I think that was the general consensus among fans at the start. Kid was playing in a league you don't get a lot of exposure to, so it was a bit more difficult to gauge the type of player they got, while Zegras, Caufield, Cozens, etc. were still on the board. If his first season in Grand Rapids didn't dispel that doubt, he's been blowing every expectation you can think of out of the water in the SHL this season.
I'll say Seider was worthy to go sixth overall. Zetterberg should have gone first overall. But nobody knew of them. Wings could have picked Seider in the sixth round.

But scouts and draft "experts" usually say the young defenders are good offensively but lack defensive game... But Seider is very composed and calm and collected and is very good defensively... I love Cholowski too, but the reason he hasn't stuck in Detroit is his defensive game is not up to where it needs to be, his offense is great... Scored a goal his first NHL game, but he just needs to tighten up the defense

Yzerman found a diamond in the rough with this one and I LOVE it. I was shocked just like everyone in attendance but Stevie saw something in him no one else saw. Technically Raymond and Zegras are the top 2 (although Zegras is more of a social media marketing face for flashy goals, not saying he’s not a super talented player because he definitely is), but Mo is easily the Calder winner at this point in the season. He’s playing like a seasoned vet and is EASILY Detroit’s best Dman. He’s barely behind Zegras in points, which is a big deal with Mo being a blue liner. Even if Zegras wins it, keep in mind that as of now the likelihood of Edvinsson and Berggren playing next year is high. It’s easy to see both of them in the Calder top 3 at this time next year. Just 18 games into his NHL career and Seider is only 6 points behind Carlo's career high for points in a season. Seems like that comparison was off just a bit.
One thing the commentators failed to acknowledge is that Yzerman attempted to trade down and nothing was there for them....so, this was their guy and they didn't want to risk missing him with some crappy down-trade. Watched him at the prospects camp and the guy is a fluid skater...man, does he look comfortable. He's got a lot to learn - let's be realistic! Also, how many draft picks actually impact ANY team within their first few years? Very few....so again, let's be realist: he's probably a few years out...but I'm excited to see how he develops!

I remember being rather pissed when this pick was made because I was hoping for Trevor Zegras or Cole Caufield. Now he's completely dominating the SHL and might actually be the best defenseman in that entire league (top 3, at the very least), and he's not even 20 yet. I'm sure that Zegras and Caufield are going to have amazing careers, but having taken in at least 30 games of him over in Sweden, I now think this was an outstanding pick. Incredibly pumped for when he comes over from Sweden next season.
Caufield would have been nice, looking at his playoff run. With that being said though, Cole Caufield wouldn't hve been doing anything spectacular if he didn't have the defense around him that he has now in MTL. Sooooooo yeah we draft caufield then what? We need defense we got it. We got it this year, our back line is set, Mo seider, edvinsson, Cossa, Ned, Bau, smart move by Yzerman, why go for forwards in 2021, when you can wait until 2022, when the prospects are looking like actual studs, and draft a good forward then.

Great with the puck, processes and executes at a breathtaking pace, and imposes his will on opponents both physically and mentally. The plan is very apparent over these first few drafts. Turn the back end, including defense and goaltending, from a serious weak spot into a huge strength. And he's done that now. I think center is the next big question mark that they need to address. Hopefully they can add a Shane Wright in 2022 to solidify their future down the middle.

Its March 2022 and Moritz Seider is almost a point per game as a rookie D and he is literally a monster on the ice. This aged well.
