Yeah, I was expecting a totally different movie as a kid, because the scene of them driving under a bunch of trees with people hanging from them has the nooses omitted in the trailer. And because it looked like they all had their knees slightly bent (I remember this being the only reason I didn't immediately assume they were hanging by their necks), *I* immediately thought of the ghosts from _Silent Hill 4: The Room_ and thought he was going full _Sixth Sense_ again. I was entertained, nevertheless, because the movie *is* hilarious, but I *still* think about what could have been.

They are 'good horror' in theory, but when you think about it...Not so much.
Sure, something mind controlling large groups of people and making them commit suicide is a pretty scary concept. But how come the affected people are seemingly mindless, but still have enough conscience to be able to operate a gun? Or hang themselves...? That would make more sense if the force behind it was supernatural, or some kind of mind control technology; but not plants.

It's hilariously bad, but it's so long and poorly paced that it gets downright annoying, and god help you if you're drinking alcohol while watching it because the constantly reversing dutch angles will make you nauseous. Easily one of the most positive breakdowns of this movie. Despite Marky Mark's consignment to it being a terrible idea, the *concept* of Nature creating an antibody to humans as a sort of infection has some potential. You're right though, he needed to pick a tone. Either go full goofball/B-movie, or take it seriously. Shyamalan got too comfy with his "scary movie with humor" formula to nail this one.

It is basically that he gathers prominent actors in films that have basic yet interesting premises based on older fare.
Has a great below-the-line crew, somehow gets a budget for it and directs everyone from the cast and crew to attempt to imagine their very first film they ever got involved with.

Nah, the dude has some genuinely unique ideas at times, or at least goes with the execution to the end, like with Old, which while i didnt liked much, i appreciate that it went with its formula of aging at a rapid pace until your bones dry out. Its just that some times, his ideas are not freshed out, like in this case with The Happening, which its idea of plants out of nowhere spreading a virus that makes us kill ourselves sounds terrifying, but the execution made it seem silly, in part because Mark Whalberg was involved, and if this movie and Max Payne showed us something is that Mark Wahlberg cannot pull of a serious tone to his acting, he does better as the dickish but reasonable comic releif.

It's like when Evie Bot first came out vs. the insanity she became. M. Night used to have such creative ideas and movies, but it's been all down-hill since The Happening.
Sometimes I wonder if it was just Hollywood changing too much of his scripts and him having to adapt to what was considered trendy or what would make studio execs the most money. When he was relatively unknown, his movies were a breath of fresh air (no pun intended).

@@LordofSadFac It's an absolutely beliable concept, in the world of sci-fi. If the planet finally got sick of us humans, plants and plague would be the easiest way to get rid of large populations of people. I still think Covid-19 is the planet trying to shake off all the fleas that is humanity.
Like Ryan said, there are some chilling parts of that movie that forever stuck with me after watching. Even a last-luster protagonist isn't enough to fully tank a movie. But coupled with the execution of the "antagonist" it all was just laughable.
I think Birdbox took this concept of a invisable threat that could control the minds of others to a MUCH better end and might more frightening environment. We never get to the see the monster, but if it turned out to be a tree, I'd probably still be scared because the chaos and execution was MUCH higher stakes and had various interesting characters that pulled you in to care about them and their demise. But I think they did the smart thing and never let us see what the monsters were.

Roanoke did a breakdown of what the neurotoxin would do to people and the concept is actually terrifying, maybe moreso for me personally because self harm gets to me moreso than usual horror tropes. That being said no one can live down trying to outrun grass.

Happy Birthday, Ryan! I love the premise of the movie; "Nature sending out pheromones as an antibody to make its oppressor take care of itself." The execution is absolutely WASTED potential, though. Also wanted to mention there's historical context of actually nothing happening, but humanity sharing in a mass delusion, that could have been explored in this movie, as well.

Work is work man. Its genuinely rare for actors to be invited/allowed to have much influence over their characters, lines and deliveries. Like any other industry, depending on your boss the line for when you have to shut up and just do it now more questions to the boss or they start threatening your career

As much as I like your videos and the analasys they bring, you should do what feels right for you. No pressure, and if less videos come out over the year, that's fine too.

I can't help but wonder how much better this movie would have been if they just... never revealed that the plants were the bad guy. Keep the Happening as this horrifying unexplained phenomenon. You could even keep the 'wind in the grass' motif, but instead of it heralding the approach of the toxins it could emphasize the isolation and the inscrutability of the phenomenon. You could even have characters still running from the wind, because with nothing else to go off of they just assign their fear to literally anything observable.

The thing is, plants do release chemicals when harmed, and other plants of the same species can sense them and prepare ahead for the threat. It's called plant eavesdropping. A Contagion-style procedural about plants using volatile compounds to attack humans could be really cool. But you'd have to get a better director.

I always love the content Ryan! No matter what the subject, honestly. A deep dive on the validity of bad movies, the nuances and effectiveness of good movies, the pleas to Hollywood to stop faxing copies of old movies to our current timeline when all it does is muddy the content and artistic merit for a clear cash grab.
