The first cycle of chords is AbM7, CM7, EbM7. The melody itself is just G, B and D, you can add it as a higher note sometimes
The next cycle, that starts at 2:32 is BbM7, BM7, CM7, then BM7 and CM7 keep repeating, you can add the same way, Bb and B as the melody that repeats
On 5:23 Three chords are played, Bbm7 starting on Ab, Gbm7 starting on E , CM7 starting on G and BM7 starting on Gb and they also repeat, with the melody on F, Db , E and Eb.
As it is played on a synthesizer, there is a lot of spontaneous sound customization, so it may vary a little bit.
For whoever plays the keys. Time marks based on the original song.
Dope man, thank you! Alex 👊
Would you ever consider notation for Keep On by Alfa Mist? Its 10 minutes long but would love to see some of it explained. Maybe the 1 minute drum solo towards the end of the song. Thanks!
Yes please
My buddy transcribed this and I believe the drummer for alfa mist posted it on his instagram

Nice man, not a lot (or any) drum channels breaking cool music like this down. Black Focus is one of my all time favorites. Such an epic album. Yussef Dayes is just an animal on the kit.
Ah man, mine too! Definitely one of my biggest influences on the kit! Stoked you’re digging the vids my dude, glad to have you in the crew over here! Alex 👊
@@DrumHubTuition Glad to be here man! BTW, I just realized in that sweet live video, they end up cooking more like 158-160bpm! I Freakin cooking.

Yes Jimbo my dude! Let me know how you get on with the groove man, what a banger! Alex 👊
Before covid I rented a jam space with all my buddies, my drummer friend showed me this song and let me use her drum kit. I spent like 3 full days tryna learn this song and failed incredibly hard. Next time I have access to a drum kit I'm gonna watch this again and learn it the right way.
You're a beast drummer my dude, if ever you wanna a suggestion for a next video "Catch The Loop - Kamaal Williams" could be some wild shit. Keep these videos coming!
Ah man, it's such a hard groove to play for sure! Took me a while to build up the speed! You'll get it though man, keep pushing!
Ah man, I've tried to upload a Kamaal WIlliams cover before and the label blocked the video from youtube, so I'm a bit hesitant to teach one of his tunes incase I can't actually upload it haha. But maybe I could make a backup edit without the actual music as it would be a sick tune to do!
Thanks for watching man! Alex 🤜 🤛
Man this is a fantastic video and breakdown. I've never tried playing this, but listen to the song a ton and pretty much know I'll never make it happen haha. Great job. Yussef is killing the scene right now. I built a custom piccolo snare for him last year. Great guy.
Thank you dude, glad you dig it! Ah man, it took me a while to get this one down, you'll get it for sure
That's so sick dude, just checked your channel and your drums look super nice mate! Are you based in London?
Thank you! I’m in Colorado, USA, but U.K. is on list of places to go for sure. I’ve only got the one drum on CZcams. You can see more of my work on Instagram @ diamonddrumco

@@deandiamond5479 Nice dude! How is the music scene in Colorado? I'll check out your instagram for sure mate, would love to see some more of those snares!
Thanks a lot man, i’m glad to see someone finally uploading some cool stuff about Dayes. I’m insta subscribed after watching it. In which other ways can i support you?
Thanks a lot my dude, glad you're digging the videos and thanks for the follow on instagram too! I just use CZcams and Instagram man, so having your support on both is wicked! I'll be bringing out a new video every Wednesday at 12pm, hope to see you there mate! Alex
Really dig your improv thing at the end btw. That's basically the essence of playing drumnbass on the kit.. acting like your a little chopped up bits of hip hop drum loops being played at a really fast tempo. That's how that shit was made in the first place. Yusseff knows that and can play like that. You do it great too. Cheers!
Thanks mate! For real, Yussef is on a next lev! 🙌
Hey man this is really well made, and great mix on the kit too. Would love to see you break down some Machinedrum grooves or other electronic//funk/jazz style beats like this one, that's all i've been listening to and playing lately
Hey mate, thanks so much! I really appreciate that! Definitely so much fun recreating electronic sounds on an acoustic kit. You ever checked out those videos of Ian Chang on Reverb? Some sick concepts on that topic. I will check out Machinedrum for sure, thanks for the recommendation man!
nice
Thank you Andres mate, stoked you dig it! Let me know how you get on with it mate! Alex 🤜🤛

This was great! Now please do "love is the message" my maaaan
Thank you André my dude! Ah man, I might have to! Quite a few requests for that one and it definitely bangs! Thanks for watching mate! Alex 👊
Love your vids bro, you're way too underrated! Could you transcript Love is the Message by Yussef Dayes please? Keep up the good work m8 x
Ah thanks so much man, stoked you’re enjoying the vids! Yes mate, let’s do it! Alex 👊
Thank you so much man.
Do you know any other drummers like Yussef Dayes style with lot of improv?
Could you also do the one in which Yussef and Kamaal jam inside a van?
I would say, try to listen to Chris Dave, or Jojo Mayer whose project with the Nerve is like full impro for an hour and half. But in his precise style i would go for nate Smith, quick and a mental groove
Thanks mate, glad you're digging it! Emmanuel is on point with his suggestions, some other drummers I'm really into are Richard Spaven, Moses Boyd, Femi Koleoso, Mark Guliana, Kendrick Scott, JD Beck.
That Jam in the van video is a classic! The groove isn't too far from Strings of Light to be fair. More Yussef in future for sure dude!
Mandem killed dis
Thank you Derrick my dude, this one wasn't easy haha! Alex 👊
@@DrumHubTuition yeah bruv I hope I can memic this level of talent as I continue to learn. Appreciate all your work. Big up

Hey man! Have you heard the new tom misch and yussef album? Do you think you could do a beat breakdown of 'Lift Off' ? The drums are incredible. Hope you're well!
Hey my dude! Yeah man, sick album! Some serious grooves on there! If you go onto my channel, there's a video called 'What Kinda Music Full Album Beat Sheet' where I've notated 4 bars from every song on the album and done a little play along for each one. It's the second to last video I posted! Hope it helps and hope you're well mate! Lift Off bangs! Alex
@@DrumHubTuition I literally just found your video after I posted this comment hahaha. Thats so sick man nice one. Would you consider covering the whole song in future? Would be sick!
What's the style of drumming where you hit the snare on every beat or off beat called? like the drumming in this...
Hey Samuel! Ah man, I think that will depend a lot of on the genre the drummer is playing! If you search 'breakbeat' you might find some of the phrasing you are looking for though! Alex 👊
Can you do a tutorial on night rider? Tom misch and Yussef dayes
Hey my dude! I notated a beat from each song from the album, I have dropped the link below for you! Alex 🤜🤛

I need some help on this, I've been working on this groove for a few weeks now and am pretty consistent around 130 BPM and can creep up to 146 but my sticking starts getting sloppy. Any exercises to help me work on speed and consistency?
Hey my dude, thanks for your message! It's a really difficult groove for sure man, gotta give yourself some major props for pushing it up to 130 bpm already!
One thing I would say is that 146 is a big boy jump from 130, so don't feel like you need to push it straight up there, just go a little bit faster and loop it until you feel comfortable enough to take it up some more! For me, going up in 5 bpm stages works, until I get to the point where 1 or 2 bpm is enough of a difference.
If it's a sticking thing, I would try to work out which part is tripping you up and isolate it. For example, if it's the last beat of the bar where you get that overlap between 3 in the right hand and 2 in the left, just work on that part, try and observe your technique, stay relaxed, take the phrase and put it into other grooves that you are super confident with before returning to the full Yussef groove.
It can be a long process so if it takes weeks, months, years, that's totally cool man- Yussef is a master! I'm still working on this stuff myself dude!
Any other questions, just shout man!
Alex 👊
Any advice on speeding up the triple strokes on the hi hat? They're the main issue I'm having with this at the moment.
Hey Jacob! Ah man, they are super fast for sure! I would isolate the issue, just work on the groups of 3 on their own (in both hands so you keep them equal) and then I’d advise trying to work them into your every day playing. Keep working the sticking into grooves you already know how to play and gradually increase the speed. You could also work on uptempo bop if it’s your thing as your right hand will play the same phrase a lot of the time!
Just keep going with it man, it’s a long game! Hope that helps! Alex 👊
@@DrumHubTuition Ok thanks a lot man!
@@jacoblindsay4271 Let me know how you get on with it brutha! 👊
Could you cover harvey sutherland - i can see? Similar drumming
Yes mate, sick drums on that track! Might have to add it to the list! Alex
Drum Hub nice one lad, i’ll keep my eyes peeled for the video!
Fuckin beast mate
Such a solid groove man! Thanks for checking the vid, Alex 👊
are those accents rimshots? How do you make them sound so dry! Mine are full of overtones! Maybe dampening, but then I see yussef playing without dampening and still sounding dry
Hey man! Yeah the accents are rim shots! There’s a lot of factors to the sound, are you hitting your snare in the middle when you play a rim shot? What type of snare are you using? How is it tuned?
I am using muffling though here my dude, 2 pieces of moon gel so it deadens it down a lot!
Hope that helps, thanks for watching! Alex 👊
@@DrumHubTuition Thanks for the reply .I use a 14x5 maple snare! Can you give some advice on non muffled snare rim shots sounding drier?
Sick man! Make sure your reso head is cranked, both heads are in tune and hit your snare in the middle when playing a rim shot. I wouldn’t overthink using muffling though man, if you want a dry sound, it could be exactly what you need! Alex 👊
Sounds like something out of the Rick Latham book
Sick, I haven’t gone through that- you recommend it? Alex 👊
@@DrumHubTuition yes it's a good book , especially for someone like you who looks at the dynamic .....the secret to making them groove properly is to practice everything on the snare , if you make everything except the accents almost ghosted on the snare you'll have the right dynamics when you move your hands to where they are supposed to be on the kit ( the yellow cover one he wrote)
