would you say that the Dobot Magician is good for manufacturing or do you think it should only be used for educational use?
It is intended for educational use, but might be suitable for limited process development or production use. For extensive production use a higher end model might be a better choice. Higher end models come at a higher price though.

Hi Paddy, thank for visiting my channel and sorry for the late response. I have been quite busy with other activities and the family, so I have not been able give the Dobot the time that i deserves. I hope to have more time in the near future to do some nice projects with it. If I have anything worth posting I wil share it on youtube.

Thanks for the video dude. Could u tell me what u think of the Dobot's precision so far? I'm in the market for a robot arm, and this looks much better then those arduino based robotic arms.
It is in a different league when compared to cheaper servo based arms. The motions are smoother and the arm has a relatively large payload of 500 grams. It is claimed to have a position repeatability of 0.2mm( I do not have equipment to verify this at home). The accuracy seems to be sufficient for most pick and place tasks. I have also done some 3D printing with it. There you can see it does not quite reach the precision and acceleration of a dedicated 3D printer, but the dobot is a much more versatile piece of equipment.

Can the Dobot Magician 3D print wirelessly (i.e. SD card?)
my observation for the product itself that this robot arm use some kind of stepper motor with maybe NEMA 17 size, this robot can be programmed with teaching mode which those stepper motor is supposed to have encoder (so basically it's closed-loop system like typical servo but the motor type is stepper). i visit Dobot website but can't really get detail technical information regarding this, can you really tell me does my observation correct?
Hi Ilham, thanks for commenting. I think your observations are correct. The system is indeed a sort of closed loop system. The motors are indeed Nema 17 steppers and each axis has an encoder for position feedback. I am however not sure if "regular" closed loop steppers are used or if Dobot uses a separate encoder. Have not opened the body so I can't be sure. Whatever system they use, it seems to work fine.

@@uptimefab7412 when you use teaching mode did you feel the resistance (detent torque)? because when you move the arm probably you supposed to rotate the stepper too
There is actually very little resistance when using the teach button. It might decouple the wires to the steppers but also might even have a mechanical clutch. It doesn't feel like you are rotating the steppers when moving with the teach button but I could be wrong. Interesting questions! Makes me want to disassemble the entire thing, but not sure if that is a good idea.

Can it do 3D printing without the computer?
Do you know what the maximum force is? I was wondering if this might be used for physiological biomechanics.
The maximum payload is specified as 500 grams so the axes controlling the joins should be able to cope with this much weight, in the worst case position. For the axis in the base, which rotates the entire arm I am not sure how much force it can handle, but this is the least critical for payload, unless you are trying to push objects tangential to this axis. Hi, thanks! The button on top of the forearm is used for teaching. It logs position for all axes.
Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately the stepper motors do not release as we try and move the arm around and then push the button. Other than that it works slick.
If you press and hold down the teach button in the teach and playback mode, all the steppers should release. If not, there may be a loose connection or another issue. In that case it is probably best to contact Dobot support, in my experience they are very responsive.

I have used the dobot a couple of times for 3D printing. In my experience 3D printing using the dobot takes more effort than a regular printer to get good results. The base and glass plate need to be on a very flat surface, fixed in place properly. Setting nozzle height for first layer has to be repeated before a new print when not using a fixed setup for 3D printing. Also the default printing speed is 20 mm/sec, which is very slow. I think the low speed is to reduce vibrations. In the samples I have printed I had issues with gaps in the layers. Changing extrusion ratio, sprint speed, temperature and spring tension did not improve things much. I have not used the 3D printing feature since the initial problems. Having said this, I would like to complete the root cause investigation, since the videos made by Dobot show some nice looking parts, so it should be possible to get good results. When I have some more information available I will share the results, in the mean time I hope this information was useful. Robin
Hey thanks for that mate. I should be reviewing one of these some time this month. I own an Anet A8 3d printer which is practically a labour intensive cheap solution to 3d printing so I'm hoping the knowledge I've received from working with this printer will allow me create the perfect conditions and settings to get a desired print quality. Of course the rigidity of the structure could pose an issue as you said, due to the vibrations caused by the motors so i guess it'll be fun to figure out how to optimise the robot arm for 3d printing. I'll also be making a custom fan attachment that will hopefully also improve the quality. Subscribe to my channel if you want so that you can be alerted when I've uploaded the video. Rahiel

It's ok, until you actually want to start programming it. The firmware is terrible: it is losing commands, gets stuck randomly without any apparent reason etc. There is no trajectory planning and the higher level features of the api (like inverse kinematics) are extremely buggy (the python wrapper contained even some syntax errors, which means it was never tested). After all the struggle, I gave up on the official firmware and plan to reset it with open-dobot and ramps.
How was open-dobot and did you try ROS?

Hi, the software is quite good with enough options for manually controlling the dobot or automate the dobot using script or blockly visual programming. Too many details for the comments, for now I would recommend downloading the manual:
