    R.I.P Steve Byrnes :(

The thing that I think is awesome is that he chooses not to be a victim despite his injuries. He is solely focused on recovering, and being the opposite of who he was at Bristol with that Dale Jarrett incident 10 years ago.

I'm friends with Shaine and their family
Right now, hes been working on getting a licence again! I've seen him driving, and it's cool how it's all set up for him. I know he can do it. I tell him that I know, one day, he'll walk again. He's made so much progress! And I'm proud of him :)

A lot of comments that I see below seems to come from people with less than a grade school education. I have met Shane several times and he seemed to be a very strong, capable, and determined young man. Hope you're doing well, my friend.

NASCAR were right to ban him for life - and would have been right to keep it that way. I'm sure it's the most diificult thing imaginable to kick a habit like cocaine or heroin, but three failed tests over two years is enough, no matter what the redemption story. HOWEVER, I'm delighted that he completely cleaned up his act and found a career in USAC - apparently he was also looking into a fledgling Indy Lights career. He didn't deserve that crash right in the middle of his road to recovery.

Knowing this NOW, this changes my outlook on him a lot---he cleaned himself up and got a second chance in USAC, but then it ends in the worst possible way (short of losing limbs or dying).

While I don't like to say things about people I don't know, I can't respect someone like Shane Hmiel after the lame crap he pulled with Dale Jarrett at Bristol in 2005. Jarrett let him know how unhappy he was after Hmiel had wrecked him and Shane's response was to flip him off. Dale Jarrett may be one of the top 2 gentlemen to have ever driven in Nascar and for Shane to do that was nothing but disrespectful to a seasoned veteran..

NASCAR has rules just like every sport. Shane didn't follow them so don't blame NASCAR. Drivers know what they get in NASCAR so don't blame them.

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve read in a few months. Ever heard of personal accountability? So you think it’s mom and dads fault when some psycho shoots up a shopping mall? The real problem is people doing stupid things because they think there won’t be any consequences. Kudos to NASCAR for kicking him to the curb.
