Thanks for watching everyone! We are doing a limited-edition run of this ring. You can see it on my website here: patrickadairdesigns.com/products/superconductor-with-rose-gold-liner
No thank you for making the video. I don't think one realizes the hard work and creativity that goes into one of these beautiful rings until you see the video. You are an amazing artist. Thank you.
Hey, Patrick. I like how it turned out, however the fit between the gold and the superconductor could have been tighter. If you make the inner diameter of the outer ring just a tiny little bit smaller, than the outer diameter of the inner ring, and you put the inner ring into liquid nitrogen, the metal will shrink significantly from the cold, and you could just drop it into the outer ring and wait for it to warm up, and it would get really tightly stuck inside.
Old Machinist here. Beautiful design. I like the blend of materials. Just an FYI. Those are inserts not bits. I might suggest you use a piece of hard rubber instead of your finger when polishing your material in the lathe. After 40 years in a machine shop and working with heavy equipment I still have all my digits. So take that for what it is. Be safe Patrick and keep up the good work!
Beautiful ring Patrick. My mums wedding ring is antique rose gold that my dad brought for less than £50 about 40 years ago. It’s now valued around £3k and still looks like new. I wanted it as my wedding ring when I married but I can’t wear gold. Despite it containing copper it still causes a reaction and after a while it makes my finger red, itchy and eventually causes blisters. So now it’s just a valuable accessory in my jewellery box! ☹️ Would love to see you do more titanium based rings and different designed rings...
Another tip for a tighter fit, this time lowtech: Cut the blanks half a mil longer than you need. Cut the liner just a little bit wider, in diamter, than the shell. It should not fit in there at all. Bevel one outside edge of the liner and counterbevel one inner edge of the superconductor, then line them up and press them together. The gold will conform comparatively easily, you can grind away the bevels used to match them and have a really tight fit. If you use a hammer you can flare the liner, chuck the steel plates in a vice and the part between them. You could make a simple joining jig with 2 (not to thin) plates and 4 rods in the corners so the plates always run parallel if you produce this type of item on a regular basis.
I would have really enjoyed seeing you attempt a friction weld between the two pieces. Basically, you rotate one of the two pieces under considerable force, and as the two pieces expand from the heat due to friction even more heat is poured into the contact point melting the two metals. This melting effectively wields the two pieces permanently without any chance of separation. It can be tricky to figure out how to do it well, but it is far more reliable, and in some cases can create a visually interesting blending of the two contact materials if you were to grind down to the transition point.
I would really love to have this as a wedding ring, however I am allergic to nickel really bad. Does this have any trace metals in it besides what you list it as on your site? Niobium/Titanium/Copper/RoseGold?
You should look into making rings out of Soviet era orange bakelite. I have a engagement ring made from the bakelite from a Geiger counter box and one made from the magazine of an ak74 rifle. Would be interested to see what you could do with the material.
This material is fantastic. Could you use it for the middle portion of a ring and the outside made with tungsten? That would be best looking and most durable ring ever
I really enjoy watching your videos mate, it is so interesting to see all the different techniques and workshop tooling that is used to make these hand crafted pieces you have done. Really cool stuff mate, Cheers!
if you want to get an even better friction fit, you can try thermally expanding the outside band and/or cryogenically contracting the inside band. It'll give you a little bit more breathing room when it comes to getting the right diameters for a press fit, and it'll give you an even stronger friction fit that may not even need any adhesive.

I'm a new subscriber. I've been watching your videos non stop the past few days. I was wondering. Have you ever made a ring from Lord of the Rings or would you ever make on in a video in the future?
As much as I'd love to see that, it seems like he's way more into just machining work, and the one ring would be a lot of hands on work. I doubt he's going to unless he's offered a lot of money by someone commissioning it.
Beautiful ring, and would love to have it as my wedding band! To bad I already blew my budget on my fiancees' ring. Have a feeling I'm not the first guy to do so.

Dude I don't know what your hard on is for superconductors but its time to move on. It's getting really old.
Thanks for such a nice comment, I appreciate it :)
Lol sorry
I already have! Search “lapis glowstone ring”
Put the inner material in the freezer and heat expand the outer. Much tighter fit
Exactly, or use dry ice or liquid nitrogen.
Was about to say the same
yep, I always use this trick for pressed wheel bearings.
Yep was going to say the same thing dry ice is easy to get ,gold in dry ice superconductor in the oven at around 250-300 stick together done .
Liquid Nitrogen or dry ice
Wow an incredibly beautiful ring made!
