Lax Obama-Era School-Discipline Policies Enable the Parkland Shooter An Obama-era policy designed to reduce the “school-to-prison pipeline” prevented police from using available tools could have stopped the shooting. Broward County had adopted these guidelines designed in part to limit law-enforcement involvement with students, even those who posed a threat.
The closer you look at the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., the more you realize that it was one of the most preventable significant crimes in recent American history.
We’re familiar by now with the government’s sins of omission - how it failed to act time and again in the face of evidence that the shooter presented a clear and present danger to the public.
But how about a sin of commission? An Obama-era policy designed to reduce the “school-to-prison pipeline” prevent police from using available tools could have stopped the shooting.
One of the greatest challenges in American public life is to end mass incarceration without endangering the public. How can reform efforts keep violent offenders off the streets while still decreasing America’s extraordinarily high prison population?
The tragic experience in Broward County teaches us how not to fix the crisis. Stopping the “school-to-prison” pipeline by simply refusing to arrest violent students carries with it unacceptably high costs.
Yesterday Paul Sperry of RealClearInvestigations published a comprehensive report that reached an explosive conclusion:
Despite committing a string of arrestable offenses on campus before the Florida school shooting, Nikolas Cruz was able to escape the attention of law enforcement, pass a background check and purchase the weapon he used to slaughter three staff members and 14 fellow students because of Obama administration efforts to make school discipline more lenient.
Overstatement? Perhaps, but it contains an important element of truth. In 2013, the Broward County school board entered into an agreement with multiple law-enforcement agencies - including the Broward County sheriff - designed to limit the number of on-campus arrests.
Obama education secretary Arne Duncan even highlighted Broward County’s efforts to reduce out-of-school suspensions and try alternative forms of discipline. Broward County was reportedly “one of 53 major school districts” to adopt Obama-administration guidelines designed in part to limit law-enforcement involvement in school discipline.
Sperry quoted Peter Kirsanow, a conservative member of the Commission on Civil Rights:
Broward County adopted a lenient disciplinary policy similar to those adopted by many other districts under pressure from the Obama administration to reduce racial “disparities” in suspensions and expulsions. . . . In many of these districts, the drive to “get our numbers right” has produced disastrous results, with startling increases in both the number and severity of disciplinary offenses, including assaults and beatings of teachers and students.
Sperry also wrote a comprehensive essay for the New York Post in December outlining how lax discipline policies where enabling a wave of violence against teachers and students. He detailed incidents across the country, including mass resignations of teachers after escalating assaults.
In local news reports at least one former Broward school-resource officer has spoken bluntly about the pressure not to arrest students and said that the number of resource officers was cut in half.
"We are the laughing stock of the world right now."
Recently retired @browardsheriff school resource officer speaks out because he says current officers are afraid to. Says there is a shortage of SROs, and pressure not to arrest troubled students like Nikolas Cruz

First of all, I am mad. I am mad that after all of these mass shootings in a country that is supposed to represent the bastion of what is right
regarding mankind, nothing has been done. I am a big believer in government, because without it we would have anarchy.
But regarding our protracted problems with guns, it is because our politicians are either spineless, ignorant or perhaps both.
Before I go on, I am making this statement: A common denominator in Sandy Hook, Parkland, Buffalo, Uvalde and many more has been
an offensive weapon of war. Enough is enough. Anybody who has advocated and continues to advocate for, or who has one of these weapons because of our stupid
misguided policies, you are complicit in every death and will continue to be in the next mass shooting. If you have an ounce of decency, you should be more than willing to surrender your weapon(s) of war.
People are justifiably saying that the cops in Uvalde should have been willing to sacrifice their lives in order to save the kids. Many of them were afraid to go
against the fire power of the shooter. Their reticence to confront the shooter in a timely manner cost lives. Lawmakers' reticence to act because of their
misguided interpretation of the 2nd amendment's abstract meaning have cost lives. If a person owns one of these guns and if he/she is a decent person,
he/she should be more than willing to sacrifice this weapon of war. If a cop should have been willing to possibly sacrifice his life even though he was afraid of the
fire power of an assault weapon, anybody who owns one of these guns should be willing to sacrifice the gun that you are able to own because
    of our feckless politicians.

Too many people have access to weapons and it's now just a matter of probability when the next shooting will take place.

For example on a Monday they may say " tomorrow we are having a fire drill", so we don't panic in the act. That being said, and I'm just guessing, that maybe they had let the students know about a practice drill the day before. Cruz probably heard this and knew it would fit his horrid plan, because with students knowing a practice drill occurring, they won't be quick to escape. That's probably why the shooting happened the same day a drill did. Im sure Cruz didn't have help by a staff member planning a practice drill. I think Cruz saw the opportunity.

Serve and defend. Those officers failed to perform their jobs. Do you think the officers were carrying BB guns? The Deputy under Israel is under a gag order right now. Why do you think that is? And, Israel knew about his deputy while he was on stage at the “town meeting”. Please stop being a little sheep. RIP for those children who were failed by MANY!

A shooter likes nothing more than to see a "gun free zone ". And in a place where our most valuable and loved things are. Our children. Our children are in a gun free zone most of the day when they are in school. It's almost as if this law was put into place do that criminals could commit a crime with little to no deterants at all. Makes absolutely no sense what's so ever.

@@oakleydavid7619 That’s what I’m saying, “all these shootings and nothing is done”waaawaa well why don’t we just put security guards where they should be? Aren’t these kids in danger of being kidnapped now? Even more so now that Epstein went down? Why is there no security anywhere? Why are the people who are listening to our every conversation and predicting all of these events doing absolutely nothing? I really don’t want them to do shit either, I’d rather us just stay armed and not have to be surveilled at all fucking times, But as things are, they could’ve stopped these attacks under the current laws that exist with complete impunity
