  • I do a full teardown of a Traxxas TRX 3.3.
    The engine was running lean regardless of tune. It would quickly overheat. I go over the cause.

    Great information, thanks! Another option is Traxxas power up program. You basically trade in your worn/damaged engine (no matter the condition) for a new one at a discount. About a week ago I checked with my local hobby shop and I can get a new TRX 3.3 engine for $110. Your old engine has to be complete (minus the carb and either pull start or EZ start).

    That engine is still salvageable if you buy a new crankcase (Traxxas part # 5225) and engine bearings (Part # 5223). That's about $65 worth of parts, but still a lot cheaper than a complete engine. I have one in the shop with a similar situation, except on mine BOTH bearings were bad! When I removed the crank, the inner races fell out along with the balls and the outer races are now stuck inside the crankcase with no way to extract them unless there is a puller out there than can get behind those races to extract them.
    I did not have any tool like that and with no way to get behind the races with a punch or screwdriver to drive them out, I ordered a new crankcase & bearings and will install the other parts of the engine onto this new crankcase. The compression was great before disassembling so no need to replace the piston and sleeve and saw no metal shavings in the engine.
    Initially, this engine would only run for a few seconds and stall no matter how I set the HSN. When I did get the engine to run, I noticed that fuel was leaking out from behind the flywheel and slinging everywhere. I checked the side play like you did and the shaft had a TON of up and down slop.

    such a great engine. i've been bashing a slayer pro for over a decade and finally replaced the engine last year. and for the power it is pretty cheap

      I keep arguing amongst friends that if run with a high oil blend (12% or more) and keeping it bellow 260F it can last way over 4 gallons. Any idea on how much fuel you probably put through it?

    • @RCPMK
      @RCPMK Před 2 lety +1

      @@telecomandorc probably a few gallons but no idea. but the cylinder and piston are probably fine. it got very hard to tune and discovered the carb was cracked. new engine was $178 CDN right from local hobby shop so just replaced it. trying to think how old it was. I got it as a standard slayer when they first came out and later converted it to a pro with new chassis, a-arms, wheels, etc

      @@RCPMK Wow! That is a good deal. That is just over $140 USD. Most hobby shops will price them at $200 around here. I will check other states next time I am out on a road trip.

    I can’t believe yours lasted 2 gallons. Mine only lasted a half gallon. Two things right off with the trx. Replace the bearings and carburetor. Those two things will get you about 9 gallons. Fast Eddy bearings brother. $30 for traxxas bearings is theft. With fast Eddy bearings you will definitely get 9 to 10 gallons before replacing.

      I think you are right. These Traxxas bearing keep throwing the shields. Then the engine starts peaking because it gets way too lean.

    How would you get the .28 to fit though? Would it mount nicely?

    • @telecomandorc
      @telecomandorc  Před 2 lety

      It depends on the engine. But tou will need a new exhaust to fit. If you have a T-Maxx classic you will need the new engine mount for big block engines.

      @@xattiyuh5874 The trouble with the Revo and Slayer is the manifold. I do not recall if the O.S. manifold fits.

      @@xattiyuh5874 Look into getting TRA5360X. This will make it easier to install a big block.

      To clarify it will not fit. Trx 2.5/3.3's are small blocks. however you can convert your revo to big block.
