Exactly! I wonder how often the Galindas get into the song with the intention to make their Elphaba break character 🤣 Must be such a fun scene to perform.
@@lonelylittledot if you watch Lindsay Mendez's Fly Girl vlog (I think that's where I heard/saw it from), they give a lot of freedom in that scene for Glinda. And in general, the producers/directors of Wicked always want the Elphaba and Glindas to make the character their own, instead of trying to be something that they think the producers/directors want. I think that's one of the biggest reasons why people always have their own different favourite Elphaba/Glindas! (and Fiyero of course) And it is true about Glinda/Galindas trying to make Elphabas break character in those scenes hahaha I think I heard it from some interview of Katie Rose Clarke or somewhere else like Stars in the House with Seth Rudetsky & James in the interview where Katie Rose Clarke and Lindsay Mendez both star in

That’s the 1st time I’ve ever seen an Elphaba grab the wand at all, and the fact she did a finger gun afterwards was hilarious to me!!!😂
My favorite two moments here have to be 1) Fiyero taking a step after Elfaba to apologize. I always thought that line was meant to be a little flirtatious, with no intended malice, but Elfie is offended. Knowing what we eventually learn about Fiyero's character him having a moment of discomfort over having upset someone seems appropriate. 2) The second was Galinda having a moment of hesitation with the hat. Galinda isn't initially portrayed as an especially kind or tolerant person, but that usually comes from a place of self centeredness. She is pursuing her goals and doesn't much care about the impact it has on others. The hat thing is meanness for the sake of meanness. Any clues that Galinda isn't a total mean girl is I think the right way to go.
Well said! I never saw Fiyero's line as flirtatious (like the idea, though!), but not as mean-spirited either. I always thought it was just a speaking-before-he-thinks kind of situation - after all, she had just yelled at him for, as he sees it, no reason; so it would make sense to me that he would instinctively respond with a teasing comment.
Kristen Chenowith's final show, that version of Popular is an absolute HOOT (and that For Good is highly emotional OH MY GOD)... and then I just love Kara Lindsay being absolutely chaotic (I've loved her since Newsies, she's just wonderfully weird)

God I love Emma Hunton. Like 3:34 is a masterclass of being present and taking what you receive from your partner.
You're right! Especially that Shanon was an understudy, so this was probably not something that Emma was used to.
What I find especially fascinating about Emma's performance is that she really brings out the 'weird girl' in Elphaba. Most Elphabas I've seen are very normal, save the green skin; but Emma's Elphaba is like this one weird girl from your middle school class who you're kind of reluctant to befriend because she's just... really weird. Not sure if I love it or hate it, but it's definitely fascinating!
I just love how I can tell Ryan Mccartan's Fiyero by his hair (and his voice bc I'm obsessed with the Heathers soundtrack...)

Elphaba is also sad but she is a little stronger in hiding the way she feels so she's the one comforting Glinda and in a way it could also be an apology. Elphaba knows what's to come, Glinda doesn't.

There's one moment from a recorded performance I saw (that stars Taye as Fiyero) from 2004 I think, where after Frex says, "Take it AWAY!", Elphaba's mother Melena (who's lying on the bed) holds her arms up as though she wants to hold baby Elphaba. A small detail but from a narrative perspective, it adds to the backstory for why Elphie keeps the little green bottle.

non of this was improvised or breaking character. its just different ways of saying the lines as written, sometimes if theres a longer laugh tha=n usual they have to pause longer
