On one hand, investors are the people who grow an economy.
On the other hand most of them think you can grow your money by 200% a year by doing nothing and are very disappointed when the star-up ceo's that claim that are complete liars that take their money.

That line needs to die because it is not only (mostly) false, most investors actually have a negative effect on the economy. Economies grow because the number of people in that economy grows and/or peoples ability to purchase more grows. Investors can help that but most don't, especial stock holders. The money payed out in dividends could go back into the company, pay people more, pay the companies bills, sustainably grow the company. The best way to grow the economy is to create more good jobs, investors will not create those as they want a return on their investment. Hearing more people and paying employees more take money from the business/company which lowers dividends which lowers returns on investments. The majority of investors hurt the economy.

it's also why "no one wants to work", the workers see the rat race for what it is and know "work hard for future raises/promotion" isn't woth the paper it's printed on, so they are holding out for better pay/hours up front.

I trend to view corporations in much the same light. They just want to exploit me, so I try and take everything I can out that relationship and not trust them.
I've seen colleagues steal a lot of stuff over the years. I honestly can't blame them. If you are being exploited you take back whatever you can.
Legitimately, Cold Take was my favourite Escapist show. I was so happy to see that Frost came with you guys.

I do love how this entire bit is both meta for the “change in scenery” and a genuine pontification on the industry.
I love that this episode isn't just taking a jab at the gaming industry but also at the current job market.
Its a jab at the line must go up mindset. I.e current capitalism.

Yeah, honestly it applies to pretty much every industry right now, not just gaming. Disney, Netflix, Google, and Warner Bros, to name a few, and even in the retail space this is very much the mindset.

This is actually the first Cold Take video I've ever watched, since I was usually just watching for ZP. But I wanted to see everything that's on this new channel, and now I feel kind of bad for not giving it a watch until now.

I like that the unintended consequence is that everyone gets a fresh chance to be seen by a part-pre-existing, part-returning, part-new audience. Almost like some sort of, what's the phrase, uuhhhh, something about wind.

@@Noname72105 I hate to be pedenatic but that's not true, there's plenty of research in multiobjective AI which return a collection pareto optimal solutions. The problem is that humans who deploy and use AI use the type of AI which does rote optimization on a single variable.

This is my favorite show in the internet, and i'm not kidding! Thank god for Frost!
Frost is really making a great addition to your team. A great narrator and a relaxed outlook in most videos. The tranquility can be misleading though Ruiz can be bitting in his comments and i often find myself nodding and thinking to myself "yeah you have a point there".
Indeed the tranquility can be misleading. There is harshness, but it's subtle and creeps up on you, a bit like Frostbite.
Yahtzee's cutting wit is the sort of cutting wit that someone with a sword and rage issues dispenses in an action movie.
Frost's cutting wit is more the knife across the throat in the victim's sleep sort of cutting wit.
It warms my heart to know Frost, like so many former members of Escapist, stuck with their guns to join Nick in Second Wind. Loyalty and friendship are two rare commodities in this world. And it's something neither the suits understand nor can buy.
Truly loving the vibe of this new Cold Take over here, with the black&white footage, the printed out articles and charts - a bit more of a classy take on the video essays that show game footage and slides. Premium doggo content at the end too; and what a joy to have this show back with Second Wind. Love ya Frost (and all at SW!)

Cold Take is the first show from this team that I really sunk my teeth into alongside Yahtzee's works. Both writers seem to have a knack for coming up with single sentences that embed several layers of proverbial meaning.
Honestly this whole thing has been a blessing in disguise, this is the first time seeing a Cold Take and it is amazing!

i don't think there is any disguise, it's more like the betrayal twist where the heros all band together away from the betrayers, except the heroes don't even have to do anything, just step aside as the foundation drops out from under whatever idiots own the escapist.
When I heard ZP was gone, I was terrified I lost Frost and everyone else. I had just found so many new comfort shows on the Escapist. So happy to find everyone on Second Wind ~~

This is why the better kings had court jesters that were allowed to make fun of the ruling class. A good jester could point at where the king was out of touch and not fear repercussions.
I don't know if this live-action noir aesthetic is gonna be the norm for this series going forward, but I really hope it is 'cause this is great. Really adds some unique spice to this series beyond Frost's amazing voice

ZP was my favourite, but Frost really came in strong with Cold Take, making some pretty thoughtful videos, and I could see him becoming a big part of Escapist... Then The Purge came, and I am so hapoy to see Frost move over with everyone else to Second Wind, where he can show his talent alongside legacy talent, and other new people to come. The channel has really come out strong. I also see a lot of promise in Design Delve, and hope that show does well too.
I saw Nick and Yahtzee hype up Frost on a podcast, but I was not ready for this. Amazing!
What a wonderful encapsulation of dysfunctionality. I've never listened to a Cold Take before, but the clever writing, genuine sentiments, and insightful observations have made me a fan.
Your point about climbing the corporate ladder and how it disconnects you from the real, day-to-day culture is spot on. It's like in gaming, you level up and get stronger, but if you're not careful, you can lose touch with the core gameplay, the reason why you started playing in the first place.

I’ll second what Dan says. All the videos are amazing food for thought and at the same time allow you to slow down for the 5-7 mins and get engrossed.
As someone who worked in HR (not in games) and had to take part in more than a few “mass layoff” situations this whole video rings so dang true for me.
Good on you for escaping The Escapist! Cold Take was the only show of theirs I was really watching anymore and I was bummed because I assumed it just wouldn't be around after all that happened. Imagine my face when I saw this on my feed!

I really think everyone who founded 2nd wind should write their own story somewhere while it's fresh. But I definitely did not expect a polished, ColdTake style lesson. Nicely done man.
So I don't work in the games industry at all, but that whole thing about climbing the corporate ladder and losing touch with the culture of the company/organization hit SO hard. As someone who does have their feet on the ground, I appreciate this and I wish everyone would heed it.

It's because the corruption of capitalism isn't exclusive, I don't think there's a single industry not stuck in these cycles trying to create infinite growth and it makes me hopeful for the future that despite all the suffering being created the culture from the workers is shifting to this realization and wanting better
Pretty much everything he said that wasn't specifically about the gaming industry applies to my work as well. As a department manager looking at the decisions corporate execs like to make, there's such a disconnect between what they think will work and what actually will work that it borders on incompetence. And the half hour zoom meetings every week to go over about 5 minutes of actual info that could have just been an email. And bringing in former execs from completely unrelated companies to manage stuff instead of promoting up from within. And buying truckloads of new merchandise for all the branches because "more variety means more $" and not listening to the branch managers that tell them there's no demand for a lot of the stuff they are buying, then turning around and griping at those branch managers asking why they have so much dead stock. It's goddamn infuriating.
I admit I had concerns that Frost might not make the transition. I'm incredibly hyped seeing where this is going.
It was crazy seeing 200k subscribers without actually having any *content* out yet. It's awesome seeing how well this is kicking off.

I don't tune in to watch Cold Take, I tune in to listen to it. Informative and entertaining to listen to while I'm checking my accounts, bills, social media, etc...
So glad that this series can continue. It was one of the most underrated on The Escapist. Hopefully with the new channel new viewers who previously only watched Yahtzee will now check out other videos.

I tried varied content from The Escapist before when I thought I should watch something else than just Zero Punctuation, then Cold Take became my favourite show on there, your silky voice and your critique of the industry is a delight.
Man literally gave folks the Manifesto and C.R.E.A.M. all in one go and that I gotta love and respect.
Never watched cold take before, but I wanted to support the channel and give it a try, and I'm so glad I did! The presentation, the truth youre preaching, the relatability. It's gorgeous. I'm totally hooked now, can't wait for more!

I love this! The close-up black and white camera work that references film noir. The hard boiled, deadpan delivery that sounds like it's just the facts even though it's an editorial. The quiet, sad blue jazz.

The vibe I get from this is BIG and so on point that it feels like a carpenter who hits the nail on the head. The tone or level of coolness displayed in this video shows a temperament that conveys the same feeling I have, and I understand. Great video!!!
You and Yahtzee have had your finger directly on the pulse of the industry for a long time now and I appreciate when creators don't bullshit me to keep things digestible to mass-market speculations. The business world runs on hype trains in boom and bust cycles that flat out refuse to acknowledge the forest from the trees. Thank you for taking a brave step forward to leave these outdated ways behind. I am excited to see where Second Wind takes things from here.
