Cheers from Seattle. Steely Dan is the genre. Fagen and Becker have consistently composed some of the finest music ever produced, timeless and enduring. Dive headfirst into their catalog. The song Black Cow always amazes new listeners.

Nice to see UK reactors. Great to see you both enjoying this one. Do more Dan. I'm a Brit myself. Both my kids have an encyclopaedic knowledge of this band, passed on by yours truly. They literally have no bad songs. They use top-notch musicians, fabulous arrangements and beyond superb engineering and production. You might consider going on with this album - it's brilliant.

I was 19 in 1973 working on a gas rig off Workington coast when I heard ‘Reelin in the Years’, Steely Dan’s first single. I have everything they ever did. Steely Dan, Wishbone Ash and John Martyn. God’s music.

Based on real character! Augustus Owsley Stanley III (January 19, 1935 - March 12, 2011) was an American-Australian audio engineer and clandestine chemist. He was a key figure in the San Francisco Bay Area hippie movement during the 1960s and played a pivotal role in the decade's counterculture. Under the professional name Bear, he was the sound engineer for the Grateful Dead, recording many of the band's live performances. Stanley also developed the Grateful Dead's Wall of Sound, one of the largest mobile sound reinforcement systems ever constructed. Stanley also helped Robert Thomas design the band's trademark skull logo.[1]
Called the Acid King by the media,[2][3] Stanley was the first known private individual to manufacture mass quantities of LSD.[4][5][6] By his own account, between 1965 and 1967, Stanley produced at least 500 grams of LSD, amounting to a little more than five million doses.[7] Source: Wikipedia

He was also a descendant of King Charlemagne of France hence "Kid Charlemagne". One of the versus "is there gas in the car, yes there's gas in the car". Owsley got caught and was arrested after his car ran out of gas and the police pulled over on the freeway. The album cover will make sense after you listen to the song "The Royal Scam".

Good comments...."Aja" (Along with The "Royal Scam")is also considered an iconic album and the musicianship is off the charts. Noted your sticks....Steve Gadd, one of the premier jazz drummers of the time and beyond, lays down some of the sweetest grooves you'll find in "popular" music. Another noteworthy mention is that Michael McDonald sings backup harmonies on many S.D. tunes...along with the angelic vocals from lady Dan (my descriptive) back up vocalists. S.D. is simply one of the most original and iconic bands of their era..keep going!

Steely Dan's sound is definitely a fusion of rock, jazz, blues, and anything else that held still long enough for them to grab it and use it.
Their lyrics often depicted some of the grittier aspects of life, from the rise, decline, and fall of a drug cooker ("Kid Charlemagne"), a melancholy tale of two former street denizens heading out for a last ride ("Midnight Cruiser"), or a younger man fantasizing about what he will do with his life ("Deacon Blues"), for just a small taste.

Mark said it the best, Steely Dan is the genre. There is a saying amongst Steely fans, Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band. Not many songs sound alike but when you get to know Dan you know who is doing it right away. They brought in tons of studio musicians for each song to get the perfect sound. Pick any song and it is amazing, but some classics are Do it Again, Peg, Josie, anything off of Aja (pronounced Asia)
This song was about Owsley "Bear" Stanley, who made the cleanest LSD back in the 60s. A good friend of The Grateful Dead, another band you should check out.
Also most songs have stories, even just look up the song on WIkipedia and you get some great insight. ENjoy your journey it is well worth it.
    Oh, and Great reaction.

Steely Dan is a pop music classic. Ths no finer music although there is a load of great classic pop out there. Much of it comes from UK. And what a nice father daughter hobby.

Album cover shows an individual sleeping on a bench depicted in a somewhat dreary setting which represents the impoverishing of immigrants coming from Caribbean islands who were promised a dream which turned out to be anything but a dream as they were enslaved and worked long hours in sweat shops, thus the "royal scam."

The album cover was going to be used by Elton John, and Steely thought it was the worst album cover they'd ever seen, so when Elton didn't use it, they did.
