  • BIG CULTURAL STORY: Nfor Sandys Eyong returns from Ekpe Bush
Initiation rites are a natural and a necessary part of the Ekpe association as are arms and legs natural and a necessary extension of the human body. In April 2010, Nfor Sandys Eyong entered what is really an encampment where elders lectured him about the true meaning and the embodiment of the culture of the clan society. Outside the village, in an isolated place (called the bush), initiates, together with members of the same Ekpe house, lived in seclusion for seven days (the duration is different in each occasion). He submitted to tests of endurance, forgiveness, courage, tolerance, civil rule ,intelligence, and individual respect for humanity with the underlying goal of carrying on tradition and maintaining cultural law and order in the community. These rites are critical to individual and community development, and it should not be taken for granted that people automatically grow and develop into responsible, Ekpe members. The practice is centuries-old and in order to produce a society that is focused on the best interest of the community requires the participation in these procedures designed to produce community-oriented responsible adults. We posit that the solution to our deep-rooted problems is to learn and apply the fundamental philosophies and principles that have created a harmonious Ekpe cultural association.
To summarize, After spending at least seven days in the bush, he has been groomed to join our cultural kinsmen as a true custodian of our culture, a provider of education, morality (Ethics) self discipline and endurance, and law maker and enforcer of the first order.
