- 194LL Bulbs Were Used To Replace Burnt Out Ones.
Replacing the burnt out dashboard light bulbs on a Toyota Corolla is something you can do yourself in a fairly short amount of time. This can save you a costly repair bill and won't cost you more than the price of a few bulbs. This video walks you through all that is necessary to get the job done quickly and easily! The procedure outlined here is applicable to model years 1990-2002, with very little difference in the required steps.

Stan, I have seen THOUSANDS of these types of videos, but the way you did it is GREAT. Sometimes the recorder will assume that the person watching understands everything, but you have done a FINE job of explaining what needed explaining, and NOT explaining the trivialities of the job. You explain things the way I do. I appreciate that. Thanks.
And Thank You, John! I appreciate the feedback. I know I need things explained a certain way to me to get the point across, and I hope I'm doing the same. Thanks for watching!
@@HowSkills great video, I appreciate it! I did just like you said on my 2001 Camry Solara, but when all done it didn't work. The only thing I didn't do that you did was detach the cables first, could that have caused the dashboard to no longer light up? Btw, the other lights work PRDNL, ABS, check engine etc. I appreciate any feedback you can give.

My wife has been dealing with this issue for FAR too long, and this video was so clear and easy to follow. thanks so much for making it.
You're welcome, and I hope it helped fix the problem for your wife.
for anyone wondering that is a type 194 T10 bulb. the smaller lights are 74 bulbs. I left the bulb condoms off when i did this, it lights up more white instead of green however it makes it a bit more bright.
Thanks for that, Walter!
Thank you that’s exactly the information I was looking for. I’m trying to replace all the lights in my wife’s car
Great video pal! I couldn't have asked for more concise & detailed step by step directions! The economically challenged thank you!
+John Kevin Landry You're welcome - I'm glad it helped. And thank you for watching!
Worked on my 2002 Toyota Corolla! Saved me at least $100. Thanks!
That's awesome, Bardia! Glad to hear it - I know it saved me a lot of money by doing it myself, too. Thanks for watching!

Great video! I have a 1999 corolla and I just changed my lights the exact same way and it was successful! Thanks very much! Awesome work!

Yea it really does! Thanks again!
Thanks for commenting this, my dashboard lights went out and I have a 99 corrolla too
Followed this video to the tee -- everything works great! Thank you!!!
Awesome - glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
I'm pretty critical of many youtube videos as they are often absolutely terrible, incorrect info, first timers who don't know squat trying to teach others, horrible photography, the list goes on and on but you seem to have nailed it. I can't find one word of criticism and anyone who has any mechanical aptitude whatsoever should be able to do this. It was truly a pleasure to watch and very easy to understand. You should give lessons to most others on youtube!!!! I'm doing my corolla tomorrow. Thank you.
I appreciate your saying that, and I’m glad to be able to help. The main thing is that you’re willing to tackle this yourself and you’re going to save some money. Can’t beat that. Thanks again for the kind words and thanks for watching!
Going to be trying this soon. All hopes it goes well. Looks much easier than I thought.
Excellent guide, very concise.

Thanks for the video, it was really well explained and the instructions were very helpful 😁
Great...glad to hear that! It’s a great way to save some money by doing it yourself.
Excellent video. Very well done. I'm not a car guy at all so this is going to help me very much as I make this fix on my car. I only watched it once, and don't even feel the need to watch it again because the process was explained well. thanks!!!

Thanks, I’m 15 and I’m working with my grandpa. He has a customer who has the entire right side of the dashboard lights burnt, so I gotta replace them. Cant wait to get started!
Sounds like a great project for you, and one that will make the customer very happy! Thanks for watching.
@@HowSkills alrighty, the customer delayed the job til after thanksgiving, so I had to wait. Gave me more than enough times to comprehend the video well. I did it! Thank you so much😃 My grandpa is asking how much I should charge for labor. It wasn’t challenging or hard, thanks to the amazing video. The bulbs were 99 cents and I spent 20 minutes on the job. Do you have an estimate of how much I should charge for labor? Thanks!
Great with instructions. Thank you
THANK YOU NO EXTRA TALKING GOT RIGHT TO THE POINT
Thanks for watching!
Great how to, just did this to mine and worked perfectly!

This is one of the best repair videos I've seen. Thanks for posting!
BTW, I checked the laws here in Michigan and didn't see anything saying it's illegal to drive at night without instrument panel lights. (Not that I would want to.) :-)
Thanks for watching! And from what I've looked at since this video, I don't think it's actually illegal in very many, if any, states. Just read some cautions about safety, and what law enforcement might think if they pulled you over for something, and they walked up to a car with a totally dark interior. I know it felt weird at night to not know my actual speed, or if I was getting too low on gas, so I had to get it taken care of as soon as possible. Hope the video helped!
Great video..and a huge help..TY

Awesome, going to have to do this for my fuel gauge. Any clue what happens if you leave the color covers off? Does that make the light white?
Yes, it will make the lights shine white, so really no harm done. You just won't have the original colors showing up on the dash. The covers can get brittle over time, so they could even rip when you try to take them off the old bulbs, or put them on the new lights. So, you might not even have a choice about it. Thanks for watching!
Question, if u decide to change all the lights in the panel, can I use that same light bulb size for all of them? I noticed some of those black light bulb covers look bigger and some look smaller
beautiful i will get my corolla 2000 done right way lol...thx
Jordao Teixeira Yeah, it’s one of those fixes that at first you might think it could be a big hassle, but it’s really not too bad. You can do it!
Very helpful and explained well. Also helpful would be to have known what type/size bulbs are used and where they're located.
Good point - I should have included that information. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I think thats a t10 bulb. The now come in an LED variation so you can have a brighter dash.
Thanks, Cyril. I would definitely get the LED bulbs to replace the old ones. I put affiliate links for eBay & Amazon to searches for these bulbs in the description of this video.

Stan, Thank you. I believe I saw the fuel gauge still up. Is it possible that it does not work ( as mine, 06/2019)? Could it be that the magnetic bits damaged some area of the dashboard circuit board that has to do with the fuel gauge? Or was the key still in the ignition? I have heard of magnets damaging even computers. Will you please show how to fix an stacked fuel gauge and non working speedometer gauge? Both work during cold weather in Florida and cool nights in summertime so what could else could it be? I did watch a video of somebody showing how the wiring covers under the hood get burn due to the excess of heat in Florida and now I am going out to check that first and then the fuses. Many thanks again.
The fuel gauge still worked, and I did still have the key in the ignition. And I’m sorry, but I’m not familiar with how to fix the stacked fuel gauge and speedometer. But thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!
Great vid! Is the speedometer fuse also accessed from the same place?
what is the size of the main light bulbs? the big one which is tinted?
Your video is good and i was able to replace the lightbulbs on my own! BUT!! my lights on my dashboard are still out and I even check the fuses. I really don't know what is going on :c
Is this the same procedure to use if I need to remove the "glass" that are infront of the instrument panel?
The reason I'm asking is because my rpm needle jumped under the little "pin" that is holding it on 0 when the car is off.
Yes this should give you access to be able to remove the clear plastic covering over the instruments. I’ve never removed that part before, but I believe it’s just a matter of removing a few screws or clips from the edge of the panel.
I noticed that your temperature gauge wasn’t moving . And the same thing happen to me when I switch my radio for an after market one. Any ideas to fix it ?
Sorry, but I don’t know an easy fix for that one. I’m going to research that.
Hope you have something for a 2003 corolla too
I am from Egypt and your page is very good. Please answer my question thankyou put How to replace bulbs in dashboard Toyota Corolla 2006
Is the fuel door sign supposed to be lit? I have a 2001 corolla ce I can't recall.
To be honest, I don’t remember. I don’t have that car anymore, so I can’t check it for you. I’d guess that it is supposed to be. Sorry I couldn’t help.
Are there only 3 x 194 size bulbs for the main light on the instrument panel ? I read on some website mentioned there are 4 x 194 bulbs for the main light on the panel. If you don't mind please kindly help to verify how many 194 bulbs are needed. Thanks
I honestly don't remember, but I believe I bought four, so I would play it safe and buy four, as they are relatively inexpensive anyway.
What bulb replacement did you use for the gas gauge? It i smaller than the others on the instrument panel. None of my local parts stores do not have that info.
I believe those were T5 (or 74) size bulbs.
Are those 194s for the overall illumination of the dash?
Obrigado.
De nada!
Thanks for the video. Got me thinking what's to stop someone from replacing cluster with a lower mileage car?
Hmmmm...good question!
Thank you for the information. Will be fixing mine tomorrow
I have the same vehicle and this was very helpful. My question is what are the size of those bulbs.
I used Sylvania 194LL (Long Life), 14v, 3.8w bulbs that I bought at AutoZone. Those were the bulbs that were recommended for my vehicle in their system. Hope this helps, and thank you for watching!
Sylvania 194 you can get at O'Reilly's same size bulb for license plate,
+Kevin McGrath O’Reilly’s is great. We have one in town and they’re very good to work with - they’ll do anything to help you out when you’re needing something for your vehicle. Thanks, Kevin!
Good
Thanks for watching!
Attempting to do this tomorrow since mine are also blown out in my 97 Corrolla. Two things: 1) What if your car doesn''t have a steering column adjustment option? Will it be a problem popping out the center console? 2) Do we need to disconnect the battery first? I've heard if you don't it could possibly set off the airbag while you're working on it.
You should still be able to maneuver the center console piece out - it's just easier with the column adjusted down and out of the way. To be on the safe side, I would go ahead and disconnect the battery. I honestly didn't, but now that you mention it, I think it's a good precaution!
You were right. Even with a steering wheel in the way I was able to get everything removed, replaced and re-assembled. It's just a really tight fit and you'll need several different sized screwdrivers...at least I did.
+SpideySensei72 Great! These kind of things aren't always the easiest, but it beats paying somebody else to do it.
I have a 94 Toyota Corolla. Which bulbs will I need and do you know how many . Mines look like it’s only one bulb working on each of the circle one so I think all of them need to be replaced
This is awesome! I need to replace lights for speedometer. Do you know if I can get the bezel and cluster out if I don't have a tilt steering wheel? I'd rather not unscrew and lower the steering column. thank you! I have a flashlight stuck on my dash to see at night! ha ha Time to replace the bulbs!
Yes, this can still be done withour having to lower the steering wheel, and here's a link to another video that shows how someone did it on their Corolla: czcams.com/video/x5ykET2mdsE/video.html
@@HowSkills Sweet! Thanks for confirming and the additional link. Mine's a 2001 Corolla so it should work.
@@HowSkills Okay but the link to the video shows a 93-97 Toyota Corolla.
@@greetingsfromchilliwack5702 Yes, sorry, but that was the only one I could find that seemed relevant. It does at least show how someone was able to remove the bezel on a Corolla without an adjustable steering column. Hopefully that will get you headed in the right direction.
Can this OEM bulbs be replaced with LED's with any problem?? Great video...Thank You
Yes, the LED bulbs will work just fine as replacements, and are really the best way to go. Thanks for watching!
Thank You, Stan for information..WILL GIVE THAT A TRY....
Good deal - it can definitely save you some money by doing it yourself.
great video, can change the light bulbs to led??
Yes you can! And they’ll last longer.
Do you know where the fuse for the cluster light is located?
I believe that one is either number 18 or 24 in the fuse box on the lower section of the dashboard on driver's side - yours might be behind a small tilt down storage pocket. I don't have that vehicle anymore, but I believe that's the correct one.
Does anyone know the official name of that black plastic piece you have to remove before getting to the actual dash?
I think it's called a bezel. But, I could be wrong.
Michael Hittu I'm interested also. Mine broke when trying to remove
Stan where do i get those bulb green sleeves.when i replace mine i just put the new ones and dash light look white i dont like it but i dont rember what happened to my OEM bulbs
You can get them on Amazon or at some of the auto supply stores. Search for 194 bulb covers, or T10 bulb covers and you should see several choices on Amazon.
@@HowSkills thank you very much your a lifesaver cuz i don't like those led kind
Great video. You made it easy. One question though. Do the bulbs need those thin plastic covers? Mine were kind of dry rotted and didn't come off in one piece. It's a '99, so I guess it's not so shocking that after 20 years they might not be in great shape.
No, they don’t need them, they just add color to the light they give off. You can buy new covers if you want them, but without them, your dash lights will just give off white light. Some of mine were brittle too!
@@HowSkills actually, I just bought orange replacement bulbs. Problem solved. Lol.
@@HowSkills Those little bulbs though! Omg. Even with my bifocals AND a lighted magnifying glass, I couldn't tell if any were blown out. Lol. I'm thinking of just replacing them all to be on the safe side. Lmao.
I replaced some too that weren’t burnt out just to be safe so I wouldn’t have to do it again right away.
Okay so I just change the dashboard lights in my 99 Corolla went to Canadian tire here in Toronto Canada the guy at the counter looked up for me but they didn’t anything in there system for the dashboard light to I went to alie with bulbs I picked up the sylvania 168 and the 194 long life the one that I used was the 168 and it works well
Nice - good to know! Thanks for sharing that.
Thanks, just disabled my abs light to pass inspection...
Glad you were able to pass!
Thanks for the video I have a 2000 Corolla CE that the turn indicator went out, so this'll be helpful. Also, off topic but what do ya mean ignore the ducks? Rubber ducks are awesome, lol
You are right...rubber ducks awesome and they deserve all the recognition they can get!
Thanks currently doing this on my 98 Corolla just don't know how to put the steering wheel a bit down ( I'm 15 first car)
I’m not sure that all models of the Corolla had an adjustable steering column, but if yours does, there should be a lever on one side of it that you can flip that allows it to be moved up and down. If you can’t move it, you can still get the job done, but it’s a little more awkward to get to some of the screws.
The lever is most likely on the under side of the steering column.
@@HowSkills yeah I got it done already thanks for the video it was practically the same just without moving the steering wheel I got ice blue lights instead
All my dashboard lights work but could I buy Led replacements for the dashboard?
Absolutely! There are LED versions of the 194 bulb available that will give you even longer life.
I have an Toyota Avensis 1997-2003 UK spec. the dashboard looks very similar. I guess as the Avensis replaced the Corolla most of the parts and descriptions are the same?
Should be very close. Maybe some small differences, but I would think basically the same overall. That has been the case with some other Corolla variants.
I wanna change all my leds for the cluster and heat control to change their colour .How many T5 and T10 leds I have to buy?
For the instrument cluster, I believe you'll need 3 T10 and 14 T5 bulbs. The Low Fuel Light also takes a T10, if I remember right. Not certain, but I believe the Heat Control bulb is a T5.
Does this work with a 1998 chevy geo prism??
I honestly don't know that for a fact, but I'm thinking that it would be very similar. It was basically the same vehicle as the Corolla. Sorry that I can't tell you positively, but I don't have experience with that.
Is it kinda of the same thing on a Toyota corolla, 2004
Can I do this with a 2006 Camry?
I'm sorry, but I honestly don't know for sure if the same exact procedure would apply. I'm sorry I can't help with this, but thank you for asking!
I have a 1998 Toyota Corolla I want to attempt to do this myself . What kind of bulbs should I get ?
Looks like you could use either 194 or T10 bulbs. I'd go with the LED versions for longer life. Good luck - you can do it!
Stan Cravens thank you ! The amazon ones you linked the description right ?
Stan Cravens thank you so much! I just ordered the amazon ones. I’ll let you know how it turns out ur directions seems simple enough.
Yes, those should work! Yeah, it just takes some time and patience getting everything apart and back together again, but it saves a lot of money over paying a garage or dealership to do it.
Mine is a 2010 matrix how do I change the bulbs
I have a 1996 toyota corolla. I took out the speedometer cluster out just to clean it. I put it back and some of the bulbs burnt out. What could be the reason. thank you.
Not sure, but could’ve been that some failed during the process and jostling of removing the panel, having been weakened already over time.
