    Lately I’ve got absolutely nothing on the 2-bus and it’s made my mixes sound so much better. I bus groups of instruments for glue and level/gain staging and I find more clarity and just better overall tone with these decisions.

    Hello😀 back even again. This has become the first channel I chk out each day when I watch my updates. I feel dumb because as I told you (mr.mixbustv, don’t know your first name😊) before when I was here my first time I just judged you on your image and didn’t think this channel was special. But wow was I wrong. Your knowledge and your pedagogical approach you are just really one of the best teachers out there!! I learn something I can use or I should know. And now I see myself here all the time! Watching older videos, search for everything I haven’t seen etc. And even your English, ‘cause it isn’t your first language! Like me. You still manage to explain so well. Thanx a lot for sharing. I feel I should support you with some patron donation or bying something. I will I just have to save up a little. A musicians life is rarely something that makes you rich and being an upcoming musician/mixer it’s even harder. I have quit my job to to this all the time. I do take on some students now and then though. Just don’t tell the IRS. Actually I live in Norway and we don’t have IRS but we have something similar😂 enough from me. Just wanted to thank you! Kindest reg. @marcusdahl oslo/norway. Ps Sigurd Vongraven is a colleague of mine. If that’s your favorite music.

    Listening to this really helped me wrap my head around the way mixing audio works. I subconsciously knew this stuff but I can better compartment my thoughts after hearing it explained by someone more informed. Its easy to forget this stuff & end up chasing one's own tail.
    This is also why many times when you download a hip hop instrumental mp3 from a free mainstream producer mixtape, the beat is clipping horribly(because of the processing on the master fader/2bus trying to make the beat sound loud but not being properly re-adjusted in light of the vocals no longer being there). the only time they bother to do it right is when the instrumental comes from a single or they are literally selling an instrumental album.

    I Love this video...such a good question and answer. what I decided to do (When I want to do precision stem mastering) is save the 2bus chain, bounce the stems dry, And then apply it on the mastering project the same way it was on the mix project, And work on the mastering chain when I have the flexibility of tweaking the stems if needed without going back and forth to the mix.

  • @Dosxxx
    @Dosxxx Před 5 lety +6

    Hey man, love the videos!
    I have to jump in here though and let you know you're not right about the EQ when printing stems. You can leave any EQ on the mix bus and the stems will null with the full mix.
    Adding 5dB to on the master means the guitars get 5dB, drums get 5dB, etc etc. So when printing stems the guitars still just get 5dB, drums 5dB, etc. It doesn't add up as you suggest.
    Try it out.

      @jackalisland Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah, I found that part weird as well. Did the test myself: the mix and stems put together are identical (did a null test)

    Been trying to find a solution to this exact problem too, I write production music and stems are a massive part of the process as most editors will want them. I have been supplying stems without buss processing as you mentioned! Not ideal but the points you make (multiple counts of saturation etc) definitely sound worse because I've made the mistake of doing that haha! ..... great channel David :-)

    I've been dealing with stems and bouncing them back in a mix the past few days and how I've been pulling it off is like this. Print with my effects and aux. Bounce. Bring back in dial the aux back in and lift the wool off the vox with a couple more effects. It's been working for me.

    I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. I want to use the stems for live DJing. Traktor has a program made just for this but I would prefer to use my own mastering compressor. If anyone finds a solution please reply.

    i just use vca stems to locate high peaks of the bounced waveform of each group without any buss processing .. from my experience stay away from subgroups or stems processing .. it is all about perfect balance and panning + filtering resonance frequencies that are causing muddy mixes... I started to make good mixes because of that.. keep it simple less is more

      @@mixbustv maybe I am doing buss processing in a wrong way but even though I still didn't like it, I have tried many times still doesn't sound right . i still prefer using analogue gear only summing my main output to stereo channel on analogue console then routing it back to daw to add that analogue sound to the mix.

    Question: I'm a little new to hybrid mixing as far as using hardware as an insert. Do you just rerecord the new processed tracks with the inserts on and mute all the original tracks? What is your process for organizing the old vs processed tracks? I have 8out/8in which i mainly have different hardware compressors dbx160, 1176, la2a, ssl buss comp, a pair of pultecs eqs, and a couple fx units. Any tips or tricks on this subject would be great!

    What is unity gain. What is it for on the DAW mixers

  • @utsavghosh716
    @utsavghosh716 Před 3 lety

    See their will be situation where you will have to deliver a 16 track of your mix in order for them to make it 5.1 or any surround format as such ,where you even give your delays and reverbs in separate tracks so that they can use them in different channels in a surround format for theatre mix of the song .
    So eventually this thing will come up to you as an engineer , so big engineers sus as andrew are minimising the use of 2 bus processing to stay safe.
    Anyways
    Great work
    Really appreciate your work

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  Před 3 lety +1

      I don't like safe, safe is lazy in this case. I like best sound, if a different mix is needed for 5.1 purposes then we do a different mix, which will sound best for that purpose.

    I don't get why you would need to make the stems sound like "the mix". If the client wants "the mix" sound, it seems like they would just use "the mix". Right? What am I missing? Thanks! :)
