  • What is my life like in Chiang Mai Thailand? Am I happy with my decision to move here? How have I managed to do it? Halfway through my current Visa (and CZcams series) I take a moment by the Ping River to reflect on the journey.

I have retired and currently live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on a Non Immigrant OA (Retirement) Visa. The videos I upload are a record of some of my experiences here.
I publish a video ever Thursday (Thai Time). Thanks for Watching

For those who are interested in this sort of thing I am currently filming these videos with a GoPro 9 with a media mod, sometimes using a tripod, but mostly hand held. They are edited using Nero Video

I am glad you enjoyed the video. For me the move has been a very positive thing, but not everybody has that experience. I had been visiting Thailand since 1999 so it was not moving to somewhere completely new for me, although I have a friend here who did that and he is also very happy. In the end you have to live the life that makes you happy if you are lucky enough to be able to do so.

You sound very content! I retire next year and have a 30 year relationship with Thailand (my Thai daughter is 26). We have a house in the UK and Thailand and we presently spend 6 months of the year in Thailand and head back to the UK for the spring/summer/autumn. We will head back to Thailand in a couple of months and next year will be the big year where we make decisions about the house in the UK, etc. I really don't understand why people want to work in retirement, make businesses in Thailand in retirement, etc; for me its a great opportunity to relax, enjoy life, travel in SE Asia, etc. After all those years building up that pension pot surely its time to enjoy it? So I am the same page as you. I enjoy your chilled videos so do keep making them!

Hi Alastair, Indeed I am very content, and consider myself very fortunate to be able to live this lifestyle.
Your connection with Thailand goes back a little further than mine. You must have seen some big changes from your first visit. I know I have in the 25 (approximately) years since my first visit. Before the study tour I had no thoughts about traveling in Thailand, or for that matter living here! It was quite a happy accident. Good luck with putting your retirement in place.

Enjoying your reflective, simple vibe and the insights you're sharing in this video. Where else did you visit around TH before selecting CM. Very curious how you related to other cities and locations you scouted out before selecting CM. I'm visiting CM next week. If you're open to it, would love to invite you for a casual lunchtime chat. (No weirdo here, just a Californian---and overly busy educator---looking for other options in the future to downshift greatly.)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes I'm happy to catch up for lunch and a chat, I am heading out of town on the evening of the 6th for a little while, so it would need to be before that. I had a look at Hua Hin, Auttaya, Kanchanaburri, and Pitsanulok; and of course Bangkok, before deciding on Chiang Mai.

@@52weeks52 Alright! July 3rd, 4th or 5th will work for me. Should we continue to just communicate here or should we email to arrange meet-up details? I'll be staying around the old city area, but can meet wherever is most convenient for you. Looking forward to the chat!

What about the Chiang Mai nightlife scene Kevin! Don’t you ever venture out after dark! The bar scene is a very large part of the culture in Thailand 🇹🇭 let’s get some raunchy stuff on the channel, your views will rocket 😊 let’s keep the general sightseeing to daytime vlogs 🙏😊🇬🇧

      Hi Martin
I do get out at night a bit. For a meal, to meet up with friends or have a wander in one of the many night markets. The cool of the evening can be a great time to explore in Thailand. There are a couple of bars that I enjoy (Cando Bar and Made In Chiang Ma bar) going to for a drink and a chat, or a game of pool (and other bar games). But filming at night and in bars can be a bit tricky with lots of copyright music playing and challenges with light levels, which is why you don't see much of it on the channel.
