    Dam I can't wait until your England road videos!

    WOW! I can't wait to see your UK series, Phil! Hope it doesn't take too long to acclimate to driving on the left side of the road.
    There's something about a winding, twisting road through a heavily forested area that makes me want to get back out on the road. This video REALLY delivers!

      I've been practicing driving on the left by playing, "Euro Truck Simulator 2" a lot lately and driving in the UK area, just as a way to try to wire my brain to understand visually how the orientation should look, how to approach traffic circles (always look to the right in the UK as you approach the circle). Driving on the motorway the leftmost lane is the driving lane, and the inside lane to the right Is the passing lane, etc. So I think I'm prepared as much as I can be, but of course it will definitely be an adjustment, , I'll just need to expend a lot more mental energy while driving I bet, but one I think I ought to be able to do it and will adjust when I actually get behind the wheel. One important thing I've realized though is that in the UK, manual transmissions are the norm and automatic cars are more rare. However with all these adjustments I definitely will be spending the extra money to rent an automatic car (it costs a bit more), but I figure I don't want to make it even more difficult of an adjustment than it already is.

    Coincidentally I just received my park pass in the mail today, not sure how much I'll be able to use it this year, but should at least make it out to Elk Island a couple times anyway.
    Interesting to see the split roadway. Very similar to the Bow Valley Parkway in Banff.
    Have fun in Britain! My wife and I went back in 1998 to visit her relatives there. We flew 'direct' to Gatwick from Edmonton. I say 'direct' because we ended up turning around over Greenland and landing in Iqaluit. Someone on our flight had a heart attack. Just when the plane was ready to take off again, someone shouted, 'Stop!' Someone else was having a seizure. They ended up taking TWO people off the plane. By the time we got to London, it ended up being about 18 hours from Edmonton. By the time we got to my wife's grandparents near Gloucester, we were pretty beat! I never tried driving over there, I was freaked out just riding in the passenger seat of a car. Kept wanting to grab the wheel and get over to the right side of the road, lol.
    P.S. If you're crossing any streets remember to look RIGHT first.

      Yeah I like those split roads and that's exactly what it reminded me of too. I'm hoping my flight goes without delay. As for driving, I've been practicing a lot in the game, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and driving around the UK. I know it's not EXACTLY the same thing, but I figure it gets my brain "used" to the perspective and how things "should look", and like you mentioned, looking right especially as you approach traffic circles. (Instead of looking left at the few traffic circles that Winnipeg has). I figure I'll rent the car after I"m there a few days on the outskirts of London or one of the smaller surrounding towns so I can quickly practice and if I feel comfortable, I'll head onto the motorway. If I'm "freaking out" though I'll just immediately return the car rental and take the train to my next town :-). I'm pretty sure I can adjust though.

      oh and yes I'll be taking a similar "direct" flight to London Gatwick too, but from Winnipeg. The same Westjet service I think you took (only leaves and goes on Saturday nights).

      @highwaysbyways4281 Před 7 lety

      Actually, when we went it was on Canada3000. Many moons ago. I think WestJet was just doing domestic stuff back then, it was in its infancy back then.

    Wapusk National Park is also belonging to Manitoba, Riding is not the only one.

      ahh yes you are correct. That's a relatively new one and in a more remote area. :-D. It looks like you can't even get there by car I'm afraid.

    i've heard good things about Riding Mountain National Park. I read a Will Ferguson book about Canada a couple of years ago, and there was a chapter about that park.

    Wapusk National Park is in Northern Manitoba closer to Churchill.

    I dontt know if you've been through the park since this video, Phil; but the entire road through the park has been repaved, from south to north gate. It's so nice now.

    Hey, nice video. Maybe you should take a visit here in Price Edward Island sometime in the near future and do a tour of it.That would be a nice treat for the viewers.

    That's cool that you're going to go to England! And I had no idea that WestJet did international flights. Must be a new thing.

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  Před 7 lety

      Yes and believe it or not, they actually do DIRECT flights from Winnipeg directly to London (Gatwick Airport). So no changing planes needed for me. It's a new thing they only started recently. My Ticket cost just over $400 each way, $800 total (return). Getting the direct flight cuts a good 3-4 hours off the total time compared to going through Toronto/Montreal. My direct flight according to my ticket is just over 8 hours from Winnipeg to London. Because even though Toronto or Montreal is further east (close to the UK that way), it's actually takes you too far south. If you look at the Flight Plan, the flights actually make a sharp north-west path and fly over Hudson's Bay/Greenland and then swoop down south-east over Ireland (that's actually the fastest shortest straight line if you look at a globe or use the line tool on Google Earth), rather than flying due east. So heading south-east to go to Toronto/Montreal from Winnipeg actually is backtracking in one way (and you're not gaining any real distances, just wasting time). With the layover and waiting time, it would take 12 hours to get to London from Winnipeg if I had to go through a connecting flight.

      globalnews.ca/news/3164442/westjet-offering-fewer-flights-from-winnipeg-to-london-england/. There are only 10 flights this summer direct from Winnipeg to London. Fortunately that's what I booked and am on :-D

    However it isn't the only national park in manitoba, Wapusk National Park in Churchill is also in Manitoba, and the Polar bear capital of the world, very popular.

      Yup there's been a notable lack of road videos in our visual styles from the UK. I'll be there for a few weeks in July, I'm planning on having a car rental for 5-7 days and I'll try to get what I can. Hoping to drive to Manchester, Nottingham (I can imagine a cool Robin Hood themed video), The Peaks district, London of course, Cliffs of Dover, Stonehenge. These are just some of my ideas so far. Depending on how ambitious I am I might try to get Scotland as well. I just can't tell though how hard it is to drive around there yet (I have no sense of the scale of the place), so I won't know for sure till I get there and get a feel for the place.

      That'll probably be easier for American drivers in the UK than myself. I understand they also use Mile Per Hour speedometers and signs in the UK just like the US. That's another thing I'll have to get used to. Driving in France would probably be a lot easier for me. :-D

    Coming soon: Trans-Atlantic Phil!
    Btw, what are the main attractions of this park? I don't really see prominent mountains along the way.

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah despite the name, Riding Mountain National Park isn't actually a mountain park. The park is basically a large elevated area over the entire rest of the province. You get a good view of this massive difference from the north side coming south actually (not shown). Otherwise it's mostly a park of lakes and forest with various trails and other topography.
