for fun. We should be welcoming all new shooters to all the shooting sports. As long as they're legal and behaving responsibly, keep your prejudiced views to yourself, smile and say hello.
On my game shoot I let people shoot autos because they are paying costmores at the end of the day
Maybe he needs to test the Beretta A400 excel multi target and see if that changes his view on semi-autos. This cycles any sort of cartridge. Has full recoil damping. You would not be taking that out 'bunny bashing'.
I have one he's talking crap
interesting view from across the pond--no doubt an accurate appraisal of what's what. i can see nothing wrong with this attitude. if i was fortunate enough to invited to a game shoot, i would try to blend in and not offend--besides, i really like double barrel guns and tweeds.
There is a lot of snobbery in uk clay grounds but give the gun a fair chance stop pushing you’re biased opinion is it just because it’s not a Holland and Holland side by side
These browning maxis 2 is a fantastic bit of kit
Wow that’s stirred up a lot of comments! I have a maxus it’s a fantastic gun that I use for pest control! I don’t think it’s fair to use it on a pheasant shoot for the sake of the birds and on a clay ground nobody can argue they are as well suited as a break barrel because of safety reasons! I think David was trying to make that point but it got lost unfortunately!
what a toff we are in it to have fun it not what you look like or how much money you have
Not too personal review really. It’s a good gun....had one gone traditional but I’d have one again
Maxus is brilliant but I would say if ur gonna use 1 regularly then make sure u break it down to a full clean at least every 3rd time u use it! A simple barrel clean every time isn’t sufficient on this type of shotgun
I use a pump action to shoot and a auto, I also use a camo pump on game shoots nobody ever complains
I'd like to see that 😂 One of my favourite guns is a Remington 870 pump-action which is ideal for ferreting, squirrel shooting etc. Don't think I'd be very welcome with it on a driven game shoot though.
I've used my Mossberg 500 on clay grounds.
Every dog and divil will have a Miroku a Browning or a Beretta O/U, but somehow they all want to try out the 500, at least once. :)
Pump-actions are fun to shoot. One of the first guns I ever bought was a Mossberg 500, shot all sorts with that before I sold it, and regretted getting rid of it almost immediately.
@@StrictlyShootingUK i shoot an old winchester 120 ranger pump .absolutely love it
Hows maxus a tacs au model?
What do u think about this shotgun?
And i subscribed your channel👍
I own one its brilliant never jammed or miss feed
Just imagine how well he would shoot it if he didn't dislike it so much.
will these cycle light loads like the 21 & 24g.
24g yes not 21
@@browningmaxus5360 ive got one and it cycles 21 grams but it needs to be in a 67 or 70 mill case then it shoots them fine
How you have changed in four years of this review
Christ , Try a Fabarm L4S sporter Awesome full stop.
5:51 three barrels in this one? My Maxus has one barrel lol
Does this mean my Panzer Arms AR-12 with detachable 10 rd magazine is out of the question? 🤔
Goddamn the hate is real. Semi auto has a big place in shotgun area.
I’ll use my maxis and beat you at any shoot of your choice with any over under . Easily get high 40’s out of 50 birds every shoot I go to . Trust me this gun is more than capable and in my opinion best bang for your buck !!!!!
they will shoot 24g all day long ! great for clays
love my maxus....... yes the guys i shoot with have a little moan about shell spitting, but its a clay destroying tool..... by design!!!
Review of new one coming soon - Alex
@@TSCTheshootingchannel thanks Alex..... Love you're show x
The only "tool" I see in this video is wearing tweed.
I live in America and I actually shoot over unders and semi autos. Not sure exactly why semi autos are looked down upon in your country as far a competition clay shooting but I really enjoy using semi autos. Several students on my daughters clay team use semi autos and they’re sone of the best shooters I’ve seen. I enjoy over unders and semi autos and don’t look down upon anyone that chooses to shoot either. I usually really enjoy your videos but this was completely biased and full of inaccuracies!!
It’s no wonder gun laws in the UK are so awful. With friends like this knob, who needs enemies? I own every style of shotgun, including high grade english (and american) doubles, and my Maxus gets the nod quite frequently for trips around the clays courses. Hard to beat the versatility and reliability. Nice to target shoot with a gun you frequently hunt with. Nobody wants to go shoot modern 3” magnum steel shot duck loads through a classic Greener. Do us all a favor and put this chap on trapper duty for a bit.
Remind me to avoid tweed.
I love videos like this
Personally mainly shoot O/U but do love they way semi-auto’s handle.
At 8:30 into the video that gun mounting is excellent.
Good semis rock, despite of your personal beliefs!
I love my Browning Maxus 12 gauge !!!!!!!!
Obviously doesnt like semmi autos, this is my favourite rifle, and when i get my licencse I will buy one to go clay pigeon and Practical shooting
It’s a shotgun m8 not a rifle n when you apply for 1 you will realise this
It’s not a £50k Purdey, that’s why he doesn’t like it 🤣
Nothing wrong with the review. Culturally, a repeater doesn't fit into their lineup. No biggie. But he did state it was a nice, well-shooting, bulletproof shotgun.
This review sounded like a liberal giving a gun review.
Your comments are insulting to those who shoot semi-autos.
Not at all - David explains he feels semi-autos are good for pest control etc, and explains why he doesn't think they're ideally suited to the clay ground. Many people will disagree, but that's not an insult.
@@TSCTheshootingchannel .Nope , David makes it quite clear that semi autos are undesirable and by inference so are their owners .
Unless of course it is for lower forms of shooting such as "bunny bashing ".
So if I say airguns aren’t a great choice for clay shooting, will airgun shooters be offended?
@@TSCTheshootingchannel .That's a very fatuous remark ,as you well know .
I don't know anybody that shoots clays with an airgun ,but maybe that's unique to Britain .
One wonders , are airgun shooters welcome on the driven game field ?
You deliberately miss my point. David commented about the suitability of a type of gun for a type of shooting. Why on earth would owners be offended? It’s possible to disagree without feeling insulted.
You call it a review? All you did was showing your dislike for semi autos. You completely forgot to mention 3 main features of maxus. 1- the magazine cut off, 2- the easy loading system without using the switch , 3- easy way to empty the mag without racking the bolt all the time.
Very disappointed buy this gentleman's comments about semi autos I put it down to his age!
Use the speed loading system from browning 🙄
Guns a a gun point in the right direction will break clays or kill birds, to many snobs that have looks for money
Are the Brittish really this snobish about shotguns? I was honestly dissapointed by the biased presentation. Tweed and side by sides wont help you kill more birds.
I'm not impressed. The only discipline where semi autos are frowned upon is trap shooting.
Rubbish use em for clays as good as any other gun , I think the future is in these.
I was on board, everyone has their opinion, but to say a 3" gun wont shoot soft loads is just uninformed. Maybe get a reviewer that has some experience with the type of weapon they are reviewing so as not to make a fool of themselves.
There is a new review coming on the latest Maxus so keep an eye out. TA
Real nice going there dude. Why don't you just bash and insult everyone who owns a browning semi-auto?
We have a review of the latest one coming soon....
Funny review actually
Typical elitism ,trying to refrain from showing his disdain ,about a semiautomatic shotgun. 😂
I actually thought I was going to see a comprehensive review from a so called British reviewer, but was I wrong..
If someone is wondering why I would even comment on this old of review, it's because I recently purchased a lightly used Maxus Carbonfiber Sporting edition, and have been searching for honest reviews on it.
Guess I will keep looking
I use 2 Remington 1187s for my clay shooting and it's people like this guy doing the review that I enjoy pissing off. Snob
I live in Europe and i use it for pheasant hunt..but i dont hunt in your outfit either😂😂
What a load of coswallop! The arrogant comments by Mr Florent just goes to show how much he doesn't do rough shooting.
And my autos cycle just fine with light 1 oz loads, and I have been shooting them for 40 years!
What a muppet
Shooters like this give brits a bad name for snobbery and that’s all this guy is. a absolute snob this is why practical shotgun is becoming more and more popular there’s no judgement for what you use
Snobby little bloke!
What a snob!
A dreadful biased review. There are always semi autos being used at the grounds I go to. They are there for a job ....... yes they are part of which is to hit clays.
The one thing these shotguns are known for is the speed loading, whereby you insert the shell from the bottom and the action will close automatically.
You don't have to push buttons. And no it's not the fastest, and no it's not the best. No one cares about you obnoxious opinion. Banning people because they're using a semi auto.
Plus you should stick to the subject, review the gun. No one cares about your stupid rules in britain and your skeet shooting etikets. Shooting is for fun, not full of pretence about what gun you shoot where. And if you wear that green vest, you don't shoot a semi, please!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with u about everything else but ik from the south of the us and have hunted deer and many other animals with shotguns the maxus is the fastest cycling gas gun i ever shot in my. Life and its never jamned on me but of course i keep my gun clean
Finally a semi auto review. Love the personal touch.
Very limited perspective from a clearly prejudiced and quite unpleasant shooter. Really rather insulting.
What a hypocrite! Talks about how unsporting it is to use a semi auto on the clays field but then goes on to talk about riding in the back of a pickup though the fields shooting rabbits! Can't think of anything more unsportsmanlike than that!
Idk who told you about America? But that isnt correct....
